This band owned the early years of MTV. So glad you've revisited them! You have to check out "Save a Prayer", "Rio", "Is There Something I Should Know", "Union of the Snake", and "New Moon on Monday". To answer your question as to which song was "bigger"... well, the nod would have to go to "The Reflex". "Hungry Like the Wolf" hit #3 on the charts and was certified Gold, whereas "The Reflex" was certified Platinum and hit #1. They actually only had two #1 songs in their run - the other was "A View to a Kill", from the James Bond movie of the same name. The lead singer is Simon LeBon. the keyboardist is Nick Rhodes. Then you have bassist John Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor. (Yes, three guys named Taylor, and NONE of them are related!)

Hungry Like the Wolf is likely the most well known song, wouldn't be surprised if it has more in all-time sales. Personally I prefer Reflex...bought the 45 rpm single at about 13 years old. Got it with the Icicle Works "Whisper To A Scream" IIRC--that would be a great 80s song/video to react to, JAY AND AMBER! Link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9N6o9Sm2d6znZs.html

Hungry Like the Wolf broke Duran Duran to the US, at least. Reflex wasn't a better song, but rode to #1 on the wave of Duran-mania. I prefer their earlier material, actually... Planet Earth, Waiting For The Sound of Thunder, Anyone Out There... great stuff on RIO, too, Last Chance on the Stairway *made* me take up bass guitar all those decades ago.

YES! Remember the battle of the bands MTV did every Friday night and you could call in to vote? I think The Reflex was the overall winner of that contest. Man! It was GREAT being young in the 80s! I had just come of age and MTV really was such a big part of everyone's life! I still remember the original 5 VJs names. Such a shame it's gone, but I'm glad I was able to be there when it was THE big deal that it was.

You’ll get many Duran Duran recommendations in the comments here. But I’m going to recommend one that is often overlooked or dissed, though I think it’s one of their best songs. Wild Boys. The official video is one that tells a story, though it’s peculiar enough that the story told is open to interpretation. The song and video both carry a dystopian, post apocalyptic feel.

Yeah, I saw a video of John Taylor discussing and playing the bass to this song in a recent video. He said when they were done with the album, they didn't think they had a hit song on it and felt that The Reflex could have been that hit song but it needed help. So they happened to hear a new song at a gathering, of, who else, INXS's "Original Sin" and liked what they heard so they called their producer to come help them out. The producer agreed, took The Reflex and did some "remix" magic to it, like all those little tidbits at the very beginning and the middle, along with a few little other things, which gave it the magic it needed. :)

They’re still releasing music and not just an eighties band (their biggest hit worldwide, Ordinary World, was 1993). Their new album is about to drop and they are a brilliant live act. Their early new wave/post punk image was very edgy, but then they got huge and stylised into a “boy band” which really hurt them in the long term. They’re actually great musicians.

@@snikkerr1949 They absolutely weren’t a boy band, but you know what I mean. The expensive suits, new romantic slickness and music videos filmed on luxury yachts really stopped them being perceived as serious musicians. The band members themselves have said this rapid success hurt them in the long run. Believe me, it took guts being a male DD fan in high school in 1984! They were influenced by Bowie, Chic and Roxy Music and are a serious rock band (one listen to John’s bass playing tells you their funk rock legitimacy). But after 1985 they were largely abandoned (apart from the Wedding Album) and although they have kept going and regained a lot of love and respect, I still cringe when I hear others call them an “eighties” band. Still the best band I’ve seen live in concert (in 2013) and most of my favourite stuff of theirs is from the 90s-2000s.

There are not enough words to describe how much the 14 and 15 year old me loved Simon Le Bon, the lead singer. They were like the 80's version of the Beatles in regards to girls chasing them. They were a huge part of what was known as The British Invasion. There were so many great British bands that made it big in America in the 80's. There was this girl there who had her radio on and "The Reflex" was playing. At the time, I had not really been exposed to that much pop music, so it was different and I liked it immediately. I don't even think I knew who was singing the song until sometime later, I went to my best friend's house, and he had Duran Duran's _Seven and the Ragged Tiger_. The single entered #2 behind Hall and Oates and their single Out of Touch in December 1984. Then Madonna's Like A Virgin (her first #1 U.S. single) leapfrogged Duran Duran into the #1 position the following week, where The Wild Boys didn't budge at #2 for an additional three more weeks. Eventually, The Wild Boys slipped to #3 and Like A Virgin kept it's #1 slot for a total of six consecutive weeks.

I met Duran Duran in an amazing situation in 1983. It was in South of France, Frejus, and the Roman Amphitheatre at a David Bowie "Serious Moon Light Tour" David Bowie was No1 with lets dance and Duran Duran were No2 with "Wild Boys". The Amphitheatre in the bowl held a cloud of Cannabis in the evening summer sun. I was humming to myself their song, Wild Boys. Then I saw simon and Yasmin La Bond along with John Taylor and the other band members. We were raised up on a level just above them next to the stage. I couldn't believe my eyes and called out to them " keep up the great music boy" corny I Know!. With that the echo of the start of "lets Dance" started and all the Duran entourage can up to our level and we spent the entirety of the concert sat next to them. My girlfriend was speechless in shock" My only regret was Simon or John told me they were meeting David Bowie after the concert. we should of been cheeky and tagged along. But an Amazing time in music.

We couldn't afford cable so I couldn't see the video on MTV but there was a show called Friday Night Videos that was on very late on Fridays on one of the networks. I would set the VCR to record it, hoping this video would be shown. When it finally was, I swear I watched it over and over again. I still love the video, but for different reasons. It's such a great time capsule of the mid-80s. The hair, the fashion, and even the classic 80s dance moves. I still love Duran Duran. They're still making great music. That's right, the group name is Duran Duran. The lead singer is Simon Le Bon. They were phenomenally popular and I very much enjoyed their music. For me, they were the band you loved and danced to, but never bought their music. I guess it's worth mentioning that they were more of a New Wave band rather than a rock band. Their style, hair and unique sound put them into a defined category... Back in the 80's the James Bond films were huge, and the line from the movies "Bond, James Bond" was well known. I remember the lead singer in an interview introducing himself as "Bon, Simon le Bon". It made me laugh so much that I still vividly remember it... You might like to react to their song "Rio" now.

@8:00, it’s funny you mention the keyboardist throwing that Blue Steel look. The keyboardist is named Nick Rhodes. He and the bass player John Taylor were childhood friends and the original founding members. When they went out to recruit musicians for the group that would become Duran Duran, they let everyone know that wearing make up and very fashionable clothing was going to be band’s look. It worked like gangbusters. Now over 40 years later, Duran Duran is still touring and making new albums. Nick is still rocking the makeup and high fashion.

The Reflex was actually a musical collaboration between Duran Duran and Nile Rodgers of Chic. Rodgers actually has an incredible number of songwriting credits and collaborations to his name, everything from Le Freak, The Reflex, Get Lucky, Like A Virgin, to Let's Dance. He's incredibly talented, and I really enjoyed seeing him perform with Duran Duran in Vegas a few years ago.

You're right, The Reflex is a collaboration in a sense between DD and Nile Rodgers. Basically, DD asked Rodgers to remix the song, and he did from the master tapes of The Reflex. When DD was sent the remix, what they heard astounded them. Rodgers' production and sampling techniques that Rodgers employed at the time were quite innovative and ahead for its time. Sampling was in a sense "relatively new" in the music industry at the time. And, most sampling was done by taking samples from other songs or creating samples by recording sounds. With The Reflex, Rodgers sampled from within the track, which again, was unique and creative.
