With a housing crisis sending rents soaring and homelessness skyrocketing, a growing number of people in California are turning to living in RVs, trailers and other vehicles as an alternative to life on the streets. “They say that we're not homeless. But we are homeless,” says Beau Beard, who lives in an RV on a stretch of road not far from Los Angels’ Venice Beach. “We're like in the grey area. So as far as giving out housing and stuff like that, we're last on the list."

That is my daughter ( Tamra) speaking up. I heard Traci Park cleared that area last week. Now I din't know where she is. It is f ing heart breaking. Say a prayer!! Sincerely, MOM of a homeless daughter, yes! And pls don't judge me; I try ( tried) to help her... our system is failing us. I am raising her Son...

your daughter is homeless and you're blaming "the system?" San Bernardino is 60 miles from LA and you can buy a house for under $100K. Does your daughter work?

@@royharper2003Not everyone has a deposit for even a rental bond let alone a home down payment, not even for a $100K. You need to open your eyes as the system has failed and if you look closer it was designed to fail. For decades money has been squeezed out of services for citizens to be redirected elsewhere. There are working homeless people, if you can understand that then you know the society is imbalanced and mismanaged (intentionally). Veterans that placed their lives in harms way only to come back as an invalid and unable to find a living are on the streets. A system that is fair and effective should be giving them automatic ample support (home, food and clothing) for life. But instead able bodied people that have not even contributed to the country let alone placed their life at risk for the country are getting the support - for LIFE.

Those people are at least lucky enough to afford RVs to live in. RVs will keep you warm and dry, unlike tents that leak and have no heating/AC.

Until the Rv stops moving (need fuel or repairs) or no longer road legal (cannot afford inspection, fees and insurance) they take it away from you. That is usually the case and replaced by recent homeless in Rv that can still support it. The previous road occupier is now genuinely homeless on the street or dead (sick, cannot afford medicine, victim of open air violence) or missing (human trafficking/ especially if young and attractive etc.

California has 1/3 of homeless people in the US because of climate, state support structures for the indigent, and the lack of services in the rest of the country for homeless people and those in need.

I have been hearing that many households live pay check to pay check and are only one crisis away from homelessness. This report depicts the true reality for many people out there. So sad.

I bought a 2016 Mercedes-Benz Class B rv when covid hit, for $21,000 from the insurance auction, i fixed her up and I've been living rent free. I don't consider myself homeless, i have an online business selling things and i make at least $4500 a month. Im saving for a home and I'm close to having enough.

We have no social programs in the usa. and lots of homeless people. California is where they come because the weather is good. France is much, much easier to live in. In the USA we have to work all of the time. This report is skewed. I live in California and I am also French.

They dump raw sewage into storm drains that go directly into the water at Venice beach and other beaches around LA. If only tourists knew they are swimming in raw sewage😢

You could point to any demographic in the world and describe their struggles as a crisis. In 1999 I bought an RV and sold my home to follow my work around the U.S. I did this for 10 years and not once did I consider myself as homeless. My RV was nicer than most homes I had lived in and a lot more convenient. I could park it in the middle of a National Forest and live for weeks or months without having a problem. As for rent in your area being too high, it's your refusal to move to a place with affordable rent that's the problem, not the cost of rent. No one is stopping you from leaving California.

The USA does have a crisis we have no aide for any one. Or very little. That is why we are willing to reinvent ourselves. When you ain't got nothing you ain't got nothing to loose. Very different from France,

"It's your problem, just ditch your family and friends and move far away." That is not a solution to the preventable aspects of this problem. I gather you wouldn't mind packing your bags and moving to Alabama to reduce cost of living at the expense of losing close proximity to family and losing a community you know and love. That is not the case for many people. To the extent that housing costs have been driven up by preventable causes like Blackrock swooping up large swathes of properties to form a monopoly and rent out properties at jacked up prices, we have a problem that could be addressed with legislation. Kick hedge funds out of real estate. Prevent real estate monopolies. Write your senator and congresspeople. Every once in a while, enough pressure from constituents can drive them to do something for humanity rather than kowtow to corporate donors like the corporatocratic out-of-touch dingbats that they are.

I always thought that such housing does not have to be seen as something that only poor people have. To have mobile housing is cost effective and actually can work for the right people. But what these poor people have to go through because they can not pay an unbelievable 3000 dollar a month rent, that is very sad.

I got all the sympathy in the world for people who have jobs and work hard but are forced into an RV/van/car/etc because of crazy high rent prices. It’s insane to me that people working 40+ hours a week are homeless.
