We went to Natchez, Mississippi for vacation and found the perfect souvenir! We found an abandoned Victorian home to add to our Restoration projects.
This beautiful 1900 Victorian has been vacant for 10 years. We weren’t even looking for another DIY project house, but this beauty was too good to pass up.
Located in one of the loveliest towns in the South, once we are finished renovating (rehabilitating) this home she will be for sale. She’ll make a great single family home, or airBNB in this beautiful tourist vacation town.
One block from the 100 foot bluff overlooking the Mighty Mississippi, and one block from the downtown bandstand, you can walk to all Natchez has to offer. You won’t believe the sunsets over the river, and the views of the Annual Balloon Festival Hosted by the Historic Natchez Foundation from your front porch!
Join us over the coming months as we restore the historic home to her former glory!

The doorbell was on the back door because it was a “delivery” space. Many old houses..like mine.. backed to an alley way. The ice man, milk man some areas you had the fishmonger/butcher would make deliveries by driving up the alley and ringing the back door bell. I had an old house that had a back door bell and right next to it was a built in ice box.

I was going to say this! In old fashioned homes it was also the case that they might not use the front door unless people were being married or buried. My husband's family used to come and go from the backdoors of both my mother-in-law's and grandmother-in-laws homes. In fact that whole side of the family would've been very put out if someone had come and knocked on the front door.

In fact, it was rude for children, trades people or shop deliveries to come to the front door. I was born in the early 1950's and it was still the rule as a kid, unless I was with my mother or dad I went to back doors to knock for my friends or with a note to the lady from my mom. Only "proper" guests came to the front. (Notes were sometimes sent to neighbors via kids because a lot of people still didn't have phones in the 50's. Maybe half the kids I knew didn't have phones at home and if they did, they were party lines where 2 or more homes shared a phone line.)

Blue My parents bought 2 brand new homes in the 60s & 70's & we never used the front doors. Always had a backdoor that led to the kitchen or came in thru the garage. It's funny too because we had one of those Nu-Tone intercoms at the front 😆

Tell us more about your built-in icebox. I seen a Grand house once that was like a mansion it had a Carriage Way and then a place for them to deliver a big block of ice to go into a icebox to the house-later it became a broom closet - a big broom closet.

"Pearl" is a dynamite name for both a person and a house. She's gorgeous. Love the asymmetric configuration to the rooms - almost "rounded." Pearl "moves" well, *tiles wonderful , that entry way, again, rounded/special. Enjoy her.

Nobody who loves old homes could resist this one. One feature more wonderful than the one before. Lights, tile, doors, fireplace mantels, transoms... I enjoy your tours much more than others, often I stop watching others bc they move too fast, show their face more than the rooms, or skip interesting features. I don't mean to be unkind, but the background music is distracting, you truly don't need it. Nobody will be bored listening to you and seeing this lovely channel. I love how you love these treasures of history.

You are bound to find many other things that make Pearl the “Pearl of Natchez”. Carry on…we can hardly wait to see what you do. Thank you for loving Pearl. Someone else did in times gone by.

What a treasure house! ❤️❤️❤️ The colors of the glazed tiles are so lovely, and that old range in the kitchen... wow! That has seen some serious southern fried chicken dinners no doubt. The whole house is full of charm and I can see why it only took you two minutes to fall in love. I look forward to seeing what you do to restore her glory.

Love her! I would tuck the washer and dryer into the catering nook and make the back porch into a quiet space to enjoy the views of the back yard...or a mud room. I think the door bell was on the back door because that's where her catering customers came to get their purchases. I would absolutely make that back sleeping porch into an ensuite. The light in there is fantastic. There you go...all my opinions in one comment lol Much love from Nova Scotia!!

yeah it would make a great mudroom. In my grandparents' old Queen Anne home, razed decades ago, there was a tiny back porch with windows. The morning sun flooded it and my grandfather had an easy chair in there where he would read his newspapers and relax. I so remember that amazing home in my mind. There was the same type of crank doorbell on the side door of the wrap around front porch -- we kids would ring it and run away. Disturbing the adults with its horrendously loud clanging. What I could have done with that house to restore it. I often imagine what I would do if it were mine.

I grew up in Natchez, moved away and I moved back and I know very well the sweet family who used to live in this home. It turns out one of rhe boys who threw the darts in the closet door just happened to be one of my brothers very best friends. We went to the same church and have known them and that house my whole life. I can’t wait to see how y’all update this beautiful home, and I’m glad you are keeping the footprint and the dart holes in rhe dloset. A lot of love happened in that home and whoever ends up living there I’m sure will feel it all around them.

Laine, this house would be perfect for a - let me call them - "Beginner restorer." There's lot's to do, but the majority of the pieces are there, and I didn't see any major mechanical issues that disrupt a restorer. Since you and Kevin bought the house, I can rest assured it'll be properly restored.

I love this house. My choice for the bathrooms is to close the existing bathroom from the bedroom and make it the community bathroom and make the backroom the master bathroom. The backroom doesn't have the nice details of the other bedrooms so it wouldn't make me feel like the character of the house was being demolished. The laundry should be seperate from the bathroom somehow though. Nothing says yuck more than a laundry room in the bathroom. Please keep the pantry. Everyone should have a pantry. The island makes the kitchen seem smaller than it is though. I love a big open kitchen with counters along a couple of the walls and a table to gather with family in the middle. I would buy that house in a minute it's so nice and all on one floor. Perfect for my retired age😊

At least you have the original china cabinet. Mine was removed a decade before I bought the house, to make an unnecessary doorway, the original doorway is right next to it! It was a pass-through type with shelves open to the kitchen on one side, and the dining room on the other, a great idea! I’m hoping to find a same-era unit that fits and restore it someday. Some of the house’s beautiful doors were cut up for paint shelves, too, sad. My restoration was going great until our local Victorian millwork shop, called Victoriana, in San Francisco suddenly shut down. Now that most people have had their fill of Mid-Century Modern, and open-plans, these last 20 years, I think traditional-style homes will become popular again.

Congratulations! Pearl was my grandmother’s middle name. While staying with my grandparents one summer, I walked into the kitchen seeing my giant grandfather hugging grandma when he smelled the wonderful supper she was making. He said “ Beulah Pearl, you’ve made my favorite supper again. What a lucky man I am!” Her small frame stood over her little stove, stirring the fresh green beans with ham & onions and said what I remember her always saying when he interrupted her well orchestrated cooking; “ Oh Sid, stop. This kitchen isn’t big enough for the two of us while I’m cooking.” Wonderful memories.😊

The house my father was born in and I grew up in was built in 1917. The woodwork had been painted several times. We tried stripping it, but the original green paint had bled into the grain of the woodwork, so unfortunately, it had to be re-painted. The house, FYI, had a mantle almost exactly like the one in the dining room. Can't wait to see Pearl all spruced up!!
