Well, we did it. We got a cow.
We knew we wanted a cow, we thought we would wait until spring, (when the house was finished!) but things didn't go that way. This cow was everything that we were looking for and she was local and we knew her past owners and they were looking to finishing up milking with the year... SO, we got ourselves a Jersey Cow.
Her name is Maggie, and while she's a little older than we had been looking for, she is a great first cow for us. She is trained on grass, a great milker and a great mother, she is gentle and sweet, and bred to a South Pole and due this summer! We are very happy to have her here as the newest member of our little homestead. She will provide milk for our family, protein for our pigs, cats and dogs, manure for our garden and love for our pasture. She really is a very important part to this whole puzzle.
Before she arrived we had to come up with a mobile shelter and milking stanchion. Since our intentions were to have her be mobile and moving around the property to new grass, we had to come up with something, and quick. Luckily, KZfaq saved the day and we mimicked Ben and Meg Hollar's design from the Hollar Homestead! The recently brought on a milk cow and build a mobile shelter. Ben worked for three days trying to get it just right before she arrived and... she didn't like it! Haha! Figures.
Well, we should have paid closer attention when we met Maggie and saw that she was being milked in a sort of chute. She had absolutely no interest in putting her head between two bars and being held there. Oh well - we improvised and quickly build her something she was more comfortable with. Now the task is learning how to milk her!
We're always learning!
Enjoy the show!

Gma Kathy here. ‘Course my favorite part was Maebel helping with construction, running like a gazelle, and dressing up Maliya to frolic through the grass. Maggie is a prize! How fascinating to see her acclimate. Truly impressed with mobile construction, Ben, and Brianne, as always I love how you bring the video together, in a mellow manner!

Goats, because of the way their digestion system works need lots of roughage so they love brambles and weedy country. If you can fence them in some brambles they will make short work of them. Have you thought out the cow thingy carefully, you will need lots of pasture and access to good quality hay, plus some lucern pellets to feed during milking, cows eat a lot of grass and drink heaps of water.

Hoping you haven't gotten too much snow. Congrats on the cow. And like the stanchion, few ideal solutions come in cookie cutter form for all situations, environments, farms, amd gardens.

Happy seeing that new things are happening for the family. I'm sure that in time you'll have all the kinks worked out obviously there's some planning going into all the things that you all are doing on the land and I'm sure that the list of things to do can at times seem a bit overwhelming but for each task try staying with one at a time and completing it to the best of abilities then move on to the next and then like any chores eventually everything thing else sort of just becomes a part of most days routine. No pressure Holt's I've come across several channels that I've personally had very high hopes for, and yours seems to be another one that l have very high hopes for and seeing the efforts that you have been putting forward along with the achievements that you have made over these last several months. I continue to have very high hopes for you on your Homestead. I'm encouraged for you by your enthusiasm for this life style. Just try pacing yourself taking, so too speak! One bit of the apple 🍎 at a time. Congratulations on your new Milk Cow and your choice on becoming a part of the growing homestead community. Peace ✌️🕊️ and blessings ☺️👌🙏

Those are some very short teets on that cow, do not envy that job twice a day! Might need to think about a milking machine, save the your back and her udder. ? Look into UdderlyEZ - for cows and Goats! :) Being self sufficent and building a family farm is - always Lots of work. You are off to a great start.

Have y’all read a book called one cow revolution (not sure if I got that correct) but from one cow you can feed your family and most life stock. Very good read. Good luck with the cow huge achievement and responsibilities. Your builds are fun to watch. Congratulations

Nicely done . Maybe if you shifted up the lower frame board at the back up a couple of inches there would be a bit less resistance and wear n tare on it as well when pulling.

Hopefully you aren't in the path of 10' snow drifts in the upcoming weather this week-end. May you not get hit too hard, thank goodness you've gotten some insulation and dry wall up, and I'm guessing you'll be greatful for the wood stove.

I’m thinking this is more of a milking stand like Justin Rhodes.
@GrowingUpHolt
@GrowingUpHolt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes- it is more of a milking stand that can be used to get them out of snow and rain. We hope to use the barn in the future for bad weather.
