After climbing in and out of Bullrush a few times we realized that we had broken the throttle cable. Stranded in the backyard, we had to find a few to replace the cable and get the tank into cover before the weather turns

Seeing the damage of the front and all the hits in the turret it makes me think of the poor tank crew. I'm sure they are looking down on you and liking the effort you are putting into their old unit. Do you know where this tank saw action by chance.

My Dad drove a Sherman in WW2, 19 Armored (NZ Army). His had the Ford Flathead, he said you learned pretty quickly, to be easy coming off the gas at night (when going up to the front line), or they would back fire and let everyone know where you were ... then $hit got real.

Thankfully the majority my country used were either Chrysler or Continental. There were fords here and there, but Canada preferred the radial petrol engines.

Since it's just a show piece now, instead of using a lot of welding wire try some body putty. Once it's painted no-one will know the difference.

When I was in my mid teens a bunch of Sherman's and Stewarts came in from (I think) Libya. They were like $5K each. Came in to port Newark in NJ. I BEGGED my father to loan me the cash but he said "what the hell would you do with that?" A restored Sherman goes for how much now a days??

Depends on if you have its history or not.

@@PugilistCactus Vehicle history...not all that important to overall value. Running condition, completeness, track condition, accessories, whether the main gun is de-milled or not, spare parts, etc...all far, far more important than the vehicle history. Many turreted AFVs are a conglomeration of disparate parts anyway. Trust me, I know.

@@toadstool1404 Most other so-called "restored" vehicles (especially aircraft) are really just scratch built new machines with at most a couple of original parts in them in order to meet the legal criteria of restored. Obviously something as hefty as a tank is going to include a lot of original steel, but lighter restorations are usually scratch builds for the most part.

drive the tank without a turret, I came across some interesting post world war tank uses, where they were turned into bulldozers and scrapers

Thats not post war. Shermans were equipped to do everything besides shooting. They were also used as plows, mine removal vehicles, and a tool to put down a portable bridge. All created within the sherman main service life.
@PugilistCactus

@@davidh266 There wasn't a lack of them, it was just way too costly to move them over sea's. So welding plows to an armored tractor was the best idea ever.

Yes, one family of contractors cut off all they could to get the weight down and it worked great apart from the fuel consumption, which was evil :o)

It looks great, but as you eluded too. Hanging track on the tank is a determinate to it's function and looks hideous.. I love a clean factory looking Sherman, it can't be beat.

The Sherman crews piled whatever they could find on their Shermans- wood, sandbags, concrete- didn't really matter as even the 75L48 gun on the late Panzer IV would punch right through a Sherman. The 75L70 on the Panther, or the 88L56 on the Tiger I? Fughettaboudit. They said it took five Shermans to knock out a Tiger, but the Americans always had that 5th Sherman. What they don't say is how the repair crews had to remove the remains of the crew from the four knocked out Shermans before they could repair them and send them back into action. According to one source, it was impossible to get all the bits of soldier out of all the pipes and wiring, so the repair crews would clean out what they could and then paint the inside of the tank to cover the small.

what kind of fuel does it run on, and how thirsty are the different sherman variants you have. and do they leak fuel and oil like so many old machines tend to do

Diesel or petrol depending on the engine.
@toadstool1404
@toadstool1404 3 жыл бұрын
M4, M4A1, M4A3, M4A4 all gas. M4A2, twin diesels. Depending on the condition and type of motor, may leak some oil. You never want a fuel leak...fire hazard! All thirsty, but if you’re worried about fuel consumption, you can’t afford to own one. Fuel is the CHEAPEST part of owning one of these!

@ostlandr
@ostlandr 3 жыл бұрын
If it's an actual Sherman diesel motor, it would be the GM 6046 "twin" diesel. Two supercharged bus engines on a common crankcase. The other choices were even weirder: www.theshermantank.com/sherman/the-motors-four-motors-made-it-into-production/
