Fun Gun Reviews Presents: "Marking Your AR Rifle for Non 5.56 Calibers". 5.56 /223 is by far the most popular AR-15 caliber, so when you have other calibers, it's a good practice to mark those rifles to avoid problems.

Great video and I need to do that to my mags for my 300 AAC Blackout. I have the same dust cover door you installed, BUT one big difference is that mine is labeled on both sides. So when the door is closed I can still see it is the 300 AAC Blackout. Now I still need to change the mag release like you did and I plan on doing that very soon! Again great videos, keep up the good work. God Bless America, Long Live the Republic!

You reminded me a little of Bob Ross when you were painting your happy mag, and you even gave him a couple little friends. I got the dust cover that says 300 BLK in big white font. For the mags I used a punctured mountain bike innertube, and cut 2in. sections to make a poor man's mag pull. Painted 300 on those, so I could remove them if I want to. I like that mag release button. Cool review.

This You Tube may be over 5 years old but it still provides the best ways to differentiate my AR's and mags based on caliber (300 BLK and 6.5 Grendel). I know which is which, but my kids may not remember. PS - Painting the mag's took little effort and only cost about $10 for the letters since I already had the spray paint. Looks great. Thanks!

Good info. I got rid of my .223 rifle, and only buy 5.56 rifles. I saw one of those .223's rifles with a stuck shell, from an inadvertent 5.56 round. For the Blackout rifle, I only use the green magpuls, to ensure positive ID, with the custom dust cover.

I have a number of 30 round magazines, metal and plastic, for both the AR and the Mini-14. I wrap the bottom couple of inches of the magazines with different color Duck Tape (Pink for the AR and Orange for the Mini-14) and mark them as mine with a Sharpie marker. Paint looks like a great option as well.

My two, 5.56 and .300Blk, are easy to distinguish. The 5.56 has a free floated hand guard with an 18" barrel, and the .300 has a Magpul MOE hand guard with a 16" barrel. Both use Magpul STR stocks, the 5.56 in black, the .300 in gray. The scopes are very different too, although from the same manufacturer, Nikon. And I use 30rd mags for the 5.56, but 20rd mags for the .300.

Overall good information and video. Not to be too critical but perhaps not use only "caliber" when refering to different cartridges. I.e. 300 Blk(7.62x35N vs. 7.62x 39Nato. Both are .30 caliber, yet completely different cartridges. I know you know the difference, yet less informed may be confused. Enjoyed it though

6.8 according to Travis Haley has a little more pop and recoil than the 7.62x39.. they both have same power at the muzzle...but at 500 yds the 6.8 has double the power....flies more efficiently and flat...

With one of your four most common chamberings for AR-15s being 7.62x39, I was kinda curious what you know about that type of gun. I'm pretty interested in getting an AR-15, but I really like the 7.62x39 round. Any suggestions for quality AR-15 builds that are chambered for it? Thanks if you find time to answer, Sootch.
@sootch00
@sootch00 9 жыл бұрын
I looked pretty hard at 7.62x39 for an AR but the biggest issue is excessive wear on the bolt. The sloping shoulders and larger diameter of the case drive up pressure and Bolts are more likely to break. Plus, using standard AR mags shorten the round count to 10-15 since there is no curvature to the mag body like AK mags. There are aftermarket fixes to most of these issues but they are more expensive. I'd recommend sticking with the AK/SKS for that 7.62x39 round.
@lv2943
@lv2943 9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks, Sootch. Yeah, I was having trouble finding AR-15s that seemed reliable and quality built in 7.62 and your information about the technical issues just reinforces that it's not totally reasonable. Oh well, SKS it is.
@JCtheGeek2187
@JCtheGeek2187 9 жыл бұрын
There is always the Rock River Arms LAR-47...which has actually finally made it into production. It is specifically designed to use AK mags. Not sure if they addressed the bolt wear issue or not. I think they look interesting at the very least...almost like an AR and AK had a love child. :-)

sootch00 may I comment here? Try using a 6.5 grendel bolt face for 7.62x39. The thickness of the base diameter is .055 for both rounds. The base diameter is .004 difference. Now I wouldn't use a 7.62 bolt face on a 6.5 grendel, but it will work visa versa because the operating pressure of the grendel is 8k psi more. So it will handle the pressure of the 7.62 round. And it won't break down as quickly with the grendel bolt. Or you may try a different metal 7.62 bolt face. Maybe something made of super hard tool steel. M2 tool steel can really take a beating once it is hardened and annealed. Just my two cents

John, Any Mil-Spec Lower can be used with 7.62x39, 6.8 SCP, 6.5 Grendel, 300 AAC Blk, .50 Beowulf ,9mm, 22 LR, 5.56/223 and others. The biggest difference is in the Upper Receiver on these calibers. The AR-15 lower will not work with 308/7.62x51. Thanks and good luck~ Don

Some people will use multiple uppers with the same lower, just swap them out while at the range. Or shooting with a friend that doesn't know the firearm as well as you do. It is a big deal if you chamber and fire the wrong caliber. Better safe than sorry.

Most of your AR-15's are chambered in 5.56 and you can fire both 5.56 and 223 in that Chamber. Older commercial barrels may be in .223 and it's not recommended to shoot 5.56 in those, but many do with no issues.
