Welcome to our run down on portal axles and how we service them on our Toyota Landcruiser 79 Series! Portal axles are a unique after market feature of off-road vehicles like the Landcruiser, offering increased ground clearance and enhanced off-road capability.
In this video, we'll take you behind the scenes of our rigs portal axles, from Marks 4WD, sharing insights into their unique construction and how we keep them in top shape for all our adventures.
Unfortunately that's not all though... During our epic trip to Cape York in 2023, we travelled through the many creek crossings the Northern Peninsular has to offer. Subsequent to this, we stumbled upon some unexpected damage lurking within our axles once they were opened up. From weather-worn components to battle-scarred gears, we'll show you how we spot these issues and prevent further damage to our vehicle.
Whether you're a seasoned off-roader or new to the world of portal axles, this video has valuable insights as to how we keep our Marks portal axels running smoothly and safely on any terrain. So join us as we explore the fascinating world of portal axles and uncover hidden damages along the way!
Please note: While we're passionate about sharing our knowledge, it's important to remember that Tim is not a certified mechanic. We strongly advise against attempting these procedures without proper experience or knowledge. When in doubt, always consult a professional before tinkering with your vehicle.

That was cool! Had no idea about portals until now. Every rig should have portals!

With the removal of those cone washers try sticking a small thin bladed screwdriver into their expansion slot & just twist them out. No need to bash on the axle flange or studs & loosen & stretch in the threads so they eventually snap off under load. I wipe a very thin film of grease on them on re-install so they dont rust or sieze in.

Great info. How do you find them on the road and off-road such as corrugations. Much difference in fuel use
@LifeoftheCromies
@LifeoftheCromies 11 күн бұрын
Hey mate, no real fuel usage difference as the change in gear ratios compensation for the larger tyres and extra drag. They perform like a stock setup on corrugations, just with more clearance.

Good video bro. Do you know how you got water in there in the first place?

I'm pretty sure I forgot to push the breather line in properly when I checked them before we left on the trip, it came out way too easy when I pulled them apart after the trip.

Can you explain how water gets in when they have breathers? And hard facing being worn off is usually heat isn't it? Is it normal to have such portal wear after suuch a short time?
@LifeoftheCromies
@LifeoftheCromies 2 ай бұрын
Hey mate, I had changed the oil in the gearboxes prior to cape and didn't push the breather hose back in properly, it got water in it and then it was over the capacity to spat some oil out the breathers with the excess water resulting in bugger all oil in there. Heat from driving a few thou kms after with minimal oil wore the hard facing.

Portals are awesome to lift and give the car height and articulation. However if and if you bust something remote. Your stuffed as no one remote has supplies for such a thing so repairs could be 10 fold. Not being biased just saying thats all. Love the rig by the way.

Hey great vid about portals, really want to know the pros and cons on the portals as I’m thinking of getting em. Compressor wise, servicing, how tough are they?
@LifeoftheCromies
@LifeoftheCromies 3 ай бұрын
Thanks mate, we love the portals, not noisy at all, arb single comp comes with the kit mounted in the engine bay for the front hubs, I service the rears every 5k kms and fronts every 10k kms. Straight cut gears this wide are pretty strong, I just a decent amount of power on 37s and have not had any issues with damage caused from stress.

Hi mate, these were installed before it was registered. Fuel consumption is about 14.7L per hundred on 37s
