It’s crazy because the article exposes how Sefton and Jamie were actually primarily responsible for the missteps instead of the previous consensus that they were forced to make this game. Imagine intentionally driving a ship towards an iceberg then sneaking out on the life raft right before impact

It’s not that hard to believe actually EA out of the blue made a dead space remake but in general publishers want easy money live service versions of classic Ips make money. Developers are not our friends, the last 10 years I noticed this push to blame the publishers. It’s a logical idea mega corps want profits and don’t care for creativity, but if there’s one thing more money hungry than a billionaire it’s a millionaire or sub millionaires. They wanted money and have seen that those new fangled live service games make money. I'm beginning to think the live service curse is somewhat of a "brain rot" the big suits of the companies have when they see all the successful ones out there, thinking it's easy money and people will eat up anything. It's clearly not the case and even in a different category of live service like Gacha games where you have set "rules" about them being completely free at base, battle passes with resources, unfair "gem packs" and whatnot you still have so many failed games that completely miss the mark because they think it's an easy feat to make such a game because "others are successful". It's so sad when the employees aren't even in the know about what they'll be working on, too... All about greed, huh...

I mean, try to name a good live-service especially shooter type, besides Helldivers in like the last 5-10 years. You can probably find 1 or 2 that are roughly 10 years old. Also, if you look at completely different things like Smite which I often don't even think of as live-service, though it is... you can find a few more. But look at those ones that ARE good. Often not shooters, often no lootboxes or are free with cosmetic-only lootboxes. (Smite) I guess there's also Warframe but anyway... quite rare. Now, if we define "good" as simply successful... then there's Fortnite and Apex and stuff... but eh. Not really what I mean. And look at the monetization again, of something like Helldivers vs Fortnite. But the reason we keep getting the bs we are getting... is Fortnite apparently made over $20 BILLION since it's relaunch. And EVERY other studio would probably be happy with even an extra $5 billion. Well, "happy." They're never satisfied just making money. They ALWAYS need to make MORE. But, like... if they can START with an extra $5b, that's good.

What stuck out to me was the term “toxic positivity.” That’s almost an exact echo of earlier Schrier articles about the troubles at BioWare. He reported how leadership at BioWare would brush aside looming troubles in development with the misplaced confidence that “BioWare magic” would make everything somehow come together. And of course that also happened at CDPR, as you mentioned. Executives burying their heads in the sand is a recurring theme in these types of debacles, it seems.

I mean, really BioWare magic with Anthem. Bethesda magic seems to mostly work. Idk how they keep turning out the crap they do and everyone happily gobbles it up. I don't think F4llout was very good. Most seemed to skip 76 but we still got Starfield doing reasonably well. Honestly, I think the best thing about Skyrim was the dragons. Other than that, it's mostly worse than Oblivion in every way. Everyone bought 11 copies. Everyone's gonna buy their next thing despite them STILL not using a new engine, probably... still having all the same flaws and everything... regardless of how good it is... like just everyone will buy TES 6 / "Skyrim 2" and Fallout 5.

@@Paradox-es3bl Starfield did reasonably well but it still confirmed what most people thought after Fallout 76, Bethesda has lost it. Starfield is boring, repetitive, the story is garbage and the gameplay average and stale. It's also dead with more people already back playing Skyrim because modders CAN'T change anything because of the way it's been coded, so even if they finally bothered putting the Creation kit out, modders won't save the game from itself. Maybe nobody learned anything, but i doubt it. People are starting to feel the inflation and the Bidenomics effect... they don't have the amount of free money laying around they once did and with the price of game going up... It's not looking well for Bethesda giving their reputation is pretty much screwed, they haven't made anything good in over 10 years.

It's weird that Hill would know nothing of live service games and yet want to make one. I know the reporting has always been that this was Rocksteady's idea all along, but i wonder how incentivized they were. Not to compare retail to games development, but i know as a manager ive been pressured by corporate to push items that i knew weren't going to sell in our area. They don't come out and say "you should do this". They say "we thunk this has a great chance to be a big product, why don't you give it a try" and if you push back, they'll mention that meeting sales goals is an important factor in determining how manybhourscare budgeted (the implication being they'll cut hours for the department and short staff us, setting us uo to fail so they could replace managers). TLDR: just because it was Rocksteady's idea doesn't mean WB (who we know pushed live service ideas hard on other games) didn't imply that live service looter shooter was a better idea than puzzle game or live service brawler.

As somebody who's been through the hiring process at a few studios, that's just how it happens sometimes. My first job didn't tell me what I was working on until my first day. Turned out to be a Black Eyed Peas dance game 😂 The studio I currently work at had me sign an NDA during the interview process so they could talk about their unannounced project. So idk why other places don't do that.

I imagine suicide squad could have been a great pvpve game. Multiple teams of suicide squad members compete in finding the Justice League member on the map and fight it, while also fighting each other - would have a dark tone similar to the opening of the better suicide squad movie, which indeed sacrifices the first squad.

Here’s a huge issue I had and I think many others had This was Kevin Conroy’s last run as The Batman The 4 Arkham games were all really really good and his passing really hurt millions over the planet When we learned we got one more run with him I think we all thought the trailer was gonna be where we got to play as the Bat one more time One more run with Kevin as the final stamp in his legacy And it wasn’t a game about the bat at all It wasn’t Arkham It wasn’t what so many fell in love with And instead of being an amazing hurrah for Kevin; it was a blemish A disappointment; and a letdown to know that this is what they did to a character I KNOW is so many people’s top 10 Rocksteady fucked this one up man

Seems like WB is at the center of a lot of this (obviously). They pushed CDPR to release 2077 earlier than they thought was right to please shareholders, and tried to morph Rocksteady into a dev team they quite frankly never really were. Greed is what is tanking WB and so my sympathy just goes to the people forced to work on these games, all the while knowing the people who actually will play it are going to hate it. Tough times in gaming as usual

I have a hot theory that Sefton and Jamie wanted to part ways from WB but they were still on schedule with them but after the time was up they left. They made sure this game failed just to give a big F you to the company so they cant milk the arkham verse off of the previous past life of the studio. Its like that one DC universe where everyone dies because the person who created that specific universe didnt want his characters likeiness to be in other media.

@Sounds2Human
@Sounds2Human 2 ай бұрын
@@whosDaBun think for a minute outside the box..... I JUST said he wanted to kill his universe (follow my train of thinking if you're gonna disagree.) Not only would the fanbase hate the game but they won't let the franchise live just so it could end. You don't know how a artist feels about the work they did. Not saying I'm correct but I think there's an underlying issue with popular IP's and greedy corporate minds getting their hands and juicing those properties in our faces. Right now the multiverse and antiheroes are in, the last 3 games WB printed out all have Multiverses in them (one of them is in the name). It seems to be a trend going on at WB and everyone under has to follow suit. Hill literally could've been like "yeah I don't agree so imma crash out cause you're not gonna pimp out my universe or world... I plan on leaving in 2 years, when this game flops ill bring everyone passionate to my new project if trusted." I'm just thinking bruh made those decisions because the bad taste will last beyond after the game's shutdown. Hell they are dropping an Arkham game AGAIN because this failed nd it's on Oculus... Nobody asked for that and this is their last hurrah to keep folks engaged with the company. Guess what I bet ppl won't buy it as a boycott to Rocksteady When the heart and mind leaves the body is dead already...

I think more devs should quit if they aren't interested in a project. I couldn't imagine working on a game for 5 years being unhappy with a project. Especially when that project is predicted to be a flop. Devs have no say. Great ideas are never heard, and so you've got devs who now don't care. If dev teams aren't on the same page, the game will probably fail. No way in hell would I want to help develop a game that I have zero interest in. I'd quit in a heartbeat. Many veteran devs left, because they were not enjoying what they were making, and I 100% agree. You can't make a good game if everyone hates the game they're making. It's not gunna happen. Most devs right now are burnt out as well. Imagine working on 4 Assassins Creed games, over the course of 15+ years, and the studio just received confirmation by the publisher that they are making a 5th Assassins Creed game. OMG, I'd jump out a friggen window. I'd quit. It is so incredibly important to have a dev team do other projects. Not have them work on a games for decades. Give them different projects every 4- 5 years, not the same stupid games, over and over again, or those devs are going to burn out. Burnt out devs just cannot make a good game, if there is no passion.

It’s insane these people keep trying to make their own lives service model when the fans over and over again reject these things. One of the key reasons some live services work because they are unique rare catered experiences that gamers don’t want all the time. Sometimes you have a fav Live service game that you dip into and then other single player games when you aren’t feeling that live service. Gamers don’t want every frigging game to be a live service model

We might need a different, or maybe just consistent, new terminology for 'live service' and BAD live service practices. I'm seeing a trend of game being connected constantly to the internet being inherently bad or a game featuring online multiplayer being bad. I understand why this game was a disappointing diversion from what they've done before, but I feel like we are jumping the gun on all games coming out that are competitive or connected experiences and labelling them LIVE SERVICE and that AUTOMATICALLY SUCKS. I'm saying that as someone who doesn't play many multiplayer games, but just feels like we need to reign ourselves in just a bit about the subject. I'm all for not accepting predatory practices from these publishers, but let's ground the conversation going forward a bit maybe

No matter how it's cut, it was just a bad idea from the start but they wanted their live service cash cow. Superheroes and Supervillains are all so different, putting them all together in a multiplayer is insane - unless you literally have a beat em up. The execs had no clue. Pretty similar to the "leaders" over at Disney lol If they'd have just made an exploration single player game - one where you played mainly as Harley and built your team up, then towards the end had missions playing as the squad YOU made. Metroidvania style things only certain characters could do/access. Could all lead to a heist to break Joker out of prison...I dunno. But it'd require an actual story and effort, not just stats and menus.
