Warm winter sun greets the Millfield First XV as they arrive at Wellington College to kick off their Schools Championship campaign. Despite a rocky start to their 2022 season, Rugby Director John Mallett prepares the team for the upcoming St Joseph's National Schools Festival as the team looks to defend its title from the previous year. Returning First XVer Ioan Emanuel warns the youthful squad of the pitfalls of the two day tournament, while school life continues for the students, as academics and sport blend seamlessly into a busy Millfield Term. #TheSeason10 #Millfield

@user-bs7cq8kw8j are the schools fee paying? Just wondering. The reason for the league split came down to elitism, and there’s still only a small area in the north dominated by rugby league, plenty of local clubs in lancs and Manchester and Yorkshire just don’t receive funding because there isn’t any. With funding comes growth, but the RFU is happy with its current audience

Great episode as per. Always the same though, far too much insight into the private school demographic, why isn’t there a drive to shed light on the other 93% of general population that attended state schools. Our free half term camps for state educated children are a small statement to drive change ⚡️

I agree, a series demonstrating the struggle faced by state schools, in gathering adequate budget to put on a programme at all, and how limiting factors such as poor facilities, equipment, multi sport coaches, low socio economic status of students and their families, effect running such a programme.

As a South African I am surprised at the lack of spectators. Here The two top schools playing each other will be watched by 30 thousand people and of course both schools doing their school chant. We have international schools tournaments in SA, would be nice to these 2 top schools come play. We have had a number of English schools out in recent years together with NZ schools and U18 teams from Italy and Argentina (they don’t have schools rugby so they selected a team from clubs to play our schools) I think our school boys are bigger than these guys. We eat a lot of meat.

School rugby in Britain doesn't attract anywhere near the intrest that South African schools attract. Most school games will attract a few parents perhaps and some pupils . Even the larger tournaments are not well attended. Rugby isn't a big sport in the UK and that's reflected in how few schools play it. I don't know about how big school boys are. Although I did notice that Baby Boks in the U20 rwc were not noticeable larger. Mind you compared to the French side most teams looked small.

It`s sad that money has infiltrated sport and junior level. I reckon if you took a poll of all professional rugby players from the home Nations, 80% plus would have gone through fee paying schools. The exception would be in Wales as it`s a working class sport here but a fair few of our boys with affluent families go over the boarder to these schools/colleges. As a 16 year old promising and talented player from a working class family, you have to go out and earn a living at 16 and 17. If your parents are worth a few quid, there isn`t that pressure. Just look at the Irish/Leinster/Dublin system.

As an American that played rugby in college in the late 90s/2000s I love this -- BUT -- how easy would it be to recruit with these facilities? We literally did sweeps of our pitch pre game to get glass/batteries/random stuff off of the pitch. Moderately jealous.

So far, what I am hearing from the coaches speaking to the players is "Get up for the game, etc etc, Morale angle." "Spartans, what is your profession?" That morale boost can work for players who are fully trained, and they just need to be encouraged. There is no way any of those teenagers believe they are better now than they would be when they are 30. Instead of getting the boys a morale boost, I would give them an intelligence boost.
@xc3ptiona1
@xc3ptiona1 2 ай бұрын
I would say to the boys "When you are out on the paddock, before kick-off, what is important to you?" You don't want to embarrass yourself? You don't want to let down your mates? You don't want to let down the coaching staff? Let's be real, you are boys, and you have to learn. Instead of trying to be the best now, let's all agree that you are learning, and let's play a style of rugby where you can learn. The most fun I ever had is when I was trying out new moves. Obviously if everyone plays risky, then we may lose games we should win, so my job as a coach is to find a way to let ppl try new moves in a structure that still wins the game. Who tf wants to get up in the morning and come play for me boys!?

(Don't stifle the boys with boundaries, open them up to the idea that they are allowed to learn. It is your job as a coach to see who breaks what boundaries and put them in a position where they can do that and still help to win the game. Coaches' jobs are dependent on the results, so coaches are inclined to rev the boys up to win just 1 more game, but that is not how you create winning men out of boys.)
@xc3ptiona1

The coaches' job should be hard. If your coach is not doing their job for the team, then I want to inspire the players to do the job for themselves.

‘Millfield is diverse’ hmm, got nothing against private schools as long as the kids realise how privileged they are, at the end of the day without money a lot of these things/opportunities wouldn’t be there, who’s going to pay for the top class facilities/coaches wages/videographer etc? State schools have to budget more because they have less money, and they are free to attend. However, don’t start talking rubbish about being diverse, this is a very select group of kids from the social and economic elite, no matter what nationality they are from, I would argue two rich people from different countries would have more in common than a poor and a rich person from the same country
