learn how to plant the best fall food plots for deer. we destroyed the sunflower food plot to plant a kill plot. sunflowers are good for the soil and building organic matter and its free fertilizer. all we used was a ground hog max and some manual labor.

I think I would have left at least a 5 ft wide strip of those sunflowers for the deer to hide in. You have so much on that farm for the deer to eat. Can't wait for you to say, Big Buck Down! Keep the great video's coming!

For sure. I was going to but just took it all down. That will be ideas for next year. Actually we don’t have enough food. We have more deer now and not enough food. We have on average 15-20 deer at a time feeding in the clover plot.

Also entertaining and informative video, keep it up... also, I dont get the buck on the bag seed either. You can get like 50lbs of clover seed from a co-OP for $100.. buck on the bag clover is $25 for 2 lbs, so 50 lbs would be over $500....

Good stuff. I would encourage you to create a few "wildlife zones" containing blends of grasses and forbs, and leave them be. These zones will provide cover for deer, turkey, rabbits, and gamebirds, increase browse diversity, and will attract pollinators and predatory insects while improving soil quality. Glad to see you are using cover crops like the sunflowers, but when you disk it the pollinators have no place to go. Having dedicated wildlife zones like I described will improve the health of your nearby food plots as well by boosting the predatory insect population in the area and attracting pollinators. They will also attract and hold more wildlife species, improving the entire ecosystem. Good luck!

@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
603 Hunting & Fishing if its first year clover I wouldn’t mow it. Unless it’s flowered up I wouldn’t worry about it. As far at fertilizer I would spray it with micro nutrients from antler Grow. Micro nutrients are more important. Npk is good to everything kinda has its part. Any other questions let me know.

question....if I want a dove food plot with sunflowers and sorghum, is that feasible without a tractor/shedder? I have an ATV, sprayer, lawn roller and groundhog max disk, and 52" garden tractor for mower. Im not against getting a swisher trail mower if that would be beneficial. Im guessing if I let the sunflowers mature for dove seed, the stalks will get to big to mow down. Should I look at millets as a better option for dove and quail? IM in west texas by the way. IM trying to figure out how to plant for deer, quail and turkeys for next year (2024). I got my first two food plots started this fall with the groundhog max to get started. Next year in late winter I will soil test and try to take all the right steps.

That’s how we planted this on the video. We just disced the ground and broadcasted the sun flowers that’s what I would plant for doves. If you can get them to grow pending deer don’t eat them down to the ground you’ll be good to go
@rbljackson
@rbljackson 8 ай бұрын
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors thanks...sorry but maybe I didnt word my quesiton well. The area im concerned with is after they mature and stalk out. Once they dry, can they be disked in with the ground hog max, or am i asking to much of that tool? Let them die off and disk them in after deer season early spring maybe? And thank you for your ability to reply to everyones questions. You do a great job of getting back to people! Very much appreciated.

Just bought 4lb bag of Whitetail Institute Imperial Clover for a small logging road. The plot is small (800) sq ft. I put out 120 lbs of lime. Broadcasting Sept 5. Is it alright to spread the entire 4lb bag of seed? Don't want to choke out the seed I will fertilize with 6 24 24. Enjoy your work.
@johnmorley6663
@johnmorley6663 6 жыл бұрын
Robert McEachern don't plant the whole 4 pounds. Go by the directions for coverage. You will definitely choke it out. Frost seed with some that is left over
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
john morley what he said. That would be a lot of clover for that small Of a area. I would maybe do about 1 lb for that area.
@ubuntunewb
@ubuntunewb 6 жыл бұрын
Some thoughts on the Sunflower plot, would it have been better to broadcast through the sunflower plot then disk after? Or were you worried about burying the seed to deep? I thinking about how Dr. Grant Woods broadcast in the standing soybeans or his new buffalo system. I love the thought of using Sunflower and other big material as organic matter/compost. Oh also, if you want to get away from the Buck on Bag seeds, check out grandparayoutdoors.com (high quality seed for a proper price) or check out DeerBuilder.com, awesome reviews and experiments with seeds of all different locations.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
That’s some good options for sure thank you. Discing in the dees prob would be been to deep. I could of prob just broadcasted them and then just ran the sunflowers over as well. Either way will work. Running them over and then discing I think will be better germination because some of the seeds I planted were on the larger size so I’ll have better soil to seed contact. If I was just doing clover I would say it will be ok just to broadcast
@anthonythorp7291
@anthonythorp7291 5 жыл бұрын
I broadcast sunflower seeds and roll them in. Works good but after second year deer learned they're food and eat them all when they're 4 to 6 inches tall. Same with soybeans.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
That works to. I wasn’t to worried about them eating them. If they do great it’s good food for them. If not it’s a good view.
