To spice up the classroom a bit, we decided to have a muralist come in and turn it into a slice of the jungle! Tony with Walls of Art, LLC did an amazing job on this mural. He's not a sponsor or anything, we just really want to thank him because he was a pleasure to work with! So, check out his Facebook page here:

One of the first games parents do with their babies is touching their noses, and babies learn to reciprocate by the time they're a year old. Cat owners also can't seem to resist stroking their cats noses, and lots of snake owners also talk about booping the snoot. So I'd guess that touching painted animals' noses is a way of showing affection to the pictured animal and also creating a connection with them. I don't know, of course-- my child development courses never addressed the widespread appeal of nose booping. ;-D

Emily, do you think maybe the wall should be painted with a varnish or something to protect against thousands of little kids coming and poking the nose? (as well as small things like bumps or scuffs.) The mural is so beautiful, I don't want to see it tarnished before I have a chance to visit! It could also make the wall easier to clean!

“Who knows why kids touch the animals’ nose” … you’re telling me you don’t boop your pets on the nose? I am a pedatric nurse that works specifically with medically fragile and developmentally delayed children. I'm not a child behavior / developmental specialist, but I've still seen a lot, learned a lot, and gotten to pick the brain of various pedatric doctors and specialist (including developmental specalists). Not to mention, I just throughly enjoy the topic and learning how the little ones think and learn and grow. And so, regarding the touching of the animals' noses, It's pretty common for those with small children to do the thing of "where's your nose!?" "Where's your eyes!?" etc. The nose is an easier one to do and point out, especially in public (think, children poking their eye and then getting mad, or putting their fingers/hand in their mouth when pointing that part out, then you need to sanitize them, did they get stuff in their mouth that shouldn't be in their mouth by doing that, etc etc etc). That is a common game parents / care givers will play with children (in perticular smaller ones) to keep them busy when waiting on something so that they don't get into trouble or get real fussy. Many kids might have a dog or cat (animals with elongated faces) with whom they might play a similar game of "look mom/caregiver! Nose!" and pointing out the dog nose, or pointing out the cat's belly, etc. Children get verbal praise for this fun little learning game and (can be) quite proud of their new knowledge! (And the positive attention around the knowledge). One of my favourite possibilities is the fact that our noses stick out of our face, and boy to babies/small children love to grab them. They might be trying to touch it to see if it also sticks out, does it has a different texture, can they grab it, etc! But maybe most of all, humans in general are curious creatures and the littler ones of us are no exception! Just wanting to touch and explore the world, pointing out objects and new things ❤❤

I think the mural is not only a great piece of art but also a great management tool for events! If you need to get children's attention, you can ask them to point at a specific thing or part of the mural (Can sound like: "If you're ready to begin point to the snake discovery sign to show me you're ready) Another possibility is to get kids ready is to have them imitate something on the mural (Can sound like: Can I have my friends who are ready pick a pose from the mural?) and the fun thing to do is have children guess each other's pose or even doing a game where they can try to group the similar poses together! Poses also don't have to be limited to the animals, but they can even imitate the water. If you're waiting for a couple of more guests, you can play I spy as an icebreaker during that time. Just thinking aloud as a primary teacher! :))) Wishing you guys all the best in the facility and especially that classroom!! xx

That is just beautiful. I love murals. And yes I am an artist... watercolor, photography and jewelry making. So I could really appreciate this video. Love to see someone at work. And acrylic is a medium I like to. My biggest painting was 3m to 4m and it was a struggle. As you have handmemory. I had to make my trees big and I struggled. To do a mural... wauw... congratulations to snake discovery for the upgrading of the wall and congratulations to Tony for his work. It is beautiful. And it certainly is the style of the zoo too... that rimes... greetings from Belgium, love you guys...

Crazy talented, Tony. Super dope. I would also guess young kids do that because they've had adults boop their noses when they're learning body parts. Tons of children's books that point out body parts of animals. They also probably do it to the animals in the zoo when they're close enough to the glass.

You know, one of the things that would be awesome for another wall would be a world map where you can mark where all of the animals in the zoo come from regionally.

I love this channel, and I swear to God I've learned SO much more. I never had an interest in snakes, but after watching your channel, I LOVE THEM! I would really like to visit the zoo sometime, but I live do far away- And my country is free of wild snakes. I think their is only one type of wild reptile there, it's really sad... Anyways, keep up the good work!
