one of the silliest parts of Framework is that their customers believe in their mission so much that they won't buy the product immediately

You don't actually have to spend a ton. I bought their "factory seconds" refurb of 11th gen intel. It's actually cheap for what you get. Granted, I was transfering ram and m.2 drive. But still. And i haven't bought any adaptors yet...

@@76mmGMCNot everybody needs to upgrade that frequently. I just ordered a 13 this week but only because my Haswell chip Dell that I bought used is still running Win 8.1 and I don’t want to bother with the workaround install for an unsupported cpu. It actually still worked fine, just wouldn’t install new software right and no more updates. 🤷‍♂️ The point you make about, essentially, putting your money where your mouth is, is why I ultimately bought one. My phone does what I need or I could borrow my wife’s laptop for the other .5% of the time. If I hadn’t migrated to iOS right before Samsung and Google announced 7 year security support, I’d probably have gotten a Lapdock and just run Dex. As a counterpoint, I’d bring up that since the stated purpose, on at least some level, of Framework is to reduce waste by allowing user repair and upgradability, you’ve kind of hit the nail on the head. I suspect that some of Framework’s biggest headwinds, apart from initial adoption, will be their self stated goal of working against planned obsolescence. Will there be new, fancy cases? Colors? The option for exotic materials? What if something comes along that’s industry disrupting but won’t integrate well with some core aspect of their upgradable design? 🤷‍♂️ Sorry, point and counterpoint discussions regarding the actual application of industry and design are exciting for me, you found my kink. Next chapter of the book is your turn. 🤣

For me those are Framework, Prusa3D and Valve at the moment. (Un)fortunately my ageing ThinkPad e585 is still holding up great, original battery and all, so out of those 3 I have not yet 'thrown money' at Framework yet. Which I will once said machine needs replacement or perhaps as an upgrade to my desktop, with a Framework 16 based build. This only if I find a good purpose for my old PC, which I plan to place in a DIY racing rig once I have the budget for it. A friend at my studies has a Framework 13, initially I hated the keyboard but I don't mind it now, the hardware is really cool and well-built.

For that, you need an internal USB hub. And then loose one or more of USB 3/4 speeds, type C alt modes, or PD charging. There is no fitting all-in one chip available that would work. Especially with when expecting to charge the FW 16 with 180-240W.

It's UHS-II compatible. That alone is worth it. True UHS-II speeds over USB4 in the world's TIGHTEST mechanical package, without overheating. If you think that's "simple", you don't understand how hard manufacturing is. The design is easy enough, but to manufacture it reliably enough for mass production as a first party accessory takes WAY more time. This isn't a hobbyist hack. There are FCC and UL requirements that have to be satisfied here, too.
