So This Is My Why

Күн бұрын

“When people say it’s ok, I don’t need a family, I don’t need a partner, I say bullshit.”
Woon Tai Ho is most known for being the founder of Channel News Asia & author of prolific books like the trilogy by George Yeo (Singapore’s former foreign minister).
But has the success been worth it?
What are some of his biggest regrets in life?
In Part 1 (watch here: • When CNA started, it w... ), we explored all of his big career achievements and the challenges that came with it, including being summoned by China to answer for their coverage of Falun Gong.
But today, we cover something very different.
Deeper.
More personal.
Starting with Tai Ho’s major pivot from broadcasting to author.
Because nowadays, it’s common to make career pivots. It’s hard enough when it’s just jumping from one company to the next in the same industry, but Tai Ho has made that huge jump so…
❓ How did he do it?
❓ How does he think about the ‘Second Act’ of his career?
❓ How should people plan for their own Second, Third or even Fourth Act, especially when it comes to retirement?
And is there such a thing as living for too long and just ‘waiting to die’?
We also talk about some of his deepest regrets, his relationship with success and thoughts on relationships.
His advice to people: Go marry, have kids, then go back to your career.
We don’t have to be that woke. 😅
Do you agree?
Let’s start listening!
Highlights:
0:00 Becoming an accidental biographer
2:51 Secret sauce to George Yeo
4:47 Transparency over Lee Kuan Yew
6:17 Is it a blessing or curse to live until age 102?
12:11 What does the future look like for me?
12:42 Has the success been worth it?
17:25 Tai Ho’s biggest regret
18:27 Relationship with his twin brother
21:01 Main advice for listeners
22:47 How do you plan for the Secret Act in your career?
25:43 Tai Ho’s bunnies
28:54 Have you found your why?
29:52 What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
30:07 What do you think are the most important qualities of a successful person?

George Yeo did not resign from politics. He was forced to retire. He became better off going to the private sector. He is well taken care off. No need to worry for him.

It is true that on retirement everyone should have something challenging and meaningful to engage such as an active hobby or second career. For me as an artist at 76 years old I paint everyday and time passes without a boring moment. I am glad that I had developed a second interest when I was young and working.

Longevity is a blessing if one is relatively healthy. Hence before you reach old age, be familiar with old age issues and ask yourself how you are going to overcome these issues when they become your issues. In this way you try to ensure your old age is an old age worth living.

This is such a humble and authentic view of you and your heart and passions Woon Tai Ho. To know you in so many different settings and subjects and in each you bring a special passion and perspective teasing out the things we all never knew and need to know. You help bring out what makes incredible people so special and why we need their insights. Art, Politics, Social & Society there is no subject which you cannot enlighten us in new and fresh ways that is uniquely "Woon Tai Ho" (I hope a new adjective). All blessings to you my friend! Your wooden rabbit friend. Lets return to Myanmar together

Seeing him for the first time though more familiar with his book "Musings", I love Woon Tai's down-to-earth way of looking at life and aging. He observed rightly that Yip Yew Chong's career is peaking in his middle years: indeed talent has no age. (I met Yip before he became famous, doing a wall mural in Chinatown during lunchtime on a very hot afternoon!)

This dude seems to be going thru an existential crisis. I was expecting an inspirational view of life but his talk seems to be peppered with regrets and missed opportunities. C'mon, you're only 60+, not 80 or 90 yo. Life is full of possibilities ahead and never look back. Just keep going and find your love, your true calling. It doesn't matter at what age you discover that, but once you find that, love it to bits !

Thank you for this interview, he is Frank and open in his conversation. Therefore the points he mentioned are worth looking into. When he mentioned George yeo, I recalled my opinion of this gentlemen, a rare gem, who could have make it to a higher position in politics in Singapore that is my full confidence in this man. In addition, he is still well respected in the political arena in the world. It is great loss to the people of Singapore when he had decided to leave Singapore politics on a permanent basis. Should he have come back at any earlier point of time, he would definitely succeeded. My salutations to him equal to Lky.

@louis - I think perhaps we can view such things ("success in life") with circumspection : it's a loss to Singapore but a gain to the world. Like they say, "a door closes but another door opens" - it may very well be a better path, "a blessing in disguise" ?

I'm 74. Obviously, I often ponder the future and reflect on the past. I was born in Malacca, Malaysia, studied uni in Wellington, New Zealand, and married a kiwi. Moved to Australia to join my extended family who migrated there from Malaysia. So, I have lived an interesting life. Regrets? Of course! Reflective joy? YES! Looking forward to my 3rd Act with a new lady in the Philippines. If you know Filipino culture, you immediately gain a new family. My mission is to assist kids in disadvantaged families with their health and education (in its broadest sense). Still have much motivation to make the most of Life. All the best to all of us. 🎉💖👍

I think most people associate with single hood when you are in your 40s or later as being picky. But it is not really the main reason for all. Also since he is still able to find a partner, he should focus on cherishing the current one and look forward. Life is a learning journey, whatever decision you make at any point in time can be a good lesson for later. He already has achieved many milestones and has been in a privileged position before. That is quite good already.

I understand "pressure". But paying taxes to police and say "you have to work like a dog" is the same as saying you pay price to engage a maid but wash everything yourself, cook everything, maid does nothing. Think about statement "because of pressures, we are like dogs" so, why some are not dogs? Others with horrendous fraction of our gdp, have running water, clean air? Every item "paid for" comes with an item in exchange. Think about the price. And dont be sheep and just repeat "no choice, external pressure". Between cancer or no cancer the choice is always "choose no cancer" there is a choice. Just stop parroting. Open real eyes. See. Be adult. Not child.

One side he stresses on the importance of a married life and yet he mentioned he has a partner . So how come not a wife instead ? If you have not even experience a normal marriage life, please don’t try to offer your views on ageing thru that perspective. When a person chooses to be single, you’ll just have to acknowledge the fact that the possibility to be alone and die alone is definitely inevitable. Writing and pondering on such issues only satisfies your own thoughts but it does not affect much to the majority except giving them depressing thoughts. You are filthy rich enough to hire caregivers so count your blessings and move on in life with your partner be it a straight one or otherwise.

I just checked out that this is the founder of CNA. I now know why CNA is pro-USA and Europe. I skip CNA most of the time. The founder is profit driven and has no spiritual roots even after 60 years. You cannot be happy if you do not probe your innate desires and fulfill them. In short, you do not know what you personally want, and busy over what you do not personally want. Sporeans are blessed with long life, and have access to all the best lives of the world on their fingertips, on the internet. An intelligent man can probe his innate desires with the wisdom of Chinese and European sages, finding one that resonates with you. Ten years to age 80 is a long time to study the wise experiences of the sages of China, India and Europe.

What is this guy talking about ? Billions of human being come and go since time immemorial. As such any person is only one in the billions at any time regardless who one is. So why ponder so much about life ? Life is just a passage of time. Every day, if you are able to wake up to function, that is to breathe, to eat, to walk, to feel, to have sex, to see, to talk, to work, to sleep, etc, etc as a human being, just do it and let time brings you to death by every second. And in your daily functioning, just enjoy your life and careless how other people live their life. If this guy is already 65 year old and still worrying and not understanding about the complexities of life, then I think he has been living a very meaningless life.

Buddha would say otherwise. The feeling of loneliness arises because people believe in the existence of a "self" within them, leading their minds to constantly seek entertainment. Relationships can also be harmful to children; consider the high divorce rate as evidence that marriages are not necessarily a solution to one's life.
