Canadian guy here- been listening to the downstairs neighbours’ domestic dispute get steadily louder and uglier for long enough that I’ve been thinking for quite a while that someone should call the cops. Problem is that most of the world used to trust the U.S. to BE the cops, and that ended about the time they somehow elected a sociopathic orange con man to run the show. I’m seeing lots of other tinpot dictators who would very much like to step up and try to run the world, but most of those look every bit as bad as the orange guy- some of them even a fair bit worse, believe it or not. The Great America that Trump’s slogan talks about trying to make happen again was created by what’s been called “the greatest generation”- a direct result of FDR finally beating back the isolationist movement and getting the US involved in a principled, selfless, and morally correct way in making the entire world a better place. The US of the 1950s was respected by the rest of the world because ordinary American people earned that respect with their sweat, toil, and blood. “America First” is the antithesis of that. I get that career politicians of whatever stripe can sometimes be corrupted by special interest groups and big business if you leave them in place too long- I think it was Mark Twain who said “politicians and diapers need to be changed often, and for exactly the same reasons”. That doesn’t seem to me to be a great reason to elect the most corrupt outsider to the political system that you can find to the highest office in the land. Looking at the comments sections below many of these videos, I am increasingly convinced that the most important thing the world needs to do to ensure all of our children and grandchildren have a future is to make a solid foundation in media literacy a part of the core curriculum for every educational system everywhere. Yes, the traditional media sometimes approach stories with a spin which reflects the economic interests or political leanings of the media organization or its ownership, but that does not mean that Russian bot farms or Qanon drops are a more reliable source of information.
