This water wheel design is an easy to construct water wheel made from everyday lumber. We needed to get going on making the old west mining town water wheel, tower, and sluice system. We knew that a water wheel was a fun working prop that kids would enjoy looking at and listening to while they panned for gold. This how to shares how we built and fabricated our version of an old western mining water wheel. This realistic working prop can be mounted like we have done, or on the side of an old mill, over a nice water feature in your backyard, over a pond, or water garden. We plan on making a similar one for our home haunt this year to go in our old western haunted ghost town. The water wheel is constructed of 2" X 4," 2" x 6," and 2" x 12," wood framing. I glued and screwed everything together using biscuit joints and 3" deck screws. I then cut mitered pieces of fence boards or panels and used them as my water wheel fins to catch the water. The wheel edges were sanded and rounded over using a 3/8" round over bit on my router. We caulked all the corners and seams to help direct all the water to run off the paddles as it turned and spun. To finish the wheel I burned the wood with a torch to help the wood grain pop. Then Jeana added all the finishing touches by painting and ageing. We did seal it really well with a clear water Thompson's sealer. I used pillow block bearings and an aluminum axle to mount the wheel to its a frame stand. The bearings ended up working so well I had to add a pressure block with marine grease over the axle to help slow it down a bit.

Nice video. It looks like a fun build but wouldn't the wheel last longer using treated wood?

You bet, but I wanted to age the wood and look older, etc. It would have cost us more but lasted longer for sure. Thanks

Nice! I am working on a mini one now. 14" for Gnome village. Thanks to you! Now I know how to "cheat the center" with mild stength.

Thanks--great video. Boil the wood hub in paraffin for authentic old time bearing that lasts a very long time.

Hey Phillip yes the are and I honestly don't remember the exact size. If you go to our channel and search waterwheel yo will see that we have made a few different versions and you may get some more details that you might be looking for. I want to say the pipe size was around 1" but again I can' remember.

The first two cross pieces could be half laped and glued. Stronger joint. Also you need wood that won't rot. You need treated wood, cedar, and hemlock.thT

i agree with your suggestions and would totally do the lap joint. treated wood would be better but we had a super tight budget for materials on this project so we got the cheapest wood and treated it to help last a little longer. it was a prop that really only needed to last a year or so and then whatever happens happens. anyone building this and wants it to last should take the steps you mentioned. thanks for the comment =)
