Hi Srinath, Let's call a spade a spade. There is no basis for this whole "creating confusion" argument. The film is what it is, and that is lazy filmmaking. Mani Ratnam's film isn't exempt from criticism just because it's a Mani Ratnam film.The main issue with PS, as well as any recent film, is the lack of proper criticism. The reason he is taking on a 500CR project is BECAUSE of the rigid and bleak criticism he has received from the audience for his previous films. He became one of the best because of the accumulation of objections he received throughout his career. It was the AUDIENCE that made him a better artist. There is no film, there is no movie, there is no art in PS - OBJECTIVELY. There's nothing more to it than a piece of content, and the MR knows that. He is not an idiot. Vikram suffered the same fate. Kamal is not an idiot. Content is what it is. You can't justify lazy filmmaking from meticulous creators like Kamal and Mani just because they ARE Kamal and Mani. It is not the intention of choppy editing to create confusion. There is no doubt that editing could lead to confusion, and the best way to disorient someone is to use it's true form of a "cut". Memento and Persona are textbook examples of how to confuse your audience. Another classic example of how to lead your audience when you discover a clue and how to make them follow you when you are missing one is Zodiac. In movies made more than two decades ago, such as Gladiator, Troy, Master and Commander, you can witness a similar and obviously a far better sea battle with clarity. PS, however, is simply dull, apathetic, lazy, and careless. The main problem I see in PS is that it has a lot of sloppy mistakes and tries to pretend that there is a purpose behind it. Simply put, the film lacks a POINT OF VIEW and nobody would care about this 5 years down the road and that's a generous timeframe. No matter how the makers are trying to sell it by jerking off on the "Tamilan Da!" sentiment, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, chances are it is a duck! Solid work man. Keep it up! that is why preproduction story board should have all the details ..before going to the set one should have all the camera angle are already fixed according to the logic and logic breaks..more over animatics (moving story board with music) will bring more clarity than static ones.

Awesome analysis and top-notch choice to use Maniratnam's movie itself as an example to compare the issue in climax. Even I felt the same abnormality while watching the climax. But I had a theory that the choice of shifting the angle and making a little discomfort was intentional as the point is to establish that the ship was stuck in a "Suzhikatru" (i.e., Cyclone) as mentioned in the novel which was never orally established in the film. Kudos to the explanation for making us understand the techniques that we subconsciously were used to watch 100 years of cinema.

And vandhiyathevan is facing south..but arulmozhi ship Mela vandhadhum, "vadapakkam"( north ) nu dialogue varum 15:04 , but actually arul mozhi south direction la dhan turn panra maari irukum..( crct me if am wrong) 5. And 15:25. Vandhiyathevan paakura Direction la paakanumnaa arul mozhi u turn potu dhan paakanum....( It seems left for vandhiyathevan, and his view is beyond arulmozhi, i.e., to the back of arulmozhi)
