The start of the 11pm "Action News" on CBS affiliate WBNG-TV (channel 12) in Binghamton, NY. WBNG's newscasts were called "Action News" for a long time, now they are just called "12 News."
Candace Chapman anchors the news, Alyssa Van Wie briefly appears to do a report before getting cut off, and Glenn Burns (who retired from WSB in Atlanta last year) does the Mega Millions drawing. Alyssa Van Wie headed out east on I-88 the next year to work at WTEN, as the inaugural anchor for their weekend morning news show.
The top story is on the Binghamton Senators hockey team drawing attendance. Today Binghamton has a hockey team named the Black Bears; before that they were the home of the Binghamton Devils who previously played in Albany as the Albany Devils. The Devils moved to Utica in 2021 and became the next iteration of the Utica Comets.
WBNG would be purchased by Granite Broadcasting (one of the worst TV owners ever, though they were OK in Binghamton) and later Quincy Media, which was absorbed into Gray Television in 2021. On December 13, 2023, WBNG launched Gray's standardized graphics package which is a job by ex-Hothaus employee Matt Quinn, and it looks good for a market Binghamton's size.
