We Grew These Sweet Potatoes WITH Tomatoes! | Companion Planting Sweet Potato Harvest 2022
This season we grew sweet potatoes in raised beds, and in this particular bed we decided to try companion planting the sweet potatoes with tomatoes.
Now, we know that our tomatoes produced very well this season, but the question became would tomatoes be a good companion plant for sweet potatoes.
Research on this point seems to vary. Some say that tomatoes are not good companions for sweet potatoes because they are prone to some of the same diseases. But, we still wanted to do this sweet potato experiment to see what our results would be.
We grew four different varieties of sweet potatoes in this bed: beauregard sweet potatoes, vardaman sweet potatoes, centennial sweet potatoes, and Georgia Jet sweet potatoes.
This sweet potato harvest 2022 shows us the results of this companion planting, and also helps us to know which sweet potatoes are the best producers for our zone 5 garden.
Thank you for watching this garden harvest video!

I was excited right along with you on the sweet potatoes. I'm a relatively new gardener. I live in Southern California. Doing container gardening. I have 2 GreenStalk towers. One day I might do potatoes. Thanks for making my learning so much fun!

Harvesting sweet potatoes and potatoes is such a wonderful experience. The GreenStalks have been great for us for both potatoes and now sweet potatoes, and really experimenting around with growing in different styles has been such a learning process for us. Keep on enjoying the process and the learning you do as you experiment. Thank you so much for enjoying the harvests with us! Have a wonderful weekend.

I grow my sweet potatoes in strawbales. Its warmer for to sweet potatoes in my cooler zone (4). This is just the video i was looking for for reassurance -I want to try growing tomatoes up and sweet potatoes as a "ground cover" in the straw bales this year but everywhere says not to. I like the proof that there can be good results. And I like to experiment! Great video and thanks for sharing your results!

This was a very exciting harvest! I think I'm with you on sweet potato being my most versatile vegetable. For the harvesting, I LOVE that feeling of unearthing the gold! As to the type of sweet potato, I prefer a sweet, non-stringy variety. Thanks for the idea of labeling a rock. I've struggled with other means of identifying plant types!

I prefer sweet and no strings but...if it's a sweet tater, I'ma gonna eat it 😂 i love sweet 🍠 I think potatoes and zucchini are pretty versatile. I like savory potato dishes but I've seen recipes in old cookbooks for potato candy. Bake'em, boil'em, put'em in a stew... Zucchini is also very versatile. I put it in pasta sauce because I like chunky sauce and it takes the flavor of the sauce. My friend makes a chocolate cake with zucchini and it's so moist and yummy 😋 Edit to add I ordered a rainbow mix of sweet potato slips this year so it will be a surprise. I ordered several varieties I wanted to make sure I got, too. I'd like to try and find different varieties my family likes that are different colors for the different vitamins. Same for regular potatoes. I'm trying some white, sarpo Mira, red Pontiac ( we usually get La Soda but this year the farm store had Pontiac), and I haven't gotten the blue, yellow or purple ones yet to try growing. We like them from the store so im sure home grown will be even better. Just finding varieties that grow well here.

I like this video. I like my sweet potato orange colored and sweet. They should be ready to harvest in a few weeks. Central Florida. I also planted some purple ones from slips as well. Fun, fun, fun!

Sweet potatoes for me must be sweet. But...... most versatile for me is potatoes. I am definitely choosing the side of "team potato "

I well prefer a sweet, non stringy sweet potato over a starchier texture. As to being on team potato, I can't fault you for that one little bit. Those are our top two for sure!

What a nice harvest. I have a general gardening question. I have had such a rough time with squirrels. Any suggestions on how to keep them out of my garden? They have dug in every pot and bed and ate my beans.
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Fortunately, we don't have too many issues with squirrels, other than that they keep burrying walnuts in our garden. But, I think that hardware cloth might help (it definitely helped in our purple sweet potato harvest), and I have read that squirrels really don't like strong smells, so that might be helpful as well. Something like peppermint, maybe? But we have never tried it personally to keep squirrels away.

You know, it's funny, when I recorded this video, we had several days of really cold weather in a row right after, and then here came the warmer weather again. Looks like we have a few more days of temps in the 50s-60s now, but then comes the potential snow. :)

Just watched a video from hippie chick off grid she grows all her potatoes in sawdust! The biggest potatoes I've ever seen! I want to try it do you know of any downside to this?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
Interesting! We haven't really done much in the way of researching growing in sawdust, but I would imagine that I would try maybe growing it in containers and not spreading it on the ground since I would think it would need time to break down and would use a lot of nitrogen in that process. Is that how she grew hers, and did she need a lot of fertilizer while growing?
@sabbyjones2308
@sabbyjones2308 Жыл бұрын
@@GutenGardening She didnt go into much details but this is how she grows it every year. It almost looks like ruth stout but with sawdust and the potatoes are dug up in the sawdust. I'm going to try it with some of the potatoes and compare
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
Yes, I would definitely say go for it, but you might research what is needed for fertilizer for sure. It is organic material, so it makes sense that it would work as a growing medium. Keep us updated on how it goes, and maybe we can experiment around with it a little too :)

Good day Guten Gardener! I'm planning the types of potatoes I'm going to plant next Spring and can't think of a better person to ask these questions. After seeing your excitement when you harvested your Magic Molly, I'm now rearing to plant some. Can you tell me the storability of Magic Molly? Have you ever planted Mondak Gold which is supposed to taste like Yukon Gold? I'm looking to plant potatoes that can store a little while since my husband is the potato eater and I'm the sweet potato fanatic, truly I am! I want to plant four types of mostly bakers, mashers and roasters. Finally, do you know if Carter's sell reliable certified seed potatoes???? This may be a hard one to answer on this Forum. It's ok if you don't. Thanks

Question 🙋🏻‍♀️ for potato growers. Last year I planted some organic white, red and purple fingerling potatoes I had purchased from the store. They grew wonderfully, but I ran into an issue. With the purple potatoes, how can you tell if they’re green and potentially toxic? I waited for the green leaves to die back before harvesting them. I cooked my first batch and within about 30-45 minutes became extremely nauseous and threw up. No other foods eaten, so it was undoubtedly the potatoes. Not wanting to have that happen again, but still would like to grow potatoes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
