As someone who also lives here, it is surprising the things we take for granted. What is amazing to some are just ordinary to others. I moved here from Ontario when I was 10. I was a mall rat, I worked there and then brought my kids there. Just an normal day in the life. I am so glad that others still have fun there.

Living in northern Alberta, I have been visiting this mall, off and on, for over 40 years, when I visited Edmonton. As I child, I was there a few times, but it was the type of frivolous expense that my father wouldn't go for often. When my late wife, and I were first married, in the late 90s, we went, every trip to Edmonton. Even stayed in the hotel, a couple times. Then, in the 00s, when our kids were young, we went quite a bit. Now that my sons are grown, and my wife has past, I, pretty much, never go there.

That giant yellow & red roller coaster that was closed, was actually the cause of death for 3 people some years back. My sister and I have rode it. It's fun, but very quick. As someone who has lived in Edmonton since 2012, this has been a good watch. I've only been inside this mall like 8 times total in the past 12 years, lol. Once you've been 2 or 3 times, there's not much else to it. It's cool how you just spent the night at a hotel in the mall itself. I've driven by this mall many times as an UberEats/DoorDash/SkipTheDishes driver in the city, but I refuse to take any orders that have me go inside, lol. Way too much walking for too little pay. Enjoyed the show! 😊

I moved from a farm to Edmonton in 1981 and drove a truck hauling pipe to the construction of phase 1 of the mall. I also hauled pipe to Manulife Place and Heritage Mall which were being built at the same time. I went to NAIT in the fall of '81 and ended up buying a house 3 km south of the mall. 'West Ed' has been a fixture in my family's lives ever since. My children worked there as teens and we used to find ourselves at the mall quite frequently. These days, we tend to avoid the place. It's interesting to go occasionally just to see the changes, though. Very good video. Interesting to see West Ed from a foreigner's perspective. 😊

I grew up in Edmonton and have a lot of fond memories in that mall. Two things you missed out on because they aren't there any more - The movie theatre you were in used to have a giant animatronic dragon that would regularly breathe fire. I used to love waiting for it to happen as a kid. They'd play eerie music before it happened to hype everyone up, and you could feel the heat of the fire. Also, there used to be another bowling alley there that did black light bowling, not dissimilar to the first minigolf you did. Oh, and not sure if they still do it, but I imagine they would, but the place where the guys were first riding the tiger and the panda has a stage, and they host an annual talent show there.

The Mindbender, the world's largest indoor triple loop roller-coaster is no more. Permanently closed after nearly 40 years. As a local in my youth, I'm sad to see it gone, since I have been on the coaster more than a 100 times, not gonna lie. Apparently the structure required repairs that proved to be too costly, so they have removed it. :( And to think, it only killed 3 people and critically injured one, albeit this was WAY back in 1986 when some of the cars uncoupled during a run. We used to call it the Mindblender for that reason.

2:55 - it's a bit crazy how the mall sizes go. Many of the largest malls in the world are in the Middle East and Asia. But some of those are questionable, like the ones that aren't even fully occupied. North America indeed has two big malls - but sometimes there's debate as to if West Edmonton Mall or the Mall Of America is bigger depending on whether or not you count the space for the amusement parks and other attractions, that sort of thing. West Edmonton Mall has more leaseable store space, and more stores in number, than the Mall Of America does.

That giant parking lot used to be overflowing when that place opened. My uncle had someone lie down in a parking spot so he couldn’t park there. He was saving it. 😂

I heard of an old guy who ‘thought’ he remembered where he parked his car. He was positive that someone had stolen it. Six months later, it was found in the parking lot right where he had parked it.

I'm not sure if it's true but I heard the old roller coaster was so worn out that it couldn't be repaired and pass inspection. Thus, the closure. As scary as it was, I somehow was convinced to ride it three times back in the 80's. I doubt I would do it today if it was still running.

Fun fact- Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier practiced at the WEM ice rink back in the 80’s when they were with the Edmonton Oilers :) They also had dolphins to perform a show years ago. But I’m happy they don’t anymore. Dolphins don’t belong in a mall….. they deserve to live in the ocean.

I have been there so many times and I remember me and my cousin were staying in the igloo themed room and we went in the mirror maze and died in laughter because we hit the mirrors confusingly and there are seals there and the are so cool. The theme park is amazing but the are planning on taking down the triple loopy looped rollercoaster and brbn street is so nice I usually meet my cousins at brbn street

In the late 80's, I actually LIVED in the mall. I worked as a Captain for the "Deep Sea Adventure" Submarine ride that is no longer in use, still have a big replica Pirate ship in the "lake". But I would work late, and then be scheduled for a morning shift, I would have a sleeping bag and sleep in the submarine! Other places, there used to be a bronze whale with its mouth open and you could go inside, it was part of a water feature - I passed out in there a couple times after drinking too much at the bars on Bourbon street. Oh what fun we had ! Don't forget the "Killer rollercoaster (think they removed in now), that killed 3-4 people when the back car came off the track and hit a concrete pillar. I was on on the the first rides with people, they company had tested the coaster with sandbags, so when they were ready to go with real people, staff were the first to ride!!.
