@@hificat101 The fact that the first thing you bring up is a 14C28N knife is pure nonsense. That's a budget steel and has a very different cost of manufacture. The standard Bugout, Griptilian, North Fork, Adamas, and Freek models are all relatively competitive. If you're going to complain about S30v, M4, and Cruwear then you're splitting hairs over nothing especially since most of the competition in the $150 - $260 price range is poorly heat treated M390. If you wanted to argue that Spyderco or Doug Ritter had better deals, I might have partially agreed with you. But, those are exceptional deals. What I said was that Benchmade sometimes made rank average deals for what they made.

Benchmade is just down the road from my work. The cost of living in the area has increased exponentially so I think some (but probably not all) of the cost increases have to do with how much it costs to keep employees. That said KAI USA is just a couple towns away with similar cost of living increases and their US made product costs have not gone up at the same rate as Benchmade.

There is significantly more than meets the eye. This is the new version of the springs, runs on cage ceramic ball bearings, So, I like the black DLC Narrows, but if you pay full price, then you need to shop around. At 10%, $522 * 0.9 = $469.80 for non-DLC Or At $540 * 0.9 = $486.00 It is more reasonable for what I value. The engineering involved is far more than you see. To me and others who bought one, we like it and spent our money on it happily. I mean I prefer that way over unreasonable overbuilt knives that I do respect you still for buying. $399 is not a reasonable cost for the knife. I think $425 to $450 is reasonable. … and let the haters reply to my comment. Just remember every argument you present can be made back at you.

Rob, along with your statement I think people forget about Benchmade Warranty being top dog in the business, lifesharp if your into that, and Benchmade pays shipping back to you, not to mention they will send you free pocket clips and body screw kits... Those things all have a cost associated in the price. Also Oregon is a very high wage State, so if Benchmade was in Arkansas or any low wage State the price could easily be much less.... But they are in Oregon so the price represents and reflects the wages paid on top of the rest of it all. I don't think the prices are unreasonable at all. When you look at the Magnacut Mini Adamas especially and the regular mini's... They are really some of the best deals in my opinion for a truly American made knife.

As someone who owns one of these, only because they needed a super-thin ultralight full sized knife, I think this feels like a $300 knife. I think my $280 Bugout in CF and S90V is just as good and weighs less, for 1/2" smaller blade. I should have bought the Bugout first, and then I would have saved myself the money spent on the Narrows. The Narrows IS WORTH OWNING but NOT at the price they are asking. For less money you can get a custom Bugout in Damasteel, or one in S90V and Ti.

They aren’t omega springs; I’m not sure what exactly they are, but I watched the Shot Show videos when it launched and they had to modify/remake the omega springs into something different in order to make them fit in the (ahem) narrow form factor they sought. This is one reason why the cost is more justifiable than might seem the case superficially; the workmanship and tolerances required to make the design actually work.
@machtmer
@machtmer 13 күн бұрын
And as another pointed out, while “I’m not a metallurgist”, there are fabrication costs likely associated with working Ti that thin without it breaking (so assume they do lose material in the manufacturing process, thus adding to cost per knife). And as MC says, surprisingly not of this knife, there must be an audience for the Narrows as people are buying them, but BM probably factors the cost to manufacture versus limited items sold also in the price.

So there are many company's which offers extra for their name. And as long as people buy it and are happy at the end of the day. I'd say all those company's do something right. As long as they try to have some models which are affordable too. Or as long as it's their thing to make only "premium" stuff. Like crk does idk. Life and let life is say 😁

Pretty sure microtech is doing the China parts shuffle with the new CT/Hera2/Cyphers. For them to all the sudden make price cuts like they have and fact that the Hera 2 was changed 2 times last minute.

I love my older Benchmades but I will probably never buy another one. I sent my 720 in for sharpening service. They sent it back 6 weeks later and it was actually duller than when I sent it to them. I called and was told that I checked a box to not sharpen (Why would I send it in for sharpening and check the dont sharpen box?). Their customer service rep then told me I should be happy they offer "Lifesharp" and hung up on me. They are NOT the Benchmade of old. Their outrageous and they have gotten to big for their britches, especially today when they have SO many good competitors.

I have been looking st that knife since it came out and now the black version looks even better, but those price tags. $540 for the black version last time I looked. It seems to me it should be around the $300-$350 price range.

I knew nothing about this knife's hype when I first held it and I had the exact opposite reaction. It kinda sounds like your mind was already made up before you had it out of its pouch. I like Benchmade knives, but I don't like all of them. In my experience this is one of the most easy-to-carry knife I've ever owned, right up there with my Penas and Pro-Techs. I traded a Winterblade FactorB3 for it without blinking... no regrets. And I had to wait like 8 months to get that thing (which is an incredible knife, BTW). It resets the bar for lightweight full-size factory knives, for me anyway. Your mileage may vary. Full disclosure: I'm a quarter of the way through selling / trading off my 'precious' safe knives I don't use so I can honestly say they're "NIB". Fork that. If I'm afraid to put it to work, it's gotta go. So yeah, I'm about to put the spurs to this Narrows and see how it holds up under extreme duress.

Knowing what I know about the Portland area and having some knowledge with the manufacturing in that area, Gerber and Benchmade are a very short distance from each other, and a lot of the materials and process involved in making their products overlap. Seeing what Gerber is able to do with their American line these days in the same area (so cost of living is the same for their employees), with the same materials, I cannot wrap my head around where the money is going in benchmades knives. Gerber is able to do what benchmade does and much cheaper, with comparable QC these days.

For less money, you can buy a USA-made TRM Atom, with beautifully milled, countoured Ti scales, and a Mike Irie custom hand-ground Magnacut blade with a hollow grind. Benchmade is completely out of it's mind.

The problem with Benchmade is the place they’re being built. They need to move out of Oregon City, which a typical house cost 570,000. Which is almost 70% higher than the national average. There are much cheaper places to manufacture products. I couldn’t imagine how much their employees are being paid in order to live in such an expensive area. To live comfortably in Oregon City, Oregon, a minimum annual income of $109,440 for a family, and $63,200 for a single person is recommended.

I picked one up off knife swap for $300 and that was as much as I was willing to pay for it. It’s great for carrying with lighter shorts/pants like gym shorts. But it’s not a hard user and definitely some QC issues.

I like the Narrows, but the pricing is outrageous. (edit: Just to add, I collect knives too, and my most expensive USA made folder is a CRK Mnandi with bog oak inlays. I got it about 7 years ago and paid $425 new/retail. It's $500 now. I'm not one of those who craps his pants if a knife is over $50.)

Benchmade's prices have driven customers to be as extreme. Now you have people going around saying Benchmade knives should be $80-100, which is just disingenuous. They are overpriced, but they're not well over double what they should be like people are suggesting. Benchmade's current quality control is very good, their heat treat on most steels is good, with their S30V testing better than Spiderco's for edge retention. They're USA made knives with a solid lifetime warranty, and lifetime sharpening. Quit acting like they should cost the same as a Chinese knife with no warranty. Like Complex said, it's probably a $300 knife. But because people just love to bitch and moan half the community wants to suggest it's worth half of that.

The website is for the patent. It's required to allow Benchmade to sue anyone who infringes the patent for any profits made before notification of infringement. Blame the counterfeiters.

I paid 113.00 for a mini griptillion and 142.00 for the Bugout Elite and I think that was too much but I just had to get them, they are nice but not 100.00 + nice, what really bothers me is that they didn’t use flat head screws for the clip and I have cheaper China knives that have flat screws…SMMFH..

Full size, fully functional, even more so because the blade is usefully thin; it's far lighter than most other full-size knives, and much thinner in my pocket. Like driving a Cayman after nothing but teetering, top-heavy, obese SUVs. Well worth the bucks.
