We visited The Netherlands for just over a week and wanted to stay in a small town to get a feel for Dutch neighborhood life - and we got it in Reeuwijk! We also did a day trip to Utrecht and shared all our recommendations while meeting up with a Wandering Aimfully Member (aka WAIMer). The Netherlands is such a lovely country and we'd absolutely go back to see more of it!

I doubt you got any 'weird' looks because you were walking, instead of biking. Walking is perfectly common in the Netherlands. Being a stranger in a small community, where everybody knows everybody, might have earned you some looks though. 😉

@@VeniVidiAjax still not the same. Amsterdam is build on a platform of poles while Utrecht is not. Both cities are old. Utrecht dates back to the Roman empire under the name Ultrajectum and had castles. Can't recall if Amsterdam has a castle? Even the spoken Dutch dialect is different in both cities :)

They probably didn't look weird at you for walking instead of cycling, but because they sensed you aren't from around here. People can often tell when somebody is a foreigner. And they don't mean you any harm, they just know.

Good of you to stay in a small village or neighbourhood, outside of the tourists attractions like Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Your the first ones I hear to pronounce Gouda the correct way.(10swanns for that one) There are villages like Reeuwijk all over the Netherlands, friendly people, nice architecture, historic buildings, waterways canals and lakes everywhere. If your first choice was the Netherlands before leaving the US, it is likely you'll come back and explore the rest of our country!!

🤣😂😅 Dutchie here: If you get strange looks while walking, you’re probably on the bicycle path! A coffeeshop is where you get hasj; ask for a café! The restaurant called ‘t Wapen (Shield) and Het Badhuis translates to bath house, which it probably what it used to be. Delicious (heerlijk) if the ‘h’ is not pronounced clearlijk, you are saying “eerlijk” which means honest. Stroopwafels are best eaten lukewarm, so put it on top of a tea- or coffee cup for a short while. Glad you enjoyed your stay here!

I grew up in Waddinxveen, where the Landerij is situated. So fun to see you guys chose that particulier restaurant. Must have been a nice hike through the fields though the A12 can be a bit noisy.

Funny to hear North-Americans talking about what is basically my home (your Reeuwijk house was 300 m from my house). I love it here (I'm originally from the south of The Netherlands) especially the lakes at Reeuwijk and the old city of Gouda. Furthermore it's situated very strategically right between all major cities. Hope you enjoyed it !

Hi guys, very fun video to watch because i live in reeuwijk, actually a couple of houses up the road from your BnB! It is a beautifull place to live and recreate with all the water surrounding it. Most dutch villages have lots of water because the netherlands is situated for 1/3 below sealevel, but Reeuwijk is unique because of all the boats. We even have a festival “music on the lake” where everyone “parks” their boats in front of the main stage! It therefore is rather expensive place to live, but other than that representative for smalltown dutch living. Gouda en Utrecht are adorable cities as you described perfectly. Always nice to try and learn a couple of native words so they know you really enjoyed it, very polite! For everyone wondering, english is our second language and we strat learning it in primary school. Thanks for the visit and fun video!

I lived in the neighborhood called "Bloemendaal" in Gouda near Reeuwijk. I lived walking around the lake for hours (Reeuwijkse Plas / Goudse Hout) and lots of us do. I don't think anyone would have been looking at you weirdly because of that. The place is amazing for both walking and cycling and there's paths for both. I see you got the Goudse Stroopwafels, they're one of the best you can get. I live in California now and I remember my colleagues here were so fond of them, I had a suitcase with 200+ of them on a trip home. Really felt like a smuggler. I went to Uni in Utrecht, so it was nice to see you go there by train. It's what I used to do daily before moving to student accommodations. It certainly looks different from what I remember, I guess they renovated the train station. Looking pretty modern!

The restaurant “het Badhuis”, literally translated “the Bathhouse” is or was, I think, once upon a time, years ago, when I was studying in Utrecht I am 72) exactly what it says. There then were many houses still without a bathroom. So, if you wanted to really have a good shower you went to a bathhouse. The one you were in has been transformed in a nice restaurant with still the old building with the letters badhuis on it. ❤

Surprise/tasting menu are usually the chef's own choice/best dishes, so it's almost always the right choice. So you know: Wapen means coat of arms Landerij means land/estate

‘Heerlijk’! Haha 😂 A correct ‘h’ in Dutch is quite challenging and if you pronounce it too silent, you end up with something sounding like ‘eerlijk’, which means ‘honest’.

Very nice guys! loved the video. Very fun! Utrecht is a very nice city indeed. A had a good laugh about your pronounciation. We had this experience some years ago: I had with a friend of mine a easy tip (sollution) by accident but it worked. His name is "Joost" But our English friends called him Joooost. So I said for fun: It's "Joost" like " toast". And from that day on his name was easy to pronounce for our Englisch friends. And guess what? Most of our dutch words with dubble O can be pronounced as "OA". So for you: Stroopwafel = Stroapwafel. Keep up the good work! Next trip: seems like Scandinavia: Norway or Danmark..

@@sarammendoza that habitat quite frequently overlaps with gardens or cycle- or footpaths. Even if you’re just cycling to town minding your own business, you can get snapped at or bitten by a swan from the side because it turns out he/she has her kids in the water to the side. Nothing against them by the way: It’s just a few weeks of being careful; the animals are beautiful and the little ones really cute 🥰.

If you visit the Netherlands in the near future come and visit Limburg and especially Zuid-Limburg. It isn't flat like the rest of the country but hilly. Very green and very beautiful. I loved your video it's very refreshing!

I was born in Reeuwijk and lived there for 23 years, it's really nice to see how you guys experienced all kinds of things in my hometown :) I am glad you had a great time, I would like to mention a few more things you could do on an eventual next visit: visit Loetje restaurant (near Het wapen) opened in August and has really good beef :) : Visit Surfplas and the restaurant Het Reeuwijkse Hout, it's a little beach area we have with beautiful sights over the lakes (it's not one lake there are multiple 😀) and I would recommend to either rent a bike or an OV fiets at the station, the Reeuwijkse Plassen (lake area) is very nice for biking , and if you have time come also visit Tempel and Reeuwijk-Dorp, because you stayed in Reeuwijk-Brug now 😀

I bike past De Landerij omw to work :) and 't is short for "het" and its prenounced somewhat similar but different. Its "old" dutch. It still just means "the" in this case. Its also pretty cool that you walked over the zwarte weg, as i grew up all near that. Thanks youtube algorythm for putting this video in my recommended.

Amsterdam is nice for a day or two, a museum or general vibe. The real stuff is what you have been doing, great choice. I did something similar in Paris, outside the peripferique a hotel,appartment and live as a Parisian (not a tourist). Camping I do the same, just away from the crowd and an occasional visit to do some sightseeing or museum. In general I walk, no car, no bus, the occasional metro maybe. One set in stone rule is, don't stand in line longer than 15min. Anything longer is imho a waste of time. People often do the obvious, imho not doing so makes your trip not only much cheaper (half) but also bit more unpredictable and fun.

I live in a small town in the northern part of the Netherlands, dont like the big cities myself, they are just way too crowdy for me personally. Try the smaller towns next time you visit , im sure you will like it :) thumbs up from me ^_^

Phonetics for English speakers: 1:24 Gouda (well pronounced in video) 7:26 't Wapen (utt wah-pen) < U in utt is almost silent 8:15 De Landerij (duh lon-dur-i) 9:47 Heerlijk (here-like) < most people to say lekker (lack-cur) 11:00 Badhuis (bot-house)< the dutch ui sound doesn't exist in the english language, to say it you must hear it 12:26 Stroopwafels (strope-wah-fells)

Utrecht is just a gorgeous city. One of my ancestors came from there to southern Africa, and I also studied there during the '90's. I always make sure to visit Utrecht when in Europe.

Both places are beautiful! I'm from The Hague. Also try Leiden. Hire a scooter next time😉 Or hire boat in Utrecht. Not expensive to hire.

't Wapen is pronounced 'ut wahpun', not 'twahpun'. 't comes from 'het' . So really it says 'Het Wapen' (wapen means weapon but also stands for 'coat of arms' (I think that might be it in this case but I"m not sure)

and no-one told you that 'wijk' is pronounced 'vike' - like bike but with a 'v'. it is the same derivation as the town with a '-wick' or a '-wich' at the end.

I've been told by Dutch on several occasions that you should visit the smaller towns and cities to get the real feeling for Dutch urban life. I think it's true. You avoid the tourists and the stress and see basically the same. Places like Utrecht, Amersfoort, Den Bosch, Gouda, Groningen and many more are worth visiting.

we have the letter a and aa in dutch but if there is only one consonant between vowel's the a is pronounced as aa so you said wappen instead of wapen and its pronounced waapen later you say badhuis that is an good example of a word with multiple consonant's between vowels so there you say a but you pronounce the a as an dutch e most English people do that because the English pronunciation of the a is how the dutch pronounce the e and how the English pronounce e is how the dutch pronounce i and how the English pronounce the i we have the letter ij also English always pronounce the oo how the dutch pronounce the oe what you said was stroepenwafelen. but the g in Gouda was perfect

Super appreciate the tip! When you're a foreigner in a place where you don't speak the language, it's already hard enough trying to organize plans. We often go with the less stressful transportation option that gets us exactly where we want to go ❤️. Some travelers LOVE the challenge of figuring these things out, that's not for us 😂. But, we super appreciate that there is a public transit system for people!

Such a nice video about sniffing Dutch culture in both a small town and Utrecht, and not in Amsterdam. Oh "stroopwafels" is pronounced "strope - wahfels" (a like torah, Lisa...) With "heerlijk" you swallow the "ij" a little. "Heerlijke" is the adjective form.

U - trecht comes from Ultra Trajectum. it was a roman border ford on the river rhine, north of Utrecht is free Germania, south is the roman empire

Great video about an area where I spent a lot of time as a kid. Did you know the US State department considers Dutch the easiest language to learn for American diplomats? That said, I imagine they teach it without all the extra vowels you guys tend to add to words.

You're good on the Gouda but not the stroop waffels. Stroop is simply pronounced " strope". It means syrup ( siroop in Dutch, yes with an " i ", whereas "stroop" is a contraction of the word). Wafel(en) spelled with only one "f" requires a long "a" pronunciation as in crying "wah wah wah". Wait till you learn how to say "ei" or "ij". The ij is actually a "y" with dots on top. That was a pretty little town you stayed in. I grew up in The Hague and loved all our weekend trips to the cute little towns.

Your pronounciation of "Gouda" was perfect. The rest, not so much, to be honest. If you want to live here, you will have an uphill battle with the language! (and with the housing market, unless you have lots and lots of money).
