We bypassed AWD SmartTrak system! //Bravada Episode 13

Quick run down of the SmartTrak AWD on this 1998 Bravada, it’s different on older models
First off this Bravada is on the same chassis as a 4x4 Blazer. It’s difference is the AWD transfer case and live front axle(no actuator) and no controls to tell it to go into AWD where as the Blazer/Jimmy models had a push button activated 4x4
This SmartTrak system is not ALL-TIME ALL WHEEL DRIVE, it is in 2 wheel drive until the SmartTrak kicks in.
How does the system activate? The vehicle is constantly reading the front wheel speed and rear wheel speed.
Front wheels speed reads via the ABS/speed sensors that are mount on the front wheel hubs.
Rear wheel speed is read via the transmission/transfercase speed sensor.
When the computer senses the rear wheels turning faster than the front wheels (losing traction) it sends a signal to the transfer case actuator. When this happens the front driveshaft it’s activated, sending power to the front wheels temporarily.
And that’s my problem with the system, no control of its activation and it’s only temporary when it does activate
The transfercase is NP136 and from what I understand was available in AstroVan as well.
It has 2 modes 2WD and AWD, unlike the Blazer/Jimmy that has 4 modes 2WD Hi, Neutral, 4x4 Hi and 4x4 Lo
The actuator only two wires going to it so what I did was take a 3 way toggle switch and wired it up for 2WD / no power to wires / AWD
I simply switched the polarity to make the actuator go the other way
To be clear we’ve only bench tested this so far but hopefully we can verify that it works good

So, is it 2 positive wires you send to the solenoid plug, and it grounds itself? Or one ground and one positive? Great work. I can't wait for the next video.

One ground, one positive The switch changes the polarity of the woods to make the electric motor turn the other way

I’ve got a better style switch for it I’m installing in the next video. It’s just like it except momentary so it doesn’t send power for too long

I thought the rear ends that came in them were the bigger 8.5. Mine says Gt4 and G80.

No they are 7.5 or at least ours is. Gt4 is gear ratio and g80 is limited slip

U have done a lot of things im very interested in. I have some C5 rims im about to put on but dont know what spacers to use. The rear end in my 98 is narrower than in the front. Im also trying to decide which size tires to run because the fronts are 17s and the rear are 18s. I havd it figured out i think a 245/50r17 and 275/40r18 are pretty dang close in circumference. Only .1 difference. 26.7 and 26.6 so i hope it works. I plan to do a mercruiser intake and fuel injection swap also plan to buy an ebay turbo kit soon. I cant afford or find a typhoon so thats my cheap reneck plan to make my own. Thanks for any help.

Bro you dont know how long a waiting for someone to do this i have to replace my transfer case and wanted to find out how to make it stay in awd. Can you show how you wired it up to the switch in the next video?

Yes that’s a great idea! Good thing about the switch I installed is it can be in 2wd unless I want the AWD 😎

The smart-trac system is bypassed completely and is totally controlled by the switch. I’m gonna do a video sometime on the switch

is it possible to make a 94 gauge cluster with a tach work in a 95 without a tach? or will i have to rewire everything? do the clusters without tachs have the same wiring as the ones that do have them?

I'm also in this same boat except the cluster I want to use for my '94 with a '95 CPI 4.3 is out of a '96 with obd 2. That's one thing youll have to look into that I haven't yet. Either way their should be a RPM signal wire somewhere and you should be able to tap that into the RPM signal on the cluster side

@@s10life the junkyard above my house has a rare 94 100 mph cluster with tach used in trucks with the 4.3 vortec thats the one im planning on getting. my dad had a 94 2 tone black and silver single cab that had it.

I’m not sure about the early 2nd gens but our ‘98 Bravada cluster reads up to 120mph if you get lucky enough to find one
