This one is extremely rare and actually may be the very last one of its kind. it should be preserved in stock form and NOT rodded or left in patina but actually restored. Step vans are catching on and going up in value and this one has the potential to really be something if actually restored and painted. its not like youd have much invested in redoing the interior as there is no upholstery other than the drivers seat. You have the talent and the sources for finding parts to do this one up right which will not only give a nice profit but will be actually saving a piece of history that cant be replaced. Give this one the respect it deserves.

I would agree, it’s a simple restore from the standpoint of the austere interior. Obviously there’s a lot of body work to to do. The rear doors are askew, that’s a bit troubling if it’s not just hinges. I’d try to stabilize the body with some interior bracing to prevent any racking. Gingerly lift the body off. Get the engine & tranny out and get them rebuilt if feasible. Put the hooks to the frame, have it and the wheels sand blasted, with the proper media, especially the body. Powder coat the frame and wheels, then start the reassembly of the chassis. With the braced body I’d try to get floor squared around inside and out. Get them both primed and the underside under coated. This would also include paying attention to any and all vertical bracing going up the sides, to at least 12-18” above the floor. The metal is really thick, though I’m sure rust has reduced that a bit, looking at the passenger side upper A pillar. I assume the panels are spot welded on though there may be filled joints? I wonder if the panels can be drilled and removed to get all the rust out? This is such a promising build that’s been rescued in the nick of time. It going to take a lot of love, time and patience. But yes, long post aside, keep it original! Just my thoughts, and yes I am the king of over kill. Blessings to all! Merry Christmas.

I follow you. Love what you guys do. I just turned 16 Dec. 10th 2019. My father owned a 1930 milk delivery van Chevy. He used it as a fishing , hunting van. After fixing it up. He sold it for 30 thousand dollars. I loved that van. And any old vans like his I love. And I plan on finding my own someday. Rebuild it myself.. ( still learning stuff lol ) and plan on using it as a mini camper van for exploring.. So.. I hope you make it original not a rat rod or cop top hot rod... I did a complete rebuild on a 1950 216 c.u. motor. The rods can be rebabbited and the rod caps have several shims between the rod cap matting face and the rod. When the bearings start wearing the oil pan can be dropped and the rod caps bolts loosened so you can then pull 1 of the shims out of each side of the cap. The shims are usually around.003 thick and they usually have 3 on each side of the cap for a total of .009-.010 possible adjustment. When the cap bolts are tightened back up, the rod and crank clearance is back in specs. This can be done about every 25,000 miles. When the last set of shims are pulled, it's getting close to the time to get the rods poured again, but you're talking "maybe" 100,000 miles. The main bearings are adjusted the same way. When the molten babbit is poured into the rebuilt rods they use centrifugal force to make them round and true. The 216 is a fun motor to rebuild and parts are still easy to to find.

One thing I would love to have once again that will likely never happen, is to get another best car I ever had in my life from 1972 to 1974. It was a blue 1964 Ford Galaxie with a 390 ci engine with a black interior. From 1972 to 1973 I took a 1500 hour course in auto mechanics. I did some tweaking with the carburetor and the distributor timing to my Galaxie and got more power and since it had a positraction differential I destroyed many tires doing burnouts.

Hello. I did an expensive search for you and found the maker of this van. It's 100% a milk delivery van 1920's not 40's or 50's. This Chevrolet van was produced late 20's early 30's. This van was produced by Detroit electric company.. The model you have, originally was electric.. The chief engineer George Bacon suggested to the company he worked for to produce gas powered delivery vans. Detroit Electric company fired him late 20's. He took his designs and created his own milk delivery company called ( *DIVCO* ). Using your van / He designed and replaced the electric with gas. He dominated the milk truck industry . All milk trucks in the USA 30's 40's 50's early 60's were his designs. He used Ford and Chevrolet companies because they were the top selling trucks in those times. The one you own is a 1920's Milk delivery van .. For more information contact ford or Chevrolet for more historical purposes. Your sitting on a gold mine.. Your van was electric converted to gas there were only 200 of your van built before taking on a new design feature. www.divco.org/history Guess what? there are only 3 in existence. you have one of them.

Bums used to camp out in them so you had to be careful going in them. They definitely weren't this type, but this one sure brought back memories.

excited to see the progress on this one. My brother was homeless for a stretch and lived in a box truck that doubled as his mobile mechanics shop. Super cool!

Wow what a cool place! "Field of dreams", you said . I think that sums it up! There's enough there to keep ya'll busy for years. I'm really enjoying your soundtracks. From the cool intros to the highlights throughout. The music is telling the story as you see it unfolding on your screen. Like the song playing during the 'ol gals upwards climb out of the weeds and up onto the trailer. Loving it!. Great story so far. I think this gem is in good hands!

I recently read an article on Wikipedia about the Pak-Age-Car, which was a 1930's delivery van, made by the Stutz Motor Company until it went bankrupt in 1936, and then by Diamond T Trucks until 1941, when Wartime needs ended production. It says that 3.500 were built, and only 10 survive. If Chevy only made 100 of their Dubl Dutis, yours IS the only survivor, assuming that math holds up. If so, I look forward to seeing as close to a factory restoration as possible!

I'm pretty sure those were still around as milktrucks when I was a kid in the early 60's (I'm 63) in N.Y. and upstate N.Y. too. I remember them because I thought they were so cool. Such classic old time styling. 👍🇺🇸

Love the sweatshirt. My one question is how you. Kept it clean while meandering through a salvage yard. You may find that in 1940 the US was starting to become the arsenal of democracy . The changeover to war production was getting into first gear and certain vehicle productions were being laid to the side and your stepvan was probably one of them.

Such a rare vehicle would need to be restored to a certain extent . especially with the truck nose. Even though the US didn't enter WW2 until 1941 the bigger corperations were gearing up for War production from 1939 so the van was probably considered to be of little importance compared with GM's other projects such as Chev military pattern trucks and GMC 6x6's.

They're rare now because they were used up and scrapped in the 50s to 60s . Many were turned into sheds and storage buildings.. But they built several thousand of them for all kinds of service companies and delivery sevices. I had a 1941 Ford 1ton Bread van complete with a good engine. Stripped it off the frame and made a hoist truck out of it and a storage shed out of the truck body..

I enjoyed watching you two make the deal. The seller was a really decent bloke and I have the feeling he was happy to accept your price because of your enthusiasm for the van. I wonder if showing your excitement may have actually helped you make a deal here. I think most sellers prefer to sell to someone that realises and appreciates what there’re buying rather than just a rat rodder looking for something different. No offence meant to the rat rodders but this may just turn out to be far to historically important to hot rod. Looking forward to watching the progress. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
