Thank you so much for making this video! We are in our 5th grade year, and it feels like our math curriculum is just not working for us. I’ve been researching various options for next year. It really helped to hear your pros and cons for the various math programs you’ve tried. Thank you for sharing! I will definitely look into Saxon w/ The Math Lady!

Glad you are so attentive to your daughter's needs and willing to change it up! We started the year with TGATB simply K math. My daughter was always excited for it. It was really beautiful. However, she didn't retain info and wasn't gaining good number sense. I also found it frustrating that there is no troubleshooting for the parent. All you have is what is written in each lesson. We switched to Kindergarten Math with Confidence. The teacherd guide is the main book and gives the parent so much (though not too much!) Info to know the why of things and how to work on trouble areas. Things are going so much better. We are now using TGATB for review work.

YES TO MATH WITH CONFIDENCE!!! We used it for Kindergarten and 1st grade. The author will come out with the 2nd grade curriculum right on time for my daughter to start that grade next summer. A grade balance of hands-on games and worksheets. The author also has a website with all kinds of helpful tips for picking a math curriculum, EVEN IF you don't pick her published resources.

Nicole, this is exactly how it played out for us this school year as well. We started out with the new Simply Math K and 1 for my girls. Then switched to Math With Confidence. They learned and retained so much more using MWC. And they use TGTB books as daily practice. 😊

I’m a 2nd year homeschooler too. We started Saxon last year and continued this year (8/7 for 7th grade and 6/5 for 5th.). No plans to change in the future. It’s not exciting or pretty but it’s super solid with a good blend of mastery/spiral IMO.

Saxon is a classic. I used Saxon in middle school and abeka for early elementary at a Christian school. In highschool, I started taking college algebra at my community college (because my hs didn’t offer dual credits), and I breezed through it. I ended up with a physics degree with a minor in math so I’d say I was well prepared. I ended up teaching Saxon algebra 2 at a homeschool hybrid program and they use Abeka for k-3 then transition to 5/4. Most kids find Saxon to be easy with that transition but it’s good because the math is easy while the executive function transitions to be more difficult as math goes away from the worksheet to having to write out problems, and having to do multistep problems. I feel like it’s a gentle transition yet a solid math foundation. Good on you for not jumping her up too fast. With Saxon it is easy to go faster once she gets it. She can also skip 8/7 and do Algebra 1/2 or vice versa if she’s finding that easy. And she can also skip geometry if doing Saxon Advanced math later on too. (Shoreman math is similar to Saxon and based on Saxon but with more prep for standardized tests in those later years and they offer that same integrated geometry approach that Saxon started out with). I love hearing your updates!
@brittanyolga

Thank you so much for this! So far our transition to Saxon has been so easy. I am so happy that I started her on Saxon 6/5 because she is really grasping a greater understanding of previous taught concepts. I have seen definitely will take a look at Shoreman math too once we get into high school. 😍

Wow, I feel like we are on the same math journey.....I think the last time I commented we had gone back to Abeka....well after that we went back to Simply Good and Beautiful and we are just not happy. I had just printed out the saxon placement test and have been watching some of the reviews on it and think we are definitely going with it for 5th grade. Trying to decide what to do for the rest of this year...and it may be to switch now. I have looked at some of Nicole the math lady's videos and they look awesome. So, I will see.

Yes ,we are on the same math journey 😩. Every time you comment on my update videos I know you know the real struggle. Best of luck with you guys math journey. Please keep me updated. 😊

This is so helpful! We have been on the never ending math saga. I feel like every program is either too conceptual or too procedural. It feels like the hardest subject to fit. I was about to order the good and the beautiful, but we definitely need a good bit of practice. We used abeka in the beginning and I felt like it spiraled too quickly and she wasn't getting the concepts. We used math u see and I also enjoyed the video lesson aspect of that program but we are in Georgia also and have to test every three years starting next year in third so we really need something works on grad level. Sorry that was a novel, but it is so frustrating fitting math. 🤯

My son is dyslexic and we STRUGGLE with math....I have tried Good and Beautiful also, found there is not enough review but it is BEAUTIFUL, lol:) Also tried Christian Light Education (CLE). They have 10 wook books for each year (hence the word "light" because they are broken down into 10 workbooks, which take around 3 weeks to do for each workbook). Starting in 4th grade, you can also purchase a traditional textbook if you prefer over workbook. I just like my son to be able to write in a workbook. Christian Light is VERY affordable VERY, VERY, VERY well done. It feel it is incremental, but introducing new concept from time to time....great for kids who need lots of review. From what I have read, it is considered on the advance side for "old school math" so I set my son one year back (3rd grade math even though he is in fourth grade). I also really like BJU math too...not quite as much review as Christian Light but still a GREAT curriculum. The biggest problem with many math curriculums today (from what my 80 year old mother told me) is there is not enough review. You don't practice a piano piece a few times and move on to the next one and expect perfection or mastery. You may have to practice 100s of times depending on how difficult the piece is. My mother taught algebra in public school in the 1960s and 1970s... a lot of "modern" math tries to push kids too hard before they are developmentally ready for it. For some kids this works, but sadly this "push method" catches up with them later. I like to use the analogy... look that kid can do the "layup" in basketball but cannot dribble the ball down the court....same idea in math if you push too hard to "advance" and do not develop the fundamentals well then you will probably face more challenges later on. Don't feel badly about changing curriculums. It is a process to find the right fit for YOUR child, and sometimes it takes a few school years to tweak things. And it might change from time to time again and that is OKAY! That is why we homeschool. We are able to choose the BEST option for our kids for each season of life:) On a side note, I have not tried SAXON Math but I just wanted to comment on what worked for my struggling dyslexic son:) Looks like you are a caring mom and you will in end find the right fit for your children!

Thank you so much for this beautiful comment. I was feeling a little guilty with my switch mid-year. However, now that we are doing Saxon I can see my daughter growth in math. We have not had any tears and I rarely have to tell her to get started in math. It has been such a beautiful shift in our homeschool. I was so close to trying Christian light Math next because I heard such great things about it as well. Thank you so much for sharing your math journey as well. I hope you all have a strong end to your homeschool year 🥰.

We have used a lot of Abeka math in the early years but...have not been a fan of it for higher grades. I actually did Abeka math all through high school and it was the only subject I ever hated--I went on to take a math class in college, and I was like, "Why is this so easy?!!" The college math class was easier than all my high school math classes simply because it was a very well-done class. Saxon! It's been around forever for a reason. I think I did Saxon math for a few years, around the same age as your daughter.
