$7000 dollars for a 100 piece first aid kit is extremely delusional. Our British military trauma/bleed stop kits are nowhere near those prices. Celox from israel which is in many military first aid kits these days can be purchased for under €30 with shipping. A full military style kit can be purchased for under €400

In the early 60's, I apprenticed to a German blacksmith who had spent two years as a POW in one of these forest work camps. He had been a Hitler Jugen who was captured by the Soviets in the battle for Berlin. He was only 14 at the time, and because of his age, he was only sentenced to two years in the camps. Of the three hundred POWs who began their time with him, only a handful survived the two years. The big men died first because their diet wasn't enough to keep them going. The small, tough guys lived the longest. Most died fom suicide from eating poisonous plants or over work. They cut trees 364 days of the year, from sunup until sunset. Only Christmas were they were given a day off. After he was repatriated, the German government sent him to school for seven years to learn how tto be a metal worker. This is how he became a blacksmith.

The woods where I live are also training grounds for the army. We often used to go there and search for treasure. We mostly found used ammo and would re-assemble mg-belts and stuff. Once we found a used practice grenade, the bottom blown out. It said "Teargas" on the side, cool! 15 minutes later we were rolling on the ground, in agony, pouring water over our faces that were on fire! Great memories!

Interesting trip and location. I can understand how it would be frustrating just digging up all of those funnels again and again. If they were living in trenches I can't imagine they would have many personal items with them that could be found now that you could positively identify as belonging to a German POW. It might be interesting to map out the buildings on the topo map. -Leen Visser

I'd go back Lars, and map the place out. Cut some sticks, tie a flag on their ends, grab a long measuring tape, a clipboard and pencil. Go back, measure the size of the former bunker/huts, the distance between them, etc. Move outwards in a circular pattern from the center to catch outlying buildings. There SHOULD have been a small building at the RR's end for a station. The historical value of such a work would be pretty nice, I don't know if it's ever been done. As to the men living in bunkers vice huts, bunkers was absolutely the best way. They are insulated against the cold, require not as much material to heat in winter, and as long as they have decent drainage should be waterproof enough. The guards quarters will be separate, along with the camp commandants house. Just finding out if they even had a perimeter barbed wire fence will be interesting in itself.

I don't know about torque on this vehicle. Most likely not more than 90-100Nm. However, it has portal hubs and I rebuilt them all a few years ago. I changed the gearing in the hubs to 1:6 or 1:7, for more torque and less "top speed." I don't remember to be honest. The weight is only 850kg and it has very good ground clearance at +50cm. The short wheel base, ground clearance, light weight and the portal hubs, makes it go almost anywhere.

If I might suggest, find the administrator/guard dwellings. They were probably the only guys who were getting paid for this endeavor. It stands to reason that the prisoners probably didn’t have anything to loose. It’s reasonable to think that the officers/foremen more than likely had things that were “contraband” like alcohol. What was the pay for the Soviet soldiers back then? What might they have bartered between themselves? I know they weren’t being paid in silver.

The prisoners would have been stripped of everything when captured/surrendered. I see no point digging up cans opened with a chisel. Same at the burial site, even teeth with gold fillings would have been removed. After the war the soviet summer camp would be for the resin harvest, that would explain the food cans. I am sure there was a war time munitions factory making nitrocellulose-dynamite etc there, plenty wood, plenty water. And labour force for free.
