I've used MMO on a lot of antique engines to clean them up. It also works good for loosening carbon build up when cleaning heads if you don't have a parts washer. If an engine has stuck rings from sitting, an old timers trick I learned is to pour MMO into the cylinder and let it set for a day or two and it will free the rings up. I tried it once and it actually worked!

AutoZone's prices are beyond ridiculous. I remember when they came to town back in the early 90's, they undercut all of the Mom and Pop auto parts stores until they put them all out of business over the course of the next 10 years and then raised their prices through the roof once the competition was eliminated. I only go there to drop off my used Walmart oil and old oil filters because they are only about a mile from my house and Walmart is about 4 miles. I figure they deserve it because of how they did all of the local parts stores.

I buy oil at the zone or something similar for one reason, they provide an excellent service to the community. Walmart's deals are unbeatable but I would hate to see the autoparts stores disappear. Walmart doesn't have a loan-a-tool program, Walmart won't go out and help the old lady put her windshield wipers on, they won't scan people car codes for free. These things help people a lot, especially those who are on a very tight budget or don't have anyone to help them. Last time I was in autozone, the cashier there had changed a very old womans wipers and filled her washer fluid. Anyone can do that right, well not the 80 year old lady. Her husband used to take care of it for her, he passed and now she has no one to help. That cashier was her hero that day, she was thanking him up and down. That is why is still by oil from autozone.

The oil will be from one of the few oil companies out there, sure they get to choose how many dispersants and what not however they won't be bad. I believe Project Farms did a thing on motor oils and super tech on his list was actually quite good, especially for the price. @ Ford Boss Me: Ok, 1st off, this is going to be a long read. But I hope informative and even slightly funny at times. I'm old. Over twice your age I would say. Been rode hard and put up wet more times than I can count over the years, but still kicking. Was in the Automotive Industry most of my life to some extent, until I finally retired. Started working on cars when I was 11 yrs old, 1964. First one was a 1952 Belair, Flathead 6 cyl., 3-speed on the tree. I just had a knack for fixing cars from an early age. I used to tear apart most of my toys in the 50's to see how they worked (started at the age of 4 according to my parents) then I'd put them back together, and they still worked, to my amazement, lol. MMO (1st came out in 1923') is something that I've used (I buy it by the 4-pack, 1-gal jugs @ a time, as it's just cheaper this way in the long run), and I've always run-it in every piece of equipment I've ever owned that runs a gasoline engine, from the very beginning too. That way the MMO doesn't have to do a lot of cleaning, per-say, like you're trying to do with this engine that's already pretty dirty, but now looking much better! However, over time the MMO 'will clean' the inside of your engine to the point that it's 'almost' spotless and Brand New looking once again. Ya just gotta give it some time is all. I put MMO in my fuel too @ every fill-up. 1oz per-gal. :-) Now, you want the MMO to do it's job, but not too fast. This is an 'over a period of time' ordeal type of thing to get the inside of your engine looking clean again. The Lucas will not change the color of the oil. And it shouldn't affect any outcome of your MMO testing. However, it will lift the weight viscosity (which is good) of the oil which is most definitely causing thinning of the oil by putting too much MMO in when you've changed your oil like you've been doing. However, I think under normal circumstances a Quart of MMO is way too much. But then again, if you're going to change the oil and filter every 800-900 miles or so, then it'll probably be Ok for this experiment. But only for a short while, seeing how it is Summer now. When changing my oil in my 05' Chevy Trailblazer inline 6cyl (uses 6.5 qts) I use the same, exact brand oil you're using, but in a 5w30. And I take a quart bottle of MMO and a quart bottle of Lucas and add 16oz of each to every oil change. Been doing this for a very long time now. Engine clean, and running super smooth! This engine still has lots of power, for what it is too. But way back in the day when I first started driving (1968') I was using Havoline 10w40. But in the 80's, the powers that be @ Havoline changed their formula, and the specific stench that it had (which most anyone old enough from back then that remembers this will know exactly what I'm talking about) suddenly disappeared? That's when I knew that they had changed their formula. But I didn't know if it was for the good or the bad? So I switched over to Valvoline 10w40 in my personal stuff. But I was already running Valvoline 20w50 in my races cars, plus a little STP ta-boot, seeing how I'm from Richard Petty's neck of the woods. :-/~ Now, all this was waaay before before the SuperTech Brand Oil ever came out. Back before Synthetic oils were ever heard of in my neck of the woods. But Synthetic Oil has been around since 1929. It's just that the public wasn't able to buy it way back then like we can now. Mostly used in the Industrial areas and the Airplane Industry back then. Even in the 80's when I owned an Automotive Parts Store, there were NO Synthetic Oils available for me to buy for my Parts Store? Weird huh? Well, at least not through any of the Oil Distributors I dealt with from way back then there wasn't. Now, this beef about Pennzoil. Way back in the day all Pennsylvania Crude Oils were paraffin based. They had a waxy base that would cause problems down the road by coating everything inside the engine with this wax. Same thing with Quaker State Oils. Both Pennsylvania Crude Oils. This is where the trouble came in back in the day with the old oil formulas. But I suspect that things have changed since then, for the better, for the Pennsylvania Crude Oils. PS: never switch from running whatever type of oil you're running over to Castor Oil. if you do, you'll wish you never did. Engine will suddenly start leaking and consuming oil like it never had before. Ask me how I know! But as soon as a switched back to Valvoline it stopped leaking and burning oil! (350 cub., Small Block Chevy Engine). Have you ever seen the inside of an engine that was run on 30w non-detergent Pennzoil or Quaker State before where it wasn't serviced properly? Oh, My, Goodness! What a mess! First one I ran into I filled a 5-gal bucket of the nattiest, stickiest, gooey, black oil sludge I'd ever seen before, and I filled a 5-gal bucket-up just from cleaning under the valve covers, top of the heads and under the intake alone. Don't even know how this truck was still running when it rolled into the shop? But that was the beast of a non-detergent oil that hadn't been changed in a loooong time, apparently. No detergents in that oil at all. Ended up just pulling the engine out and cleaning it right. Oil pan was worst than the top of the engine too. Yuck! What a mess. Never again did I ever tackle an engine that was as filthy dirty as that engine was - ever again! I'd just send them on down the road to some other sucker to work on. :-) grin Love what you're doing! Keep at it. And I know that there are plenty of armchair, Online, wannabe (never been) mechanics out there that are wanting to tell you exactly what to do. You're a smart guy. Only listen to the ones that have good morals and know what they're actually talking about when it comes to vehicles, and you won't go wrong. Selah (Told ya it was going to be a looong one, lol. Blessings! Even though you are a Ford Guy. Ha! :-/

I run a Classic car Dealership and the first thing we do is change the oil and throw a quart of MMO in it and run it for 100 ish miles and then change all the gaskets and seals and put good oil in it. Were not like Maple Motors or one of those, we sell mostly running and driving project cars, we'll buy a car for 5k, go through the engine, fuel system and brakes, replace what needs replaced and sell them to someone looking for a running and driving project car. Running MMO and cleaning the internals of the engine saves us alot of time and alot of money because that's less we have to chase down.

On a different note I'd like to give you a heads up about something I used to experience back in the day, especially on the old Ford Windsor engines but it holds true for any engine with a nylon timing gear. There used to be a saying among the Ford mechanics concerning the 221 through 351 engine timing chains which was "replace them at 50 because they go at 75" meaning the timing chain would give out at 75 thousand miles. The top nylon gear used to become brittle and pieces would chip off and make the top gear become physically smaller over time. Eventually the gear would become so small that the chain would jump a tooth and I can tell you from experience that they will run two teeth out of line but they won't run three. After I replaced the timing chain and gears it was just a matter of time before the customer came back with the oil light on at an idle. Very small pieces of nylon would get past the screen in the pickup and grind down the gears in the oil pump and I often recommended a new oil pump when replacing the chain and gears to save the customer from making a second trip later on. I saw the grit on your finger that you scraped out of the oil filter and the only way it got into the filter was by being picked up by the oil pump. When this cleaning experiment is through and you are satisfied with the cleanliness of the engine I would suggest that you give some thought to installing a new oil pump. Lower oil pressure may not necessarily be because Marvel Mystery Oil is thinning out the oil. If you are running the original oil pump that has about 180 thousand miles on it and you start tossing grit into the oil through cleaning, you may be accelerating wear on oil pump gears that are already worn from age and use. The Marvel Mystery Oil may also be dissolving sludge within the oil pump gear housing so that, along with the grit picked up in the crankcase is all going through the oil pump gears before it reaches the filter. One final note. I suffered catastrophic engine damage on my beloved 1965 Mustang GT Fastback because the "friend" who rebuilt the engine did not spin the oil pump by hand before installing it. He just put the pump in the engine and primed it with a drill. What he would have felt if he had spun it by hand was that the bottom plate was warped and the gears would get hung up and stop turning. Because he used a drill to prime it without first spinning the pump by hand, the gears scraped metal off the bottom plate and wiped out a newly rebuilt engine in less than 100 miles. It destroyed the pistons, scored the cylinders, damaged the crank journals, plus the main, rod, and camshaft bearings, wiped out the camshaft, and it even machined a groove in the camshaft thrust plate. Luckily my valuable 289 Hipo heads came through unharmed but the engine itself is junk because I don't have an extra two thousand dollars to have it repaired. So if you elect to install a new oil pump I highly recommend that you remove the bottom plate and put it on some sandpaper on a piece of glass and make sure it is true. I took a new oil pump to a machine shop and they had to give the bottom plate a few passes on a machine to make it level. Quality control is not what it used to be and I do not want to see you or anyone else have to go through what I went through because of poor quality control or in my case, poor quality control and a very careless "friend" who didn't take the time to spin the oil pump by hand before putting it in my engine. So if you decide to install a new oil pump after this experiment is over please check it very carefully before you put it in the engine.

@@stuartbuckley8720 I was very surprised because like you I had used Melling pumps in dozens of repairs and never had an issue with them. In fact I think the stock Ford pump for the small block Windsor including the Boss 302 (which is what I had used in the past) are all made by Melling. I don't know if you are using a special line of pumps made for high horsepower racing engines but the one my "friend" installed had a bottom plate that was so warped the gears shaved metal and sent it through the engine. For a short time I thought my "friend" was going to make good on the damage so I started buying new parts and one of the items I bought was another oil pump. It felt okay when I spun it but just to be sure I brought it to a local guy here in Clearwater who is an old time engine builder and has done work for me before and he said he had to plane the bottom plate to make it level. I am glad you never had a problem with them because you have more money invested than I did but based on my experience I would urge you to check any new oil pumps that you plan to use. If you have any used pumps laying around perhaps you could check them and let us know what you find.

When you have a motor this dirty and you're trying to do a thorough cleaning doing some kind of extensive testing would not be a great idea especially in this bad of a condition unless you really want to geek on numbers. When I'm done with the cleaning I will definitely get everything tested because if you look in the community post where I post things as like little paragraphs you can see that I've already planned on doing that I ordered four testing bottles from Blackstone

if you have to run back out to Walmart for more oil filters, The ST8 is the same as the ST16 in except it’s taller. So if the room is available there, than Use that ST8. It has a lot more filtration element in it because of the size of it. So in all honesty more fluid is being pushed through the filter element before the bypass than the other.

Good call on the Lucas! Before emissions came out on class 8 trucks, every truck I worked on with a million miles on the original engine was run with 1 gallon of Lucas, 9 gallons of Rotella 15w-40, and changed every 10k miles. Once egr, dpf’s, and scr catalyst’s became mandated, the oem’s raised the oci’s to 30k and even 60k! on certain engines. It’s no surprise that plugged egr coolers, carbon packing of piston rings, and just about anything with a roller tip on it started to fail. Drivers would say “it’s only got 40k miles on this oil change, the company shop said they change it at 60k miles”. Do you ever check the oil level? “No, they do that once a month at the yard shop”. 🤦🏻

When I change the oil in my cars, I prime the oil filter with mmo before I put it on (maintenence dose) Then I add oil as usual and run it the full interval. If I get an old car that's new to me, I do the 20% thing.I first used it when I locked an old lawn mower up and found mmo in the shed. Turned the lawn mower up, filled the combustion chamber up,and let it sit overnight. Next day set it back down, pulled the cord and it turned over. I put the plug in and it fired up and I used it all summer before I retired it.

I pretty much just use Supertech now because the cost is impossible to beat. It's mostly made by Warren Oil Company and really as long as an oil has an SAE label it meets the standards for that rating or there are heavy fines. Everything else is just additional additives a brand may put in. Heck most of the 'big' brands don't even make all their own oil they just buy it from mixers like Warren and have their additive package added. The Supertech filter was originally made by Wix, but now the contract is with Champion and as far as I can tell looking at them it's the same design and components.

I would do at least a 500 mile update. The buildup is not that bad. I would have done a compression check before and after to see if it cleaned the piston rings. I have used mmo in general aviation years ago for stuck rings a sticking valves. Worked great. If a aircraft sat for many years the compression was usually low. Running mmo for a few hours often returned the compression to normal levels.

If you want a good cleaning oil to complement using the MMO in a higher mileage engine such as his Dodge 360, consider using M1 10W-40 High Mileage or a diesel 15W-40 such as Super Tech for a summer cleaning run with a thin cleaner like MMO.

I've heard mixed reviews about using heavier oil in high mileage engines. Some will say that heavier oils won't get to lifters etc as quickly, thus lighter oils are better at getting where they need to go earlier. "High mileage" oil isn't better at preventing blow by necessarily, but has additives which help seals from drying out. I think that Super Tech oil is actually made by Kirkland Oil, and ranks very well as compared to other brands. I use a splash of MMO in the gas and oil in my lawn equipment, but I've heard not to use it in the gas in vehicles with catalitic converts??? Don't know. MMO has a new blend which is made for turbo charged vehicles, supposed to help lubricate the turbo and help with cool down. Regardless of brands used, the most important things are, check your oil level, and change frequently.

Why not do a used oil analysis? Also, Lucas Oil Stabilizer is nothing but VERY thick oil. In fact, it is so thick, it will thicken your oil far out of grade, and that gets it out of the specs for your engine. I'd like to know if MMO thins the oil and by how much. It might thin it to or even below a 20 weight. A 20 weight probably wont be an issue, but below that could be a problem. Anyway, I enjoy your videos!

But as previously mentioned keep doing these type of oil changes until your engine is almost clean or see a lot less debris in the oil filter.

I guess the throttle body on the carburetor was full of carb build-up and it would be very hard to press and very hard to modulate precise. I wouldnt recommend using the oil stabilizer. its so thick, I dont think it will flow well through the engine. adding one qt of 20W50 would probably be safer. you could also use a slightly thicker oil like a 0W40 or 5W30 euro oil. even at 190k, the clearances should not be so worn that you need a thicker oil.

it wont harm that motor at all but in the newer trucks it may lol

At 190k that engine is at its end of life. Most if the Magnum era 5.2 and 5.9l engines had oil pressure issues due to a pump that wasn't big enough to properly supply oil to the engine and in turn most of these engines died very early

@@claytoncoolidge992 in the ones I have had 10w30 and 0w40 is a bit thin seamed a little more noisy never herd about the oil pumps my current one is a 2001 5.9 has 340k still has 35 psi at idle and 55 driving also don't smoke or any ting still runs like new and I work it hard so it gets put thru hell lol but these are loose built motors heavy oil wont hurt a bit

@@dakotabowes2387 ya 35psi is barely spec. (Factory spec oil pressure specs from all big 3 are 5 psi for every 1000 rpm the engine is capable of and performance specs for racing engine building is 10psi for every 100rpm. Thats the minimum spec.)as the pumps wear you start seeing low oil pressure light at idle witch obviously wears out the bearings and kills them. Everything on the magnums has the oil pump warning about them and the average life span isn't my assumption that's a number provided by sources like car and driver and other consumer report publications. They are good engines that made ok power but were plagued by bad oil pumps and cracked heads. My 98 1500 5.9 went 180k before it died. I bought it from an auction so didn't know how bad it was till I got it. 2 quarts of oil burned every 300 miles bad rings. Rebuilt the engine the first time and a brand new oil pump failed a few days after I got it done and took out the main bearings and currently rebuilding yet again and hopefully the same thing doesn't happen. The landscaping company i used to work for had 5 rams all bought brand new and very well maintained (I was the tech that did all the equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair) and it was common enough to have one lose an engine that I had 2 ready to run engines sitting in the corner of the shop so I could have the engine swapped out and truck running before the next day

They make a low viscosity stabilizer now too. That's better for the worn out newer engines

Honestly love mmo. Use it in my fuel from time to time and it always runs great when I use it. But I wouldn't use it in my oil since it's 0w-20 in my truck and I feel like it would think it out more then it already is

Yes... Our government allows the term "synthetic" when it is not. If you want a true synthetic look for the EURO symbol on the container as only true synthetics can be sold in Europe.

@@oemytech yeah, when I was with the Army stationed in Germany, I did notice their motor oil was much more expensive than ours in the states. They were all full synthetic. And this was 30 years ago! No wonder they don't change their oil near as often as we do. An oil change service is expensive there. Even if you DIY.

Yes, and a court ruling made it that way. Mobil sued Castrol because at the time, Mobil 1 was made from true synthetic Group IV base stocks, and Castrol's version was made from highly refined group III base stocks. The court ruled in Castrol's favor, and Mobil switched to the cheaper Group III base stocks.

supertech is good oil. i would have skipped the lucas too. save it for a knocking engine or something. hdeo like 15w40 diesel oils habe twice the detergents of normal api sp rated oils. i would run rotella or delo next time for evn more cleaning and a thicker mix.

I use Supertech ATF in my engine for flushing. I purchase the 1 gallon ATF. 4 quarts ATF with 1 quart of engine oil. 20 minutes on idle. Drain, add new oil and filter. One or two times a year for high mileage engines.
