Last month my mom got me an alto recorder and a while back she sent me the metronome that sat on the piano as a kid. Your videos have been very encouraging and helped me loose the stigma that recorders are for kids. I'm 50 hehehe. Love from Montana.❤

Not nerdy. You hit it on point, this. It's about wanting to improve proficiency. I still practice with a metronome for many things, even when practicing Hanon on the piano, especially. You learn when to flex the cadence and tempo with a group or even solo when you play. Look at Jazz. You can follow each other, but the metronome can help you get that even start, whatever the final tempo becomes. Excellent video!!!

One little suggestion: If you're looking at your music, and listening to the metronome, great; however, if you read ahead, or have memorized your piece, try setting the metronome to flash (or pay more attention to it swinging if you have an ST, like I did). Just for fun. Why? It'll help you get used to visual cueing on the beat, and prepare you for unspoken glances by fellow players in a group, or even start to ready you for watching the baton. This way you can bend as a group to each other's feel, or at least proceed together in concert in consort with a conductor pulling the tempo around, and be a part of a wonderful new interpretation of the cadence of your performance piece. Beside, it's fun.

Thank you for all the ideas. Metronomes are a great tool - don't care if it makes me a nerd. I have a free app called Rhythmic Metronome and it lets me input the actual rhythm. This helps me with some of the more complicated rhythms until I'm more comfortable with its.

Good advices!!! I feel that for me is effective if I don't measure the downbeats, but rather the sub divisions, whilst feeling the pulse mentally. It kind of varies with different music, but I kind of discover that I am more aware of what sections need "cleaning" as I get the music up to speed. Is all about getting the music to a point of control and then figuring out what you want to do with musical nuances.

Hello again. I enjoy your videos very much, they are fun to watch. Thanks! Should I buy a Dream Recorder in Tenor?.. I am thinking of stopping playing the clarinet mainly because of the pressure on my teeth.. I just turned 60. My soprano and alto recorders have always been lying open in my shelf since decades and from time to time I had fun with them... no pressure. I recently watched your introduction to the tenor and I remembered that I had one stowed away somewhere. I found it and it sounds very nice... a Mollenhauer Denner I think. It is more than 45 years old and I hardly ever played on it. But the low tones!! Where are they?... Hardly to be heard. I want to play loud. :-) Would a Dream Recorder be a solution? Thank you!

I don't think I could get used to anything except my old Franz electrical metronome that has a mechanical click, I tried a digital one and it just didn't work me for some reason. I bought it when I dropped my old mechanical one and it didn't work anymore. A tragic day in my student years.

Maybe it's because I had a mechnical exclusively for years, but I find the function of electronic metronomes where they play one beat differently than the other ones really annoying - if I use one nowadays, I put it to a 1/4 time signature to get the uniform beat I want...

Rhythm is not really dry... it's horrendously difficult, for me. It's stumped any hope I could have of making a career out of music. I got better over time, but I still feel I am improvising instead of tapping. I should probably find myself a teacher and try that way.
