I think the part of the episode that hits hardest for me is when Frieren starts remembering her time adventuring with Himmel, and the dirt is being shoveled on his coffin. Each dirt pile hitting the lid is like, "Too late", "Too late", "Too late".

Eh most shows have badly written female/male chracters just like most animes have them so I think it's a bit unfair to compare one of the best shows in anime to any standard TV show. You can even compare Frieren to most animes and it would still have better female characters than 95% of them. We still have fantastic female characters example Godless, Better Call Saul, Yellowjackets, The Diplomat, Fleabag. Tell me if you need more examples @@chernoalphaspunch

@@chernoalphaspunch Bruh so many people say stupid shit like this when anime literally has an entire (popular) subgenre which romanticizes fantasy "waifu" slavery. Shows with compelling, well written, non-objectified, strong/autonomous female protagonists like Frieren and Apothecary Diaries are the exception rather than the rule in anime, and it is so bizarre how so many have deluded themselves into thinking that an industry infamously rife with widespread sexism, misogyny, and pedophilia, where flashing underage girls panties is not just accepted but is a common and routine genre staple, is somehow some bastion of compelling female character writing.

The names of characters and places are mostly German words and in a wide sense they fit to them. Frieren - to be cold or freezing Himmel - heaven or sky (a lot of times the anime shows the sky when Frieren talks about Himmel) Heiter - cheerful Eisen - iron Fern - distant Flamme - flame You can look up almost every name in this show and translate it to English.

It’s not that Himmel aged badly, but that Heiter aged well. It was established at the beginning of the episode that Heiter looked the same as he ever did, even after they traveled together for 10 years. And then, fifty years later, he’s still the one who looks the same as he ever did. He looked older than he was when he was young, so now that he’s old, it makes sense he would look younger. Because he always looks the same. I don’t know why nobody catches this.

I assume it has something todo with him being a priest as in quite a few stories it seems being connected to a god/goddess or generally holy power can prevent curses and illness to some degree and sometimes that also results in a longer. Of course even that is not even close to dwarfs or elfs.

8:43 people assume that Himmel aged "bad" due to the horn exuding evil aura that he's been keeping all this time! Interesting theory I think, since even Frieren doesn't know if the aura has any effects

well that not the case the reason he grew old and hieter was not as old as himmel is because although it may not look like it but himmel is way older than hieter altleat 15-20 years old it wasn't said directly but in one of the ep if you see how himmel refers hieter it is very clear of their age difference (can't do in detail cause it will be spoiler)

02:17 I'm re-watching this show and am once again amazed by the details. In this scene, when Himmel is talking, Himmel's eyes are on Frieren and we can see her on screen. But when Frieren is talking, her eyes are not on Himmel, and we don't see him on screen. I won't go into detail because it would be a spoiler, but it's a nice detail.

My grandfather passed away this past week, and something about the way frieren is written just really resonates with me. I have a feeling the author may have had a similar experience with losing someone close to them. My grandfather really was my hero. He even went on a journey across the world as a teenager. Hundreds of people came to his wake. I never really appreciated the significance of the traditions he carried on to our family until he died. This concept of upholding tradition is even touched on in the anime.

All kidding aside, one of the best reasons why this show is so good is that the reason it’s overblown with hype is BECAUSE it’s so satisfying to watch. The elves in this seem to be like the ones in Lord of the Rings, they can potentially be killed but they never get old. Also all the time stamps in this show are counting from Himmel's death.

Fans of the manga have told me, in order to better understand the age of elves in this series, every 100 years equates to 1 year for an elf.

@@joenull5945 not really tbh. Elves in this really might be ageless rather than 100 years per 1 elf year, though it might be true in regards to how they feel time pass, but their aging is a whole different beast to discuss. Because its implied that some elves are past 10 millennia old.

Frieren is 100% LOTR style high fantasy. Frieren and the other elves you meet also are the most in line with Tolkien's elves of any recent fiction, arguably even more like his elves than the ones in the recent Amazon series.

My grandfather (father to my mother) died when I was 14. I loved him very much, but he lived on a city far away from mine, so I would only see him on new years eve and we'd stay at his home (he lived with my grandmother) for about a week around then. When my mother told me he died, I couldn't cry either. I had many good times with him, spent many new years together and talked a lot. I didn't felt that I would miss him, I felt that I had "enough grampa" for all that a kid could ask for. I was sad and I felt empty, but not enough to cry. It only hit me some days later, when I was cleaning my room and I saw a board game in my closet which he gave me on Christmas a couple years before. I cried a lot then, and some times after, when remembering him. Not because of missing him but to the realization of how much he meant to me. He was the best man I ever met.

I cried a lot from this anime. The storytelling is amazing, it doesn't have grand fight scenes or epic plot twists, but it easily made probably my top 10 fave anime. It was so nostalgic and makes you feel like we need to enjoy our journey in life.

Himmel’s VA, btw, voiced Genya Shinazugawa from Demon Slayer, and Frieren’s VA voiced Anya Forger from Spy Family, Hinatsuru (the mature, ponytailed wife of Uzui Tengen) from Demon Slayer, Diva/Vivy from Vivy Flourite’s Song, Chise from Ancient Magus Bride, Sajuna (Juju-sama) from My Dress Up Darling, and Concubine Gyokuyo from Apothecary Diaries, among many others. The names in Frieren are German. Frieren means something like “freezing cold,” Himmel means “blue sky / Heaven” (watch for all the scenes of the blue sky), and Fern means “distant.”

My theory is that the shadow dragon horn was slowly sapping away Himmel’s lifespan which is why he aged faster

Just so you know, mimics have been around WAY longer than Dark Souls. They first appeared in Dungeons & Dragons back in 1977. Also, there's no overhyping Frieren. It's just that good. In most modern fantasy (most of which is inspired by Lord of the Rings), elves usually are extremely long-lived, as in thousands of years (they were immortal in LOTR unless killed in battle). Also, dwarves usually are longer-lived than humans, typically depicted as living 200-300 years.

Assuming Himmel and Heiter were in their 20s when they started the journey, 30s when they returned, plus 50 would put Himmel in his 80s when he died, and an additional 20 would put Heiter in his 100s.

You thought there was a time skip for the 50-years gap between the era-meteor-shower, but you actually just experience what a mere 50 years in Frieren's perspective. This anime does quite a few story-telling visually instead of verbally. Next time you thought there is a time skip again, no, it's once again that's how Frieren felt.

You two NEED to continue this show. You might think you know what kind of show it is but trust me ….you don’t lol. This is an absolute work of art, the pacing, the character writing, the animation and yes….THE BATTLES are all top of the class. Also just a pro tip, do not under any circumstances speak ill of Himmel in Frierens presence. There are consequences for those actions Edit: also you should notice that once Himmel passes away each episode/new area/time starts with showing how long it’s been since his death. That’s Frierens perspective, he had such an impact on her she now gauges time based off of his death. Really important detail moving forward

Dwarves live about 300 years and elves live thousands of years they age so slowly and once they get to a certain age they practically stop aging at all.
