It's a HUGE moment, one we've waited years for. We demolish the derelict house on our farm in Northern Portugal, and prepare to build a traditional stone house from the ground up. Enjoying watching your process/journey. Please forgive me if you are already aware of this - but in case you are not...Wisteria is gorgeous and the blooms smell amazing but if left unchecked, it can be highly invasive and will send up shoots wherever it can, eventually strangling any plant it grows on, including trees. If you don't plan to keep it in a pot, you might make a trellis over a patio and train it over for shade and beauty but best to keep an eye and some good clippers handy. Best wishes!

Tara Recycle that lantern by painting it a beautiful color and put it on a light pole and he’ll love it again. Vintage is great, recycling is great when you can. I’m not a fan of trees around the house though, but that’s just me. We had 13 fall during a nice storm. Luckily, none of them hit the house.

@@Bjmc4uk Even worse when they have preservation orders on them and the roots had undermined two boundary walls, took 6 weeks to obtain permission to lop a branch from an Oak that overhang our front porch, a storm did it first and the porch with it. The Tree Surgeon charged the same to tidy up the bit left as to remove it.

Yes, keep the light. I have just saved 5 Victorian lamposts from being pulled down. It was too expensive to reinstate them. I have asked the council to paint them, in the original colours and use the bars that went across them to hang planters on. I'm a local councillor it was something I could do to help the residents without costing too much money. In actual fact it saved money as the cost of removal would have been quite pricey. The new LED lights, placed in better places illuminate the darkness and old lamposts will brighten the day with their flowers. They were originally saved in the 1960s when the area was redeveloped, a bit of the area's history has been retained.

Single skin buildings are normally what you get in outhouses.. those previous owners over the years must’ve been freezing in winter.. hardy people.. but they just got on with it.. like all our past generations did.. we are all so used to our central heating and double glazing and insulation 🙂🙂 this build is going to be fabulous ❤

If your wisteria is anything like the wisteria I grew up with in Arkansas, I wouldn’t be very worried. It’s a very resilient plant and my parents had to work hard to keep it from taking over.

If you can cut it back hard after flowering, it should be able to be trained onto the new house. It may take a few years before flowering again but it will come back.

Yay! How exciting! Finally the demolition of that old, rotting,derelict house and your beautiful new house construction can begin! Mario is such a blessing! We love the lamp! Thank you Mario! Thank you for that shot of the beautiful, yellow, bearded iris! The wisteria is beautiful, but it can take over a structure and crush it. Be careful where you replant it. There is a house in Sierra Madre, California, called the Wisteria house. The plant is 47 years old and the largest blossoming vine in the world. (Acording to Guinness!) It was planted as a one gallon plant near the front porch, but was left to grow. It eventually destroyed the original house. The vine became so heavy and invasive that it crushed the house. A new house was built a little ways away. It is a private resident, but people can book weddings there under the wisteria. Now there is a Wisteria Festival that opens the property to the public once a year. The plant is so large, so beautiful and the smell is so strong and fragrant that it is famous!

Wow, Wow, Wow! This is simply epic! Mario is a genius and such a wonderful neighbor and friend. And that you honor the people who have lived on the farm before you is so respectful and humble. You guys are the best! I hope you'll get approval from the commune very soon. Building a traditional stone house from scratch is the way to honor the local culture and to preserve it and in a way, you're giving back. Wonderful you guys!

Mario! What an ACE!! How lovely to see progress and know your dream is getting closer to reality. Two days to demolish and clean up the site is fantastic, but with Joao, Cruso and John working hard, Tara had the winning team with super Mario.I am hoping I didn't miss an episode while you were gone Tara, I didn't see the finish of the floor in the stone house. John worked so hard, pouring in his love for you and the boys with his efforts, and producing artistic wonders with the tiles.

Welcome back Tara and the boys. Wow I cant believe the space the house has left, John you definitely made the right decision to now bother saving any roof tiles, that roof was way too rotted to have been safe enough to get anywhere near it. We have a wisteria and even though it is over grown and we are saving to have that sorted out it is beautiful and smells so gorgeous. I realise how powerful the digger is but some of the movements looked small but the house just crumbled. I so happy for you that you are now on the right track to make your family home x

Sawyer is growing up so fast! The "get out of my face" eyebrow drop of scorn was so funny and he made his own decision bed or not. Precious shot of them on tip toe looking over the block wall at the digger. That would make a great photo capture. Do not worry about wisteria, it grows faster than grass. If you have to start over it will do fine.
