“The Uncle Al Show” was a weekday staple from 1950 to 1985 on WCPO 9. Al Lewis and his wife Wanda produced original songs, skits, and art to engage, entertain and educate. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Cincinnati’s children were part of the live-audience and many were participants in the show’s skits. It was one of the longest running local children’s shows in American broadcast history. Uncle Al’s accordion and hat remain iconic decades later.

Oh my goodness, my sister and I loved this show so much. Living in the Dayton Ohio area all my life, the Cincinnati stations were very easy to get. I remember the dance they did. I showed it to my niece when she was 4 and she laughed hysterically. My mom watched all the Nati shows, Ruth Lyons, Bob Braun, etc. Paul Dixon was her very favorite and cried when they took it off. Literally sobbed. I also remember the ending song, It's a Small, Small World. ( I'm singing it in my head)

I watched this with my mom after she told me she was on this show as a child. This was fascinating and it was nice seeing my mom get pleasantly nostalgic.

Being a kid in the Cincinnati broadcast area was a magical time, especially with Uncle Al. My mother, my brother, my neighbors and I were on the show when we children were quite young. I remember spending the entire show trying to get Uncle Al's attention, then disappointed that I never did get his attention, and at the end of the show, for the group photo, Wanda did her level best to soothe my disappointment by picking me up and telling me what a handsome boy I was. So, for the group picture, I was held by Captain Windy.

My mom and aunt took me, my sister, and cousins to that show when we were little...I was backward and shy...it freaked me out and I cried!!!!!! Being on stage was different than watching it on TV and I just didn't get it at all...probably embarrassed my mom. I am looking to see if I can find myself with my pretty dress and ribbon in my hair........

What a wonderful documentary. Thank you. I cried, it brought back such great memories. I vividly remember the special effects shots. Even as a little kid, I realized what they were doing with the background and green screen , but I still loved it. Mostly I remember when he would go into the big cave, and talk to the giant, but you could just see his feet. 37:48 And I remember a hot air balloon , 35:26 where one kid just walked out of the basket, off into the sky. I thought that was so funny. The mistakes and things going wrong were part of what made it interesting to watch. Having the kids on was a stroke of genius, because it made everyone want to tune in and see if their friends were on. Uncle Al is so ingrained in my mind, that when I hear UNCLE…. I think …AL! But if I hear just AL… I think Schavelkote. Or Bob…Braun. Or Nick…Clooney.

One of the most egotistical, rude, and demanding people I’ve ever met. Treated people who waited on him as though they were his personal servants.

"AL" hated kids, and during commercial breaks, he would visit the dumpster outside the building to get his "SHOT OF INSPIRATION" one time he went outside and the door went closed and he could not get back in( no keys). I remember watching one episode when after a commercial break "captain wendy" made the comment on the air about "where is uncle al", so she went on with out him. I found out in later years, what he was doing. what a lush!!!!!!.
