An unexpected result from familiar territory. A few new faces came along for the ride too.

It’s an awesome area! It was the home of my first back country hunt, great place to take a few rookies to warm them into the hunting game! Luck was on our side that day!!!

Was it enough teasing for ya, Greig? Those hills are only getting bigger and bigger.
@greigcaigou59912 жыл бұрын
@@chasingpeaks yeah you elivered on the "teaser" . . . nah, those hills are easy enough, and the more I do down at the bottom of the south the smaller the top of the south looks!!

@@greigcaigou5991 positive outlook! Even Fiordland alpine scrub compares closely to the Leatham wilding pines…

Always aiming to share experiences with new and keen people. A shame the lads weren’t all able to get behind the rifle. But I’m sure they’ll be more pumped when they do.

An area which consistently produces poor heads can occasionally produce an amazing head, as your experience has shown. Well done.

Cheers Gregory! Eventually hard yards pay off eh!! Thanks for watching.

I just don't understand why you didn't cape such a fantastic, hard earnt trophy.
@chasingpeaks Жыл бұрын
Very good and valid concern. It was after much deliberation that we made the decision not to. It is a great animal and one unlikely to better, from that region. However, once we do find the ‘right’ Red Stag for a shoulder mount he will, well and truly, be a great specimen. Also, it keeps that challenge and drive alive.

Cool video guys. What cal rifles are you using?
@chasingpeaks2 жыл бұрын
The Browning that shot the stag is a .280. The Tikka is chambered in .308. 🤙
@jasonstevens57022 жыл бұрын
Awesome hunt boys, the hard yards paid off. Nothing like that feeling. What rifle and caliber did you use on the deer?
@chasingpeaks2 жыл бұрын
Certainly feels good to get one on the deck. It’s a Xbolt White Gold chambered in .280REM

Nice country. But shame about all the radiata, this is very much how most of our foot hill country is going to look in the next two generations. As hunters we should be vocal about the damage to this country it causes.
@chasingpeaks6 ай бұрын
Couldn’t agree more! Definitely do our fair share of talking about it. Plus, always pull out a few hundred as you go (Not that it helps much).
@livetoofish2 жыл бұрын
Top head for that area, few genes coming though from the east of there maybe. Man those pines are getting bad.
@chasingpeaks2 жыл бұрын
Most likely some Introduced genes. Yea man, those valleys are beyond help. Just need to keep them contained eh.
@livetoofish2 жыл бұрын
Still a good chance that its not decended from introduced genes looking at its style. A massive 18 was shot in the next valley over in the early 70's from a helicopter. That long deceased pilot operated in the Rakaia country mostly yet the one from that country was the best they shot out of the helicopter. Bit of history for you..
@chasingpeaks2 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome JG. Would there be any photos of it? Would be awesome to see. Might be a far fetched request as I suppose there wasn’t anything like Facebook or instagram to share photos in the 70’s ha. Cheers mate
@livetoofish2 жыл бұрын
No sorry no photo. I've always wanted to see what it was like as well. The pilots old shooter told me about it.
