The quality of this (sound + video) recording confirms what I've been thinking for decades : technicians actually are artists doing their craft with machines. For a such a band, it takes a huge talent to make the final piece sound and look soooooo damn perfect !

In 1982 Spyro Gyra was the guest band at the renowned Elmhurst Jazz Festival and as band soloists in the competition we had the chance to jam with them the morning before the competition. What an amazing experience as an 18 yr old trumpet player. We had the competition during the day and they performed the concert at night at the beautiful Scottish Rite Auditorium. Before their performance they announced the competition awards and fortunately I won the trumpet soloist award. What a life highlight that I will never forget. Thank you SG for so many years of amazing music!

My father took me to see them as a kid, I wanna say in the late 70’s or early 80’s. At the time I wanted to go play football in the street outside. Over the years I never forgot that name Spyro Gyra. So when we started digging in my pops crates for samples I knew that name would have sample gems for days. I bought a bass and use to play along. I love the many moods the songs took you thru. In my head their songs reminded me of being outside in different times of the day. And at different places. My pops was a musician/ composer/ director, so I was exposed to many different types of music. I’m a WESTCOAST B-boy from the Chi. Seen a lot of the legends over the years. But till remember many of these songs at 52 yrs old.

Jay Beckenstein is the PERFECT Smooth Jazz sax player - never overplays, always plays exactly what's needed and nothing more. Never self-indulgent. His ego never seems to enter his playing. Pure and smooth. Such a sensible and correct musician. Same with Tom Schuman. Plays exactly what's needed, and nothing more. Mature players.

Almost 5 decades since they started out. I've been following them '77-78 when my brother came home with their first record. Seen them a handful of times over the years. Tom joined the band in' 77. They have consistently put out fresh compositions and had top quality musicians. They still have fun together. It's refreshing.

I was about 15 when I accidentally bought a used copy of Catching the Sun in 1982. I had never heard anything like it in my small town. That was my first exposure to jazz and it didn't click with my friends who worshipped Van Halen and ZZ Top. But I fell in love with jazz and have been a fan ever since, thanks to that accidental album purchase. They sound even better now than back then.

What a group, what a sound, what talent, what skill = A MUSICAL EXPERIECE. The sound of the solid body 6 string is a beautiful cross between the hollow body electric jazz and the smooth lead of a compressed and overdriven preamp. And that beautiful horn, the sax fills the room like a brass band (with help of keyboards) or solo with all expression anyone can hope to drive out the instrument. Percussion and bass driving it all or in perfect accompany with lead, fills that are perfect in just the right amount of complexity to enhance the group and not close them out. he gives air to the double kick (one or two pedals?) bass drum and every part of the kit has its own space. Fingered E bass, with timing slides and tone that enhance and move us, literally! This bass player is full of complex articulations and speed to excite us. The bass sounds fretless at times, he has found two guitars in one. Keys, wow, subtlety soloing with the strength needed to come out and play, but filling the group with warmth and background textures of perfection. And this is just the recording, as balanced and detailed as it is, cannot hope to capture the gentle articulations we are missing from the skill of these instrumentalists. It all takes me back and forward to today, back to the days of my teens in the 70s as a musician and audiophile, collecting the vinyl of Weather Report, Bob James, The Crusaders, Herbie, Chuck and Doc, and many more. And now today, just as good as 50 years ago, timeless music so pleasing to the ear and engaging to the mind, flowing into the heart and soul. And today with Spyro Gyra taking me on the journey with them to a wonderful heavenly place of music. The good and bad of KZfaq as I sort through the new and old music on here, so rare to hear what Spryo Gyra is doing today with talent, skill, orchestration, arrangement, composition all as one. This KZfaq contribution is the top of my day, week, year for finding music on KZfaq.

Jazz speaks to the low and high emotions in its movement and its narrative gives space to each part of the story teller and to the harmony of the whole. I love these Guys for their endurance. Experts at Four Play Act
