I drive a paid off 2010 Mini Cooper that I purchased because I knew the fuel and servicing costs would be next to nothing! The key is to keep your bills low to generate surplus cash flow. I still love that car and am sad that I am going to have to replace it one day. The concept that transformed my financial life came from economics: Marginal utility. That is the increase in happiness from each additional dollar spent. Gas money is about the lowest marginal utility per dollar there is for me. And a super expensive new car vs my paid off old love also would not generate much extra happiness per dollar. The savings from no car payment feels like FREEDOM!

Getting out of debt is the key. If you are in debt you are throwing away money on interest. Once I got out of debt it opened a whole new world. I got a month ahead on my bills. So that now I pay everything on the 1st no matter the due date and then I am done.
