We decided to share this video as a precaution to other travelers. It's so easy to get food poisoning while traveling, and we were lucky we didn't have to go to the hospital.
Luckily, we do have travel health insurance in case we ever do need medical attention. It's only $40 a month, so it's worth it to us for the piece of mind. The link is below in case you're interested in what we use.

Guys, I'm from the States, i've been going back to Myanmar for so many times, that food poisoning is not from the hotel, its that yogurt you had on the streets took about 2 days to kick in, trust me i had it. Don't blame the hotel.

Yoghurt doesn't sound safe to eat... But would it take 2 days before you feel food poisoning from that? Sounds too long. The yoghurt goes through your system in a couple hours.

I once had food poisoning for a short time and immediately after eating, that’s because they’re food poisoning was caused by bacteria, mine was an allergic reaction to a common toxin found in the food I ate which usually doesn’t cause anything

Sorry to hear that. I don't know exactly what did you eat on that day for the dinner. But most of the people saying that it was from the street food in Yangon. Actually I think before you arrived at that hotel you did visited to Mandalay and other places. So street food from Yangon is about 2 3 days ago. You can't get food poisoning from the food you ate many days ago. It may be from the food you ate in Mandalay. I'm not denying that Yangon street food is a bit dangerous for European stomach. Be careful of those soy sauce with garlic and other types of sauce. And also that yogurt is not a good choice for you guys that can cause you diarrhoea 😅. However thank you for the positive vibes upon us. Thank you for visiting Myanmar. Hopefully you guys come again in next holidays.

You are absolutely right. A good example, I am from Colombia but my girlfriend is English. Her stomach found it hard to cope with Colombian street food, she was sick, vomiting on certain things but I was fine. I think my stomach is much more resilient than hers, probably due to more exposure.

I know the feeling, living in Thailand I have had food problems three times in nine years. It was horrible, I had to spend most of the night in and out of the shower because of uncontrolled problems. It takes a few days to recover. One time was because of shell fish, which my Thai wife can eat, but as I found out, most farangs can’t.

I feel for you. Had a lovely three day adventure with food poisoning in Thailand. We actually wanted some western food one night and I had an Italian sausage. I can say it is the most sick I have ever been, but I was prepared for it since it’s very common especially in lots of Asian countries for foreigners. Local pharmacy had the meds I needed and helped heal me up. Next time just go to a pharmacy and as soon as you say food poisoning they will hook you up. Very, very common.

I am from Myanmar and your food poisoning was caused by flies because in the restaurant, there are lots of flies and when flies enter your food, they carried the bacteria that can make you sick. Always be careful with flies while you are eating.

Sorry to hear this. I travelled to Belgium last year and unfortunately got food poisoning on my second day of my trip. Killed the rest of the week. Thankfully I can speak enough French to get myself to a pharmacy and get some medicine to alleviate the symptoms. Sadly, these things can happen anywhere and it just takes a simple thing such as dodgy produce. Always puts a downer on your trip.

Most street food in Myanmar are not healthy and our local rarely try them. But, when we really wanna eat something, we check the cleanliness of shopper, freshness of the food and sometimes location(coz their may be some impurities and dust on food when they sell it on platform or nearby bus stop) I also saw both of you guys tried all street food in downtown at the same time and this is the reason why you guys get food poisoning. You guys' stomach might not be used to MM food. Sorry to hear that you guys are suffered. Even my foreigners' friends got sick for one week as soon as he arrived in MM. This may be as foreigners cannot used to our land when they are on first time. Anyway, thanks for your positive views and hope every foreigners to take care when you guys are coming to Myanmar.

As a Burmese, I know my country still has alot of work to be done to fix all these little imperfections. But after all, these little imperfections are what makes Myanmar Myanmar. When you come back to visit (developed) Myanmar in the next 30 years or so with your grandkids, you can share your travel stories on how you guys had to endure all these littte imperfections of Myanmar. P.S: You're warmly invited to stay at my parents' hotel,The Gandamar Hotel, when you come to Yangon next time. Enjoy. =)🇲🇲

So sorry to hear that guys. This happens a lot in Asia with tourists. I recommend eating cooked foods only as fresh fruit and veggies may be washed with local water full of bacteria your gut is not use to. I also don't like having ice in my drinks for this reason. I have seen people pushing big blocks of ice on the ground down side walks in Vietnam, so that's a good enough reason for me not to have ice in my drink. Good luck and take care.

"food poisoning" is just a general term. It can take from 30 mins-75 hours for different bacteria to cause symptoms. It's almost impossible to accurately find out what food contained the bacteria or virus that caused you two to become ill. I am so sorry to hear about food poisoning. Burmese’s food are good but you got to be careful about the street food if you are a western. Another big thing is service like you guys faced at the hotel. Burmese are so nice, friendly and generous, but most of the people: hotel’s staffs, waiters public servicemen are not good at service coz of the low education which caused by former tyrant military government. So, please don’t mind on the difficulties that you had faced in Myanmar. And I apologize on the behalf of those people who caused inconvenient situations for you.

I have to warn all the foreign visitors to Myanmar. The food sanitary and hygiene status in Myanmar is not on par with most of the world. I mean, we have no problem because we grew up eating dirt for all our life. But most of you come visit from more developed or regulated part of the world, so you might have less immunity against such food than us. I appreciate you all would like to get the Burmese experience, enjoy Burmese street food and such, but there always is a risk especially the food stalls, The hotel staffs should've apologized nevertheless, that's service 101. But I can somehow understand because Food Poisoning is unheard of among Burmese people. I am 25 now, but if I am vomiting, I would doubt other diseases or illness, just because I literally have no experience of food poisoning.

I got food poisoning yesterday and it was horrible. Torn between outing the culprit or not that I'm 90% sure did it to warn others about this very specific item. Risking a ten percent chance that I'm a total jerk and it was something else.🤔

Seems fishy that y’all were the only people at dinner...... I think maybe they did something intentional but didn’t want to admit it glad y’all are okay!

I'm sorry that you guys are inexperienced about Hotels here. As a local, I can already guess after first glance that hotel is unreliable and will be inresponsible for everything happened. That's pretty regular in third world countries like our country. I suggest you guys research first next time and I hope you guys won't face any more problems in the future.
