We Help Robby Layton Swap an LS Engine Into His 1957 Chevy Bel Air Project

Robby Layton’s latest project is a 1957 Chevy Bel Air coupe that’s just been dragged out of a barn. And though it’s a bit too rough to make a nut-and-bolt restoration practical, it’s a perfect candidate for the restomod treatment-and that’s where we come in. Robby and crew pushed the classic Chevy, flat tires and all, through our studio doors. Now, we’re going to help him turn the Bel Air into a solid driver, so it’s ready to make the cross-county trip back home. Starting with a Chevrolet Performance LS3 long block, we get the engine built and bolted up to a TCI Streetfighter TH400 transmission. Then we drop the whole thing onto the 1957 Chevy’s frame rails. Watch it all transpire here.

Yes; I had no idea they even had a YT channel, even though I've been a customer for decades... mostly, because it never occurred to me to look. And, I first started ordering from them via "dead tree" catalogs in the mid-80s... and haven't really had a need to get anything from them for over a decade now. Maybe it's time for me to get a "hobby car" to rebuilt and give them some business again. 😋

I have bought a ton of parts (literally) from Summit Racing over the years for several of my restomod muscle cars, classic trucks and drag race cars. Most car people I now buy from Summit also...because they have the good stuff at reasonable prices with decent customer service...which is all of what automotive enthusiasts are looking for when we buy parts and accessories.

This was a great engine build and installation video, educational, informational and entertaining. ;)

You forgot to bolt the torque converter to the flex plate. She runs but she no go anywhere. Nice of Summit to sponsor the build. Congrats! Nothing like the feeling having the engine fire up for the first time but it's even better when it instantly fires on the first turn of the key. Hopefully, you will experience that one day.

I had great support from Summit when I installed one of their Blue Print 383 Strokers in my 57 Chevy. They made sure I had all I needed to make for an easy install. I can imagine how much more fun it would have been to have had their retail operation "just on the other side of my door." Summit lists the engine at 436HP, but the Blue Print dyno sheet showed 459HP. Woot!

Reminds me of over 50 years ago when my younger brother and I, in our teens, built a high performance Chevy 327 by ourselves from a bare block with all new parts. Dad owned an auto parts store and we helped ourselves to whatever parts we needed and special ordered the speed parts (cam, Edelbrock manifold, domed pistons, Holley dual-feed carb, electronic ignition, etc.). We painted the block Chevy orange and installed lots of chrome, stainless and polished aluminum parts. We ported and polished the heads, pinned the rocker studs, custom ground the valves and seats, etc. It was a beautiful engine. We put it in mom’s car to test it, then later removed it, put it on an engine stand and displayed it in dad’s store. A few months later I left for college and dad sold the engine.
