You'll be fine!! BG3 is so beginner-friendly. I know many people who had never played until this game! My pro tip -- have fun respec-ing your characters into different subclasses once you get them (they do nooot all come with great defaults haha.. *cough* shadowheart) -- she starts as a "trickster domain" cleric, I personally would recommend "life domain" more healing spells and she can wear heavy armor. Different subclasses have different play styles in combat, you might find something you like better :) and you get to optimize their stats at respec if you want. Above all else, have fun. Don't stress messing up or dying. It's part of the experience. That IS DnD!

You'll be fine, don't worry about asking for tips. It's not a hard RPG(unless you play tactician) compared to something like Pathfinder. So you don't need any special insights, just explore in detail, experience the story and have fun. My one advice would probably be to either not bother with multiclassing or ask for a detailed spoiler-free guide for it so that you won't gimp your character. It's not needed for a story playthrough, I even forgot such an option exists, but maybe you would be in the mood to try it in the future. The same with the lore, the game is pretty good about introducing a new player into what's happening, though you'll be confused at first obviously. My point is, there'll be a LOT of backseat gaming, just expect that. DnD is a very old thing and there are plenty of people who know the lore inside and out and also can break the system in a thousand different ways and some of them will probably be offended if you experience the game in the "not intended" way. So just do your thing. We love blind let's plays for being "blind". Another advice is, I imagine it's quite obvious and you've played RPGs already, but don't try to build an all-rounder character who tries to succeed in all dialogue checks or something like that. You have your class, you have your strengths and weaknesses. When the spell says "disadvantage: target too close" it means that the odds to hit with this spell are at a disadvantage because the target is too close. Don't forget to quicksave often. Due to the nature of being an RPG, sometimes you might accidentally trigger events not in the way you'd like to and I'm not talking about "saying the wrong stuff during a dialogue", I'm talking more about stuff like "AOE accidentally caught a friendly NPC and now they're forever angry" or just some kind of bug. Autosaves might be too far and you'll have to replay a lot in that case.

This game takes a bit of getting used to due to the amount of freedom it gives you in solving problems. Unshackle your mind from the "This is a video game" mindset and you'll find that the game is very permissive, and there's a lot of fun to be had. The first time you solve a problem using tools you didn't think could be used because "surely this won't work" will be the greatest lightbulb moment you'll experience. Quick examples - Spells don't only have to be cast in combat, The environment and objects in it can be manipulated quite a bit, if you think it makes sense based on an item, spell, or skill's description it will probably work out that way.

Helpful tip 😃 The reason you kept missing that imp is because you were aiming your attacks below his feet. BG3 is very specific about where you're aiming: you can aim under, over, or between things to hit your target. But this also means you have to specifically click on your target, physically, not in their little selection circle.
@mduckernz
@mduckernz Ай бұрын
Alternatively, you can just click on their portrait in the turn order! That way, if a valid path to hitting the target with the selected action exists, it will take it, and never miss due to mis-targeting (of course, it may still miss, but that’s just random chance, not user error, then)

One note to add, Welonz: (love your playthroughs, btw) the reason why that imp on the ship took so many attacks to kill is because for a lot of your attacks you weren't actually targeting the imp, but the floor/walls near it. That's why they weren't showing damage or misses. You were essentially attacking the air. :)

Some tips for this episode: There's a button near the bottom right corner that opens up a combat log, which can be pretty useful to keep track of what's going on, and what rolls are being made. When you have multiple party members having consecutive turns (adjacent portraits in the turn order tracker at the top of the screen) you can freely switch between them to take their turns, or parts of their turns, in any order you want. You missed some of you attacks because you misclicked and didn't select the enemy properly. Make sure the enemy is highlighted and the hit chance appears to make sure you aren't just wasting attacks. Firebolt has disadvantage because it is a ranged attack, and ranged attacks have disadvantage when you make them while in melee range of an enemy. Usually when an effect is applied to a creature (like when you used Topple) the creature makes a roll to attempt to resist the effect. "Saved" appearing means that the creature successfully rolled to avoid the effect. Something often recommended is to disable Karmic Dice in the settings. Karmic Dice can weight dice roll results (typically to avoid streaks of failures), while disabling it leaves the dice rolls unweighted. Ultimately it's up to you if you want it on or off.
@EricGrassi

Came into the comments to say a few of these. Another tip, examine enemies to make sure they're not resistant to attacks you're using.

Combat log and properly taking the time to read features and effects is the fastest way to a thorough understanding of the game. I would compare it to MTG in a sense. Yes, things are complex with different systems and modifiers interacting, but everything is explained. Things generally do what they say, so if you piece together the puzzle, you can use it to your advantage. (Pun partially intended)

D&D comes down to knowing what is your character's strengths and weaknesses and playing around them. High charisma classes will have bonuses on things associated to charisma such as intimidation, persuasion, etc. All attributes have skill associated with them and you should try to use those skills in most situations. The cool thing about D&D is that your character will never be good at everything like your usual MC in a game. Just try to imagine the character you would like to play in this universe and even though you don't know many things about the universe, you''ll soon understand them through experience and associations, and also intuition of course. From one great game to another, just have fun and don't focus too much on optimizing your character so much, this is the cool thing about D&D and specially baldurs gate rewards you with unusual situations that are intended to exist even if you fail sometimes. They make up for a very different story just for you! Have fun Welonz! This game is absolutely GOATED.

Larian simplified and somewhat departed from the actual religious lore of the setting when they made it "Lloth" Drow vs. "Seldarine" Drow, but it works as an "Evil Drow" vs. "Non-Evil Drow" distinction for the game. Expect a lot of prejudice because canonically 85-90% of Drow adhere to the dominant evil culture, with the ones who reject that culture generally being outcasts. They used to be almost non-existent, but "Brooding Loner Who Looks Evil And Dark But Is Good Actually But Misunderstood Because Of His Dark Edginess" is extremely popular, so the number of outcast and non-evil Drow exploded in the years after Drizzt Do'Urden (the poster child for "Non-Evil Drow Adventurer") novels popularized the archetype. The dominant Drow culture is matriarchal, pro-slavery, and dominated by noble houses that are perpetually engaged in an ever shifting web (GET IT) of alliances and betrayals and conspiracies and double and triple dealing and backstabbing and assassination and so on.

When you take partial rest your skill slots etc. don’t get replenish since you didn’t consume any food, but camp-only scenes happen. As a side note, I did a playthrough as Open Hand Monk, is extremely powerful with the Tavern Brawler feat. Went through the game unarmed and no armor, keeping enemies stunned and prone. I had a great time 😄 Some combat tips: When exploring, try approaching from stealth. Seek the high ground. Wet enemies take double damage from cold and electric attacks. A thrown water bottle or a Create Water spell will make an enemy wet for 3 turns, making them vulnerable to arrows and spells of cold & electricity. Quality of life tips: Send all camp supplies to camp Use the “pick up as wares” option for everything you don’t plan on keeping, can sell all wares in one transaction when you get to a vendor. If everyone fails a perception check for buried item, can still use shovel to dig in the area, uncovering buried chest.

Quick non spoilery thing about monks: while in the pen n paper tabletop monks are currently considered one of the weaker classes, in bg3 its one of the stronger ones. This is due to the game adding a lot of items. In general dnd progression is very item heavy. For the monk you want to seek out and hoard any items that interact with "unarmed attacks"/"unarmed strike". the keyword here is important for items as well as building your character.

Some rolls are Passive, things that happen naturally like, you Percieving things is very common, sometimes the game will automatically roll dices for the Investigation (traps or other mysteries), Survival (for nature related observations) and others still. These are ability checks, because they use your ability scores as modifiers! If you are offered with an ability check in a dialogue option though, be sure to hover over the [BRACKETS] with the name of the ability check being done, this will show what modifiers you have for it, this is where the "ability proficiency" comes in, basically some 4 abilities you have very good knowledge of, so you get a bonus that grows as you level up. Everything a character is good in gets the proficiency bonus, so a melee characters adds it to their attacks and damage, and spellcasters add it to rolls relating to their casting.

Wonderful to see you heading into BG3, I played it without having any knowledge of the previous games at all, so there were some things I didn't connect on why they where relevant. But it does not impede the BG3 storyline. Here's a few things I noticed you were trying to wrap your head around. When you make an attack, you get to make an unarmed attack as a bonus action (other classes does not get this). You also always have the more powerful option to use "Flurry of Blows" (which is also a bonus action), but it will as you saw cost you "Ki Points". Ki Points are regained through rests (both short and long, the "rest stations" on the Nautiloid was a tutorial aid for recovering resources). The unarmed attack that unlocks when you make an attack. It is the icon that appears on the right side in your action bar after making an attack (46:45). Yes, you have an Action (represented by a Green Circle), a Bonus Action (Orange Triangle), Spell Slots for spellcasters only (Blue Squares), and a distans in Meters that you can move each turn. Hovering over the blue circle/bar shows you how many meters of movement you have left. The pathing turns red either when it indicates moving through a hazard (1:01:57) or when you're out of movement (38:18). Classes also have unique resources; Monk has Ki Points. All actions you can take shows which resource it consumes (1:04:05), here it says it costs a Bonus Action and a 1st level spell slot Cantrip. It is a spell that can be used without expending a spell slot. All other spells requires the spending of a corresponding (or higher spell slot). A 2nd Level spell can only be cast using a 2nd level (or higher) spell slot. Shadowheart is a Cleric and that is a spellcaster. On her resource bar you can see Blueish Squares. They are the spell slots (1:04:09) you can see that one of the Blue squares lost its light, this means that spell slot has been used. You must perform a long rest to regain them. Spellcaster are generally more restricted in lower levels due to how few spell slots they have at the start. You can right click on enemies and examine them. This will allow you to see what they are resistant/vulnerable/immune to, as well as read their passive effects that could for example say that they can't be knocked prone. Zhalk (the red demon fighting the mindflayer in the battle in the helm) for example is level 8, and is resistant to slashing/piercing/bludgeoning (which are the damage weapons do), making him really hard to hurt for the player at this stage. I tried to be concise and not complicate it.

just a quick thing, dark urge is a bit of a weird thing, it is a character option yes but... it's not actually forced upon the player to play a selected race, class and with preselected stats, dark urge only demands you pick a specific background "haunted one". I don't wanna spoil too much but playthrough with dark urge is less playing a pre-set character and more of playing with a quite of bit additional content... and additional chances to fuck up royally. Dark urge is also *not* gonna be someone you will meet along the way, they are not a possible companion.

Just a quick tip. In this game you have to make sure you're highlighting the enemy when you attack, otherwise you hit the environment around them (in this case the ground).

Concerning movement, there is a WASD mod with auto-movement and a camera mod over at Nexus. I would recommend that. The game plays much more like Dragon Age that way.

Yes! Monk is a great class :) Also you really don't need to move the camera to follow your character. Just click and HOLD the left mouse button on the ground and the character will move with camera in the direction. But you must hold the mouse button down. Don't just click. If you want to cancel a command, just right click on the screen or hit Esc

"wasd character movement" and "Native Camera Tweaks" this will give you more of a third person up close camera. Of course you can always zoom out or change it back to normal with a click of a button.

I actually love that you're a newby to BG3 and DND at large, so was I when I first played BG3 and I still loved it. You have a great eye for detail and you're gonna have plenty of time on this journey to learn the lore and this world. But I've got to say as others have despite this being the 3rd game and being a part of the larger DND universe it's extremely approachable for new comers I was all in after the first hour because of the characters and larger fantasy elements at play and it only kept getting deeper and deeper. Hope you have a great time Welonz!😆 As a side note I'm also looking even more forward to your Dragon Age Veilguard LP now because barring any delays you'll definitely be playing both at the same time for a good bit. Predictably people have started comparing the two and it's pretty annoying for the most part but I am looking forward to your opinion when ever both LPs are done.👍

Woohoo! This is going to be great! Time to spam Welonz with that D&D 5th Edition Knowledge (spoiler-free, naturally!) 09:02 - D&D (and other Tabletop RPGs) in a nutshell! 19:10 - No, but there is a mod you can install that enables it. 29:00 - In D&D one turn is 6 seconds of real time 52:15 - Useful Tip: Items with orange border are story-related, always good to keep an eye on them. 1:00:10 - Monk ability gives you a chance to make another Unarmed Strike as a bonus action. Since you are in real time, and not in combat, it will be available only for 6 seconds. 1:05:11 - You walked through fire on your previous turn. The movement line goes red when you have no more movement or you enter hazardous/difficult terrain. 1:08:37 - For several attacks you were not aiming properly :D When you're being displayed percentage of success you know you've correctly targetted. 1:12:06 - Cambions are an offpring of Devils (type of fiends, native to the Nine Hells) and humanoids 1:14:10 - "Saved" means that it succeeded against your attempt to knock it prone. One type of rolls in D&D are "saving throws" to resist some sort of effect/damage such as paralysis, mind control, etc. Overall, a solid first episode! Can't wait to see more :D

an exciting start! that opening cinematic cutscene is just so incredibly well done. monk + plus seldarine drow, - what a unique avatar choice for a first time player! I'm very excited about that. to echo a previous comment that I saw, pacing yourself on this game can be a very good thing. seems like you are already aware of how long and how dense this game is. I might recommend treating this game as a trilogy, each act being its own game. you could play through Act 1, take a break for a few weeks or a month, then start Act 2, etc. I don't know if you will want to, but approaching it like that really helped me. I love this game but too much of a good thing... so on and so forth. I wasn't new to DnD when I started this game, but it still took me a long time to fully understand the gameplay loop. please be patient with yourself as you learn. don't let anyone make you feel dumb for making mistakes. my gentle recommendations are to stay curious, read things carefully, don't be afraid to go slowly, talk to people, and do as you please! this is a game of choices and consequences. there are soooo many branching paths for how this story can unfold. lastly, WOOHOOO! this is going to be so much fun!

I will say, normally I'd reccomend just commiting to your rolls and experiencing the story as it happens but that is assuming multiple play throughs. Assuming you intend to just do 1 playthrough where you see as much as possible then save scumming may be the best bet to see as much as possible in 1 playthrough. Remember in the witcher 2 how if you sided with roche or iorveth you basically had 2 different games in act 2. Well imagine that but there are multiple decisions with that level of impact. My recommendation for a single playthrough, decide early what kind of character you want and if a decision you make takes you way off that path reload. And also there's an element of randomness whether you end up going with Roche or iorveth based on a dice roll lol. Really awesome if you want a new experience everytime you play the game but possibly frustrating if you're trying to go for something specific.

Some tips that might help: - During battle make sure to check an enemy for their conditions/weaknesses as some resist certain damage types or have special conditions and it's easier to plan what to do that way - Take special note of the environment, wet things are vulnerable to ice and lightning, grease can make you slip or you can set it on fire, mud slows you down etc. You can also take advantage of it by throwing things in your environment or inventory like throwing a bottle of water at someone etc. - There are contingencies upon contingencies so there are multiple ways to complete anything or fail it. This adds to replay value but also makes everything super unique with sometimes special dialogue from characters - You can separate your party or interact with characters as different members of your party. The first is good if you need stealth. The second is good if you think you need better prices at a merchant or want to intimidate someone, or if there's a special check you want someone else to try - If you have musical proficiency you can gather people to you as you play which could be helpful for luring away guards or gathering potential enemies Overall just experiment a lot and have fun, save scum if you need to but enjoy a very fun very long game

Hey Welonz! So stoked to see you play this! I don't usually recommend mods right off the bat, but upon hearing you wrangle with the camera and the controls I was taken back to my first experience with the game and how I also had my fights with those. There's 2 mods on the Nexus, WASD Character Movement by Ch4nKyy and Native Camera Tweaks by Ershin, that made my gameplay experience so much more smooth and comfortable, and I don't feel like they take anything away from the intended experience at all. You'll still have to click to interact with things, including ladders, and using WASD on climbable terrain is a little hit or miss, but that's the only real caveat. Something to consider if you keep struggling with it! Very excited to where this journey takes you!

Nice monk i will tell you that one big feature of the monk is they get a unarmed strike as a bonus action on top of using your action for attacking so long as you are unarmed or use a monk weapon. The abilites can be very specific for example your level 2 got you unarmored movement which gives you movement if you don't wear protective gear. If you wear armor or use a shield alot of the monk abilities shut off. Gotta monitor those Ki points because it fuels the monk abilites like flurry of blows, Patient Defence, step of the wind. Be aware that class and subclass you choose has a huge impact on playstyle. Yes theres plenty of missable things. Don't worry about choosing the same class as an ally if you want to do that it's totally valid and subclasses can make a large difference.

Looking forward to the journey! It's fun to see you navigate the systems like a newborn deer. Baldurs Gate 3 is definitely a good place to start if you're unfamiliar with DnD, it was designed for people exactly like you with little to no experience with tabletop RPG's. It takes the already beginner friendly, simplified rules from DnD's 5th edition and makes them even more simple.
@nickrubin7312
@nickrubin7312 Ай бұрын
Exactly this! It could appear overwhemling, but if you read what things do (read a lot, actually, there is no PhB for this), the game is very good entry point for DnD newbie. I wouldn't say it simplfies 5e, but it is certainly a homebrew that makes some changes for the better (most of them tbh), and a few weird ones that newbies won't even find.

Important part about the dark urge character : they are actually not predetermined. You can customize everything but the background and they are meant to be a player character. The dark urge is a fairly crass character, and a stark contrast to the very vanilla Tav ( thats how the generic player character is called by the community)
@tortoiseoflegends4466
@tortoiseoflegends4466 Ай бұрын
Honestly I wish Dark Urge was just the default, the vanilla Tav kinda just sucks for roleplay. You're always from Baldurs Gate, your history has no effect at all on dialogue and Tav has no actual storyof their own unlike the entire cast and Durge. You're just along for the ride with these other people who actually have backgrounds and history in the world.

>Honestly I wish Dark Urge was just the default, the vanilla Tav kinda just sucks for roleplay. That depends on roleplay and what you do as RP, people creat character for DnD campaign, including backstories, custom character is a subgenre staple for any tabletop based game, it is part of RP and doesn't suck for a lot of people who prefer closer to tabletop experience. Same with silent protagonist. I would hate . I don't need a predetermined backstory to RP, especially with certain events happening, I write my own for each character, just like for DnD campaign/adventure. So no, Durge shouldn't be default, it is there for people to pick, but even Larian (Swen) said it is better for second playthrough >You're always from Baldurs Gate, not as drow, gith, duergar, deep gnome and plenty of other races/subraces you're not

So, without spoiling anything, I will say that you don't have a specific timer for getting a cure. Many NPCs will say things like "you only have days" but there are reasons why you are special (spoilers). I only say this because many people hear that they only have a few days and hold off of taking any Long Rests for fear that they will die by prigressing the days. Also, as others have said, try to allow yourself to think outside the box of being a video game, Larian has taken extraordinary care to allow for MANY solutions
