Ever since her dirt debut in 2018, my girlfriend Alexis and I have been searching for the perfect all around bike for her. From the CRF230L, to the CRF150RB, the KX100, and ultimately the step up to her full size KTM 250XCW which she fell in love with. At 5'0" flat being vertically challenged is an understatement and off-road Enduro riding is already challenging enough, let alone not being able to touch the ground in most situations.
Full size motorcycles can only be modified so much until you completely throw off the geometry, and after some intense single track riding in Arizona, we were at yet another fork in the road. Invest the $1,000 + in a proper suspension setup and still struggle to touch, or find something smaller and compromise performance. Thankfully by sheer luck, at the AMA vintage motorcycle days event we came across the perfect solution.
It’s much easier to describe what the Beta Xtrainer isn’t than what it is. It isn’t a trials bike. It isn’t a race bike. It isn’t a motocrosser, hill-climber or adventure bike. What does that leave? Much, much more than you ever imagined. The Beta Xtrainer has an electric-start two-stroke motor that’s tuned like a trials bike for low-end power. It has a downsized conventional chassis but with soft suspension and a low seat height. It was originally conceived as an entry-level trail bike, but it’s been adopted by experienced off-road veterans and even pro motocrossers. It turns out that it’s universally appealing as a cross trainer for anyone wanting to build off-road skills at any level.
Here is our initial thoughts on the 2021 Beta Xtrainer.

I'm really frustrated at the manufacturers for not making smaller bikes. I'm 6'1", and even I don't like 37 inch seat heights. She looks great on that bike, and it makes me happy that she finally found it.

Agreed. I'm 6' with a 35" leg and I bought a 400sm because I could flat foot it. Now that I am off roading more, the 21-18 rims I put on make the bike 2 inches taller, and I have to tip toe the thing. I feel like a KLX 230s or a tt250 would be a way better learner dirt bike for most riders simply because of the ability to touch ground. Anyone tried either of those?

What is generally available in performance bikes is basically two choices size wise, an example would be CRF150RB vs CRF250R You can have a tiny 51'' wheelbase or a 58'' wheelbase, and frames to match , so one is too small for many of us and the other too large. They refuse to offer us a performance bike with a 54'' + - wheelbase, something in between the tiny and huge framed bikes, with a curb weight of 200lbs, and a seat height around 34'' , 35'' , and 35-40 hp, not 12hp lol.

I will be shocked if she doesn't absolutely love the Beta. The chassis geometry being a little closer to a trials bike allows so much confidence in technical terrain combined with beautiful throttle control and of course the 300 2 stroke bottom end grunt makes for a nearly perfect machine to learn and progress on for smaller riders.

Drop the spring rates to her weight and she will gain another 1/2 of clearance. My wife did. They are pretty rich out of factory so lean the jetting out a little and it starts to come alive in the mid low/mid. Way less hesitation.

I've been waiting for her to get an X-trainer, makes perfect sense. The suspension isn't as good as the RR, but it's more than enough for her, shit, more than enough for most people honestly! You can also turn that allen bolt out to change the power valve delivery (or screw it in to lessen the hit). I also love the OI, I've never had a problem with it, keep it on there. So nice to just dump gas in and rip. Should be a nice bike I think! Happy for her!

@@davet3947 I probably should have got one too since I'm only 5'8" as well, but wanted the 300RR with the better suspension, I can still get my toes on the ground, but any weird terrain and it's tough for sure. I drive my SxS more then the Beta now, it basically just collects dust, but I do like to bust it out from time to time to practice balance maneuvers and stuff like that. Still a fun bike.

I am 5’5” with a 30” inseam & the greatest investment I made to my 2005 KTM EXC 500, that I purchased new in 2005, was to have the suspension lowered by 3” both forks & shock was the addition of lowering shims, all of which are reversible. The original seat height of 37” just did not work for me. Now with the 34” seat height I can touch the ground with both feet with the ball of each foot. My suspension tuner, trained & certified by Race Tech suspension, changed the springs for my weight & adjusted the compression/rebound for my riding abilities. No stock bike suspension is ever going to work for you like custom suspension. It should be the main modification done to any bike you ride. Once you ride a bike set up for you & your needs I can say it will make you a better rider. You can always gain skill which helps, but suspension made for your needs is guaranteed to help make you happier when you ride!!!

Can you get into a little more detail please . We’re about the same height and I’m thinking of picking up a 500 next summer . Big thanks 🙏
@edwinarmstrong9175
@edwinarmstrong9175 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThatsMyBully according to the Race Tech suspension tuner who did it all they do is add lowering shims. He should them to me & the looked like a washer to me. You can lower by the amount he installed. They can lower both ends up to 3” or less without hurting the suspension & when they take it into account as they adjust all settings for your custom needs to make the bike suspension work for you. Now if you need it lower than 3” he also said the suspension parts can be cut to go lower but after being cut it is not reversible. So I only did 3” just in case I decided to go back to the original height. By lowering internally the stock rideability stays the same, so cuts trails as the engineers intended it, which KTM does well with the 500’s. I hope this helps you. Just make sure you get a reputable suspension tuner. It takes good training to have someone to set it up properly for your needs. Good luck!

Lowering suspension changes the handling of the bike in bad ways. For small children it can help gain confidence. For an adult not good.
@edwinarmstrong9175
@edwinarmstrong9175 2 жыл бұрын
@@olliechristopher467 sorry you believe that because the Race Tech suspension guy that said they did it with Ricky Carmichael & because both ends are lowered the same rideing characteristics stay the same. The handling problems start when people add lowering links. That changes the dynamics of the suspension completely. When done internally all you lose is height. If your doing 30’ jumps that’s a major loss in travel which will cause bottoming if the springs aren’t added which they did in Ricky Carmichael’s bike to make the suspension work for him & he’s not the only rider professionally that does these suspension adjustments.
@olliechristopher467
@olliechristopher467 2 жыл бұрын
@@edwinarmstrong9175 Rickys bike was way more than just suspension. His suspension, chassis and frame modifications cost more than you can even imagine. It was a whole custom build factory bike. By lowering suspension components you lose ground clearance and the bike will never handle as good as stock geometry.

Not just girls, I'm 55, 5ft6in Australian, same problem power no issue biggest bike a VFR750 I used to wheelie that. I haven't had a dirt bike since the 80s for that reason, Yamaha 100 LT2 2 Stroke, DT250 2 Stroke air cooled a Kawasaki KL250 4 Stroke not choked up with anti pollution gear like the new bikes 135 kmh rain, hail or shine. Then they started making them too high for me. So I changed to big road bikes, my arms felt 6 ft longer till I got used to the hard acceleration. Back then my first bike bike was a XS750 Triple shaft drive. Bulletproof bike. I loved 2 strokes back then, power wise back then they would bury a 4 Stroke the same size.

I've been playing this game all my life. This is just another step. The machine I've fully settled on is the CRF150RB (big wheel), which you tried, but for some odd reason rejected. I don't understand that rejection. It has power everywhere, fits better than a full-size bike with 18"/21" wheels that someone tried to make smaller, and very important: when you fall and hafta move the bike around, it's SO much lighter. It's the machine I waited 30 years to find. I'm humbly betting that after a while, you'll come back to it. I did.

I think you hit on it perfectly - You have to be comfortable and if you need to be able to flat foot then so be it. You ride better when your confidence is high, so yes you have to give different bike a try, but go with what make you 100% comfortable and confident. Just a shame to loose money for such a short period of time - selling the 350's only after a few months

The fork springs are probably stock length (or should be). Double check that, because if anybody wants to change spring rates, they would have to have a special spring if KTM does not provide the shorter spring rates. I am sure they modified the fork to use the standard length spring, instead of making a bunch more springs that they might never use. on my YZ250 SSS forks, it was as easy as machining another groove on the OD of a aluminum tube.

I can't wait for the next few videos of riding new bike. As a short rider not great options on bike from factory. I'm 5.4 and riding wr250r lowered 2 inches with my weight and I probably fall just as much as she does off road. If I could buy a new 300 2stroke with lower seat height from factory it would be done deal and parked in my garage. But most are 36-37 seat height. Xtrainer stock is 35.8'' which is better but still high and loose suspension quality. I live in pnw and so many single track trails. I would like to have single track trail bike down the road but seat hight is big factor for me.

Consider swapping out that 140/80r18 for a 120/80r18 to help getting more toes to touch. Add Tubliss when you do it to keep the traction even though the tire is 1.25" shorter.

YES FINALLY! Man this is my dream enduro. Especially because of the relatively long maintenance interval. Here in Germany there are close to no options to ride Offroad, it's illegal almost everywhere. With the low maintenance interval of 1000km I would be able to get a plate and just take it to the nearby enduro parks or mx tracks

I have the 2018 XT. The OI left me stranded, so I rage sold it, but I missed it so much, I just bought it back. I'm gong to do the OI Delete. (it turned out to be a bad TPS sensor for the injector pump. It was replaced, but now it is showing as failed again) Look at the Seat Concepts Low Seat option. It made a big difference for me as a short rider.

Congrats! It totally is. I’m 5’6” and it’s the only full size dirt bike I feel like an actual adult on lol. Once you get the suspension sorted (there are multiple kits out there), it can be a great all around trail/enduro bike too. Enjoy! 👍🏾

What’s wrong with the suspension? How much are these new? Are they readily available?
@urbanadventurer5
@urbanadventurer5 2 жыл бұрын
@@airadaimagery692 you can probably find out a lot of these answers just by searching for Xtrainer review or googling for info on the bike’s suspension, but it is basically a pretty soft trials type suspension that is fine for riding slow, smaller lightweight riders, and/or hard enduro/trials like skill building. It is typically not most people’s favorite for riding fast, especially bigger riders, but that’s a subjective thing. Yes, the suspension kits are readily available if you search and you can even order a kit directly from Beta.

Great bike for smaller riders .one of the shorter girls I ride with goes up hard enduro hills with ease great power delivery gave her so much more confidence. Don't make it to snappy it will make you struggle on technical trail .just skid plate pipe gaurd and ride and you will improve your skills fast

As a TE150i rider, the only thing I would like more is the lower seat height of the BETA X Trainer, and i am a sucker for plush suspension too ..... maybe one day X Trainer - and a LOT cheaper than Husq in Australia

HA! Common sense finally prevails. Same reason I bought the Xtrainer. Short dude with a 28" inseam. And I lowered mine 2.5" more in back (link + preload), then 1.5" more in front (1" riser + raised fork legs in triple tree). Still tough to flat-foot, but waay less dumps lol. Enjoy!

The 350’s (my experience is with a 2022 EXC-F) only have a 6mm brembo clutch master cylinder. Combined with 4strokes are hard to run down low in general it makes hard and technical riding much more difficult. Of course you can upgrade to a bigger master but there expensive and the 6mm you can’t help even with midwest mountain engineering lever… I feel it makes the 6mm harder to pull… my buddy’s have Beta 300’s and they are absolute tanks. Good choice. I lowered my 350 2inches….

I have a 2019 YZ250, even taller. It is not too hard to lower the suspension a bit, and you can have your seat lowered by any upholstery shop. I made a mistake when I did mine though a small one. I guessed at how much I wanted to lower it, and ended up a bit short. (1" off the seat and .75 off the suspenders). I sat on the bike with some magazines stacked up under me feet equally to the height I want, then lower the bike that much. Make sure you have the right springs for your weight in the suspension, and the tries are up to pressure for the best measurement. I would suggest who I think are the best guys around for suspension work, "Race Tech" and "Enzo". For the seat, a buddy of mine told me about this gal, and she did a wonderful job for $80.00, (but I paid her $100.00). All I did was make a cardboard example of the seat shape I wanted with one piece. From one side of the seat, I made the bottom of the seat flush with the bottom the cardboard, the front edge of the seat flush, so she could orient the cardboard well and cut off the top what I wanted (top of the cardboard), and she put the stock seat cover back on. JB Sport Trim (JBsporttrim.com) 616-994-4767 Michigan. Her name is Nichole. If you drop 1" off the seat and 1" off the suspension,---that is a lot.

Pretty good on the balance drills. I would try going even slower, use the front brake , rear brake and throw in some clutch slippage like a trials rider. It's pretty nice to be able to come to a stop and not have to worry about putting your foot down , or to be able to take off from a dead stop with both feet on the pegs, pop a wheelie in half a bike length or less....looking forward to some trail footage.
