JW Young & Sons build me a centrepin fishing reel - then we go river fishing! Youngs are considered by many to be the benchmark when it comes to building world class centrepin fishing reels. We visit Chris and Vicky in the workshop where these stunning reels are made. We learn about the brands heritage and how they design and make their centrepins, before heading to the river to do some trotting for barbel, chub or roach.
We go fishing with a few different types of centrepin reels, including the Trudex Mk3, Triton and the Ray Walton centrepin that we built in their workshop.

I have a J W Young's Purist centrepin which I bought about 15 years ago. It's still the most expensive item of tackle I've ever bought but worth every penny. I've used it for all sorts of species and venues, from float fishing for trout in Scottish rivers to catching carp at commercial fisheries. It's such a pleasure to use.

I am about to receive my 4” Heritage Limited Edition soon. Can’t wait to pair it up to my float rod and catch some nice carp. I feel proud becoming part of a privileged group of avid anglers who appreciate JW Young’s fine craftmanship !

Yes. what I’ve learnt is that JW customers are so dialled into the heritage… which is so important to fishing beyond the brand. 👌🙌

I was lucky enough to work for Youngs under Jim Young and Sally Bayliss with Garry Mills as my assembly manager when they were still here in Redditch. Will be the best job ill ever have in my lifetime.

@@Lifeonthebank no, this was before Masterline acquired the business, I worked there up until it was sold to Masterline and moved to Tewkesbury around 2001. We were still located in Redditch on the Enfield estate before that 👍🏻

Nick - they are amazing reels! - so glad that you commented that they' 'don't all have to be big fish' - a small bag of nice Roach, Dace, small Chublets, is just as satisfying, probably more so when you consider the bites you get!, than 1 lunker. Just my opinion - as I have said before, I will fish for anything!

100% … I feel it’s important to enjoy the process, and these reels certainly make fishing a complete joy. A few silvers on a winters day still feels very special 🙂

Love my RW Rolling Pins. Have 3 of them and the Green MK2 Lightweight is absolutely stunning. Having had Barbel to over 14lb on them - there is something about catching big barbel on a pin that you just don’t get from a FS reel JW Youngs service is superb too well recommended

I’ve been using the Super Lightweight quite a lot. A really nice reel, particularly when taking a mobile approach. I agree, something special about catching them on the pin 👌👌👌

Are these rolling pins bad for line twist with mono? I was looking at one for margin carp fishing on stillwaters.

O M G, just how lucky are you ??? ( check the bottom of his shoes 😂 ) Absolutely superb reels and probably second to none. Looks like you not only had a great time at JW Young but an even better time on the bank. I have my father's Alcocks flikem, probably around 70 plus years old, ( bought for him by Mum as a wedding present before I was born) I'll be 71 in Feb. I believe it is marked pat pending ?. You certainly know how to enjoy yourself and get some beautiful rewards along the way. I guess they got the twist and cast from the old Alvey reels from way back in the day when I was a mere lad. To be honest I am very surprised that no-one has done this with a pin a long time ago 😳 🤔. As always excellent video from you, great content and I sincerely hope that you will care for and cherish your lovely new gift, that beautiful pin. Cheers 🍻 mate Les.

Yes, I feel very lucky to have taken away such a lovely reel. I really like it in green too. The reel twist is great. I’ve loaded it with braid to prevent line twist and it’s working really nicely! Alcocks is another highly respected brand. Sounds like you own some lovely bits of tackle. Thanks for watching the video. I’m glad you liked it. 😁🙏🎣

I’m looking forward to using mine for everything on a float rod, from commercial bashing, to Tench fishing and finally trotting for Barbel. It’s going to be a great 2024 with one, rod one reel challenge for its duration.

I was mainly using mine on the river, but this year used it a fair amount on stillwaters for tench and crucians. A lovely way to fish! Good luck!

@@Lifeonthebank I have a quaint Commercial surrounded by trees which I usually fish after work during a summers evening. It’s 5 minutes from my home so it’s a no brainier and, this pool has a healthy head of Carp from 3lb to mid Teens, this will be great sport on a pin in the margins.

Wow Nick that’s amazing! What beautiful reels and the fact you got to watch one being made and to use it is awesome. It’s a dream of mine to eventually own one of these reels, it’s on my one of many items to buy when I retire in the next three years.

It’s such a beautiful way to fish. You don’t need to catch huge fish, you just need to enjoy the process … and the pins certainly help with this! 🙂

Unless your using braid the ray walton is terrible for line twist

I’m using the ray walton with braid in this video for that exact reason. Worked fine with braid 👍

You sure that was the Ray Walton? I only use that at the end of the video and it was definitely braid. Glad you mentioned it here though tbh. Something I probably should have mentioned in the video 👍
