Tipper I think the Ruth Stout method may work really good for you if you can find lots of rotten hay and straw from now until late fall to start the patch late fall like they recommend in an area of your yard that is either rough (uneven) or has bad soil so after 3 or 4 years of growing you can till it all under and reseed grass so it “fixes” your yard by leveling it and putting natural nutrients into the ground .

Grandpa always said "cut a good chunk and be sure it can see." He would then add, "you 'see' with two eyes." We always cut the setting a day in advance to let the cut area scab over. The reason was simple--the setting is less likely to rot if you get an extended wet spell. I've tried various ways of growing them, but the easiest is to plow your furrow(s), put the sets cut area down, and cover with a bit of dirt. Then, as growth begins to appear, use hay to cover around them, adding as needed. This makes getting new potatoes a cinch and avoids, for the most part, any getting exposed and showing a bit of green. Jim Casada

When I was young, and new to gardening, my father-in-law, who was a great gardener, helped me learn about growing everything, and canning also. One of my first experiences with him was planting potatoes. He told me to wrap the cut pieces of potato in toilet paper to keep the dirt out of their eyes. This was around 50 years ago, I was 18 years old, and very green, and gullible. 🤓

It doesn't take to much to kill the tater skin. You need that extra piece of potato to provide water in case it is dry and hot and to provide better nutrition to recover from frost. This time of year in Kentucky its a waste to plant because they will grow slow and get frost bit and have to recover so the bloom time is the same planted now or later. You have to have blooms to get Taters. JUst sayin

It was so much fun watching you plant potatoes. I think my parents did cut the potato and we always had a long row in the garden. I'm ashamed to say I did not appreciate the work that my grandparents and parents put into a garden. As always it's so good when you bring the memories back to me. My favorite way to plant mine is to use a long handled flower bulb planter. You just stand and pull out the plug of dirt with the bulb planter and drop the potato piece in the hole. Drop the dirt back on them and move along.

I loved watching my mamaw dig taters because Tipper it was like finding treasure. We grew up hard and she taught us the older ways that I still appreciate & hold fast today. Like granny she planted her peelings (usually on St Patrick's Day) & always made sure they had enough eyes for good producing and I can remember how funny I thought that was. She was older (born 1907) but much like granny never having idle hands.. she married at 16 the same year she was baptized, raised 8 musical children, gardened, cooked, canned, made their clothes, quilted, crocheted - you name it. She left a beautiful legacy especially to us grandchildren. We think of her as the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31 & know this is the way you think of sweet Granny. TY both for holding fast & sharing part of that good life with us. Love Celebrating Appalachia & Love Y'all.

I saw a lady repurpose her larger Amazon and other shipping cardboard boxes as garden beds for potatoes. She broke them down to an open rectangle, set on the ground, fill with soil, then plant taters. Look like a great way to repurpose cardboard. Ha! I do that all the time with the gravel. I end up dumping my flower pots on my garden and forget there is gravel in them. ❤❤

Enjoyed your video. Planting taters was a big deal when I was a kid here in WV. My grandad wanted to plant on St. Patrick’s day no matter what the weather, but my Dad could talk him in to waiting if it was snowing. We planted Kennebec and Pontiacs. I can still see Daddy sittin on a bucket turned upside down cutting potatoes and always made sure there was an eye. When grandad still had his Mule, named Mike, he always plowed the taters out with Mike. It was so fun to follow behind and see those potatoes rolling out behind the plow. We had about a 1 1/2 acre plot of potatoes. Good eating for all the family. Thanks again for a great video. God Bless!

My Pop-pop planted 7 or 8 rows of potatoes about 40 feet long. That was done in the spring when I was still in school in Westminster. If I remember rightly, he said you hilled the rows so there was plenty of soil above the growing potatoes because if they were too near to the surface, the sun would turn too many of them green. It is my understanding that you have to peel off all the green from them because it tastes bitter. In the summer, when he brought the potatoes in, I was often staying with my father's sister next door and could help pick-up the potatoes. In good years, he would get 10 to 15 bushels that lasted the winter and helped feed my family as well.

I always thought that you hill up taters as a way to protect them from frost. You lay off a row and plant them in the bottom of it. As the weeds start to grow you keep covering them with a little more dirt. When the danger of frost is passed you have a hill. It really helps a family that depends on what they grow themselves out of necessity. Gravel ain't going to hurt. My garden is a mixture of gravel and red clay.

Great day ya 🌱🌱 I freeze pepper 🫑 always..they work out great.. I use my own peppers for rice or even freezing for Thanksgiving dinner. When I make a stuffing put bell peppers in them I also do other peppers in my homemade beans. 🌱🌱🥘

In gardening, I used to get my arms all scratched up. What I do to keep that from happening I take my husband's old knee high sports socks & cut the foot out of them. Then use the leg part of them to cover my arms. They're knee high so I can pull them up almost to right under my arm. It works. So I'm covered from my wrist to almost the pit of my arm. It keeps me from getting scratched & also keeps me from getting sunburned. I thought you might like to try that sometime.

We tried growing potatoes here in AZ. 2 years in a row. We just couldn’t get them to grow. It just got too hot. We grew them over the winter here but no luck. We grew them in garbage cans one year and the bags the next. Couldn’t grow potatoes but we grew lots of onions. One year we had 700 onions. Sadly we don’t have a garden anymore. Hubby had contracted Valley Fever and can no longer dig in the dirt. I do miss it.

I can't wait for the big garden. I wish y'all have a good growing season 🙂. Just to let you know, Aubree was so excited to know that you said hello to her. I let her read it herself. She's 7 by the way. Lisa from Oklahoma ❤❤😊😊

Do you ever plant potatoes from the grocery store instead of seed potatoes? Cheaper and less hassel.

You should go to Wayne’s feed in Murphy, he always has seed potato’s. He sells them by the pound so much cheaper than the box store’s do. We get the yokon gold there.
