We Need Better Narratives About Gender

It’s a time of contrast and contradiction for gender queerness in America: At the same time that about 5 percent of Americans under 30 identify as transgender or nonbinary, over 20 states have passed some sort of restriction on gender-affirming care for children. In 2023 alone, over 550 anti-trans bills have been introduced across the country.
The political push and pull can overshadow a broad spectrum of rich questions and possibilities that queer culture opens up - about how we think about identity and social categories, how we structure our communities and support networks, our anxieties about having children who are different from ourselves, how gender norms shape all bodies and how difficult it can be to make big life decisions.
Masha Gessen is a staff writer at The New Yorker who has thought deeply about many of these questions. “Gender is something that happens between me and other people,” they say. In this conversation, the guest host Lydia Polgreen asks Gessen, who identifies as trans and nonbinary, what the social and political shift around gender has looked like to them in the past few decades.
They discuss why gender has captured the conservative imagination, how L.G.B.T.Q. activists have fallen into the “regret trap,” what it means to understand gender expression as a choice rather than something biologically determined, why Gessen prefers a liberatory framework focused on protecting freedoms-to rather than freedoms-from when thinking about L.G.B.T.Q. issues, how gender-affirming care is not just for trans people, how the making of the 1999 movie “The Matrix” reflects the rapid social change around trans visibility in the United States, the anti-L.G.B.T.Q. sentiments that made Gessen decide to leave their home in Russia,how gender conformity is social contagion and more.
This episode was hosted by Lydia Polgreen, a New York Times Opinion columnist and a co-host on the weekly Opinion podcast “Matter of Opinion.” She previously served as the managing director of Gimlet, a podcast studio at Spotify, and as the editor in chief of HuffPost.

I am looking forward to this conversation. I am a gay man who has come very far in my understanding of non-binary/trans issues. The word queer for me has such a connotation of "I reject all the rules, and all the expectations and really place my authenticity above seeking to be part of society." That scares me to the core. Perhaps I am just a weak person and I need the support of society to feel safe. I cannot go it alone. I will present the way I see things. I think that gender is stretchy enough to allow for really "effeminate" men and really "mannish" women (society needs to stop forcing men and women into a small box) and that transition or non-binary would really only be for people who clearly are in pain because their outside does not match their inside.

Male and female is determined by gender located in the soul not sex characteristics and Matthew 19:12 says God prefers same-sex marriage and confirms transgender people are born that way. Jesus was transgender, a female man returning as a female woman in a relationship with male woman. Fake ministers all over the world know they are supposed to be repenting to stop the fires, wars, shootings, floods, Covid, etc by returning the money and telling everyone same-sex marriage is not a sin but they would rather continue killing people than repent. Anyone that doesn't stay out of the fake churches will soon die with the wicked. I am Elijah and I am the forerunner to the return of Jesus.

To compare a teenage who would undergo a surgery that mutilate her/his body irreversibly; make them infertile and having to take hormones for the rest of their lives and likely have a shorter lifespan not to mention the multitude of complications and difficulties in their lives, with some teenager who make a choice to join the army when they reach 18, is utterly wrong. However I get the point. The point is that people should have the freedom to do whatever they believe is correct at the moment with their body and their lives. In fact I agree. ( it’s like commit an assistant suicide, or taking hard drugs, or have an abortion after 35 weeks, you can do whatever you feel like with you body.) But , leave this choice away from children. Give them the informed choice after they reach adulthood. One last thing. I agree with the guest comment. That is a lot more girls would like to become boys if they have the opportunity to. Imagine that. Bye

People don't suddenly become capable of adult decision-making at 18 or even 25, when the prefrontal cortex is commonly thought to have completed development. The brains of ppl on the autism spectrum are thought to take as much as another three years to finish maturing. But beyond the age-line question, there are many reasons to not allow ANYONE to become gender-medicalized. Just as we don't allow doctors to harm mentally ill patients who want limb amputation. We all should learn to live within the constraints of otherwise healthy, sexed bodies, using whatever mental health supports we need.

Regarding body dysphoria and the section in this narrative that addresses rhinoplasty surgery for teenagers: Maybe more young people can avoid bullying and rhinoplasty surgery … who knows … but let’s try to make sure that the decisions that young people make about their bodies are not because society it pressuring them to conform and feel as if they need a “perfect nose”. Maybe their nose is perfect, just as it is. Exploration of our personal expression and identity is a normal part adolescents but maybe some serious regrets can be avoided if we have the ability to find allies and friends who accept us, just as we are. Young people who are bullied need support to help build the courage to not be intimidated by the bullies. Why should we feel forced to turn the knives on ourselves? When I remember the story of the teenage girl who underwent a rhinoplasty, I can’t help but wonder what the bullies targeted next?: The color of her skin? Her weight? The shape of her eyes? Her stutter? Maybe we all need to pull together and support our right to live free of fear, no matter how we look or how we identify. Maybe the bullies should not get the satisfaction of seeing more rhinoplasties.

May the next narrative on gender please formally include guest speakers who do not self-identify with the boxes of “cis” or “transgender.” Why not invite narratives that include the voices of Non-transitioners, Re-transitioners and De-transitioners. I think the perspectives and personal experiences of people who have survived puberty (despite severe body/gender dysphoria and bullying) should feel supported in telling their story too. Life may have difficulties that seem overwhelming but many gender-non-conforming people are often resilient and live full and meaningful lives without using hormones or surgeries. There are many different experiences and personal decisions that involve our own bodies should be respected. Many people from previous generations have explored the concepts of gender and identity but ultimately embraced themselves and their bodies through feminism (or other philosophies) despite the social pressure to fit in. I would like to see conversations on gender open up to invite more voices to include all diverse experiences and to acknowledge many people find ways to grow confident, resilient and deeply content despite the fact that they are (often) marginalized and undervalued by fearful, deeply insecure and intolerant people. Most people who are routinely silenced by attempts at exclusion or who are habitually underrepresented in conversations are marginalized because their sex, race, religion, ethnicity, class, misperceived ability , sexual orientation and/or gender expression, appearance or other measure that is not dominant within an overwhelmingly restrictive culture. Non-transitioners are rarely acknowledged but most everyone knows a “tough and outspoken” woman or a “delicate and soft-spoken” man who refuse to bow down to societal pressures of gender conformity. One might argue that they cannot mask their natural self-expression. Most people know someone who has survived bashing but stood their ground and kept standing up in the face of injustice. Stories of courage are filled with activists who risked their lives so that future generations could move forward. Throughout history there have been leaders who worked for human rights and gender equality for everyone. Not all of them matched what was expected of their sex and yet, some of them persisted, healed the feelings of shame and grew confident and ok with being “different” … for being comfortable with themselves, for being fully human. We all have so much to offer. We do not need to subscribe to the exact same perspectives or identical narratives to support equality, respect, safety, freedom , human rights and love. The LGBTQ+ Community has enough room for respectful and meaningfully(even contrasting) dialogue about what sex and gender means to each member of our community. No one should live in fear. No sincere person should be silenced or pushed out of the narrative. It’s a rainbow … right?

If I truly believed that I was the King of England and demanded that everyone address me as "Your Majesty" I would be considered insane. Well, it is less deranged for me to believe that I am the King of England than it is for me to believe that I am a woman. You don't treat mental illness with hormones and surgery--and you certainly don't treat kids with these.

Masha's theory as to why gender is such a hot topic now is incredibly stupid. Seeing Lia Thomas compete in the women's category in sports did more to hurt the trans cause in America than any other incident. The unfairness of that situation and the lies being told contradicting all the scientific evidence regarding male physical advantage made people angry. Then having the religious gender ideology being taught in schools bothered a lot of people who believe in the separation of religion and state. Then asking women to be naked in locker rooms with males. I could go on....

The Academic arrogance here is nauseating. Flimsy assertions spoken about as if they are fact, and then using flimsy assertions to back up their flimsy assertions. The language of the gender ideologues is designed to be a locked room and only they have the key. As soon as people stopped using their language they lost control and hence, this conversation. That is the key - don't use the language of the gender ideologues. Edit: That Matrix idea would still be "nixxed" because it would bomb at the box office.

Best narrative about gender: Male Female Any questions?
@andeya4543

I listened to this podcast on my feed, and knew of Masha, and heard them voice some things that match my experience, and others that stretched my thinking. I wanted to send it to a friend, and found the NYT page behind a paywall, then found it was on KZfaq. Then I started reading the comments. My goodness, almost all of you seem so angry about people being different from you and getting to be who they are. Of COURSE the vast majority of people are born as one sex or the other, female or male - none of the angry posters have brought up intersex people, notably. And/but some of us find we prefer to live as a man, though we were born with a female body and raised female, and vice versa. It just feels better, we like it, it feels right, we have less depression and anxiety after we transition. And some of us find joy and freedom in the new possibility of existing in an in-between space in some way, or seeing if we can make y'all guess, or switching back and forth, going out as female in some situations and male in others. All "transness" means is that there are some of us who are like this -- so those of you who think it doesn't really exist, that trans people don't really exist, well, here we are. It seems like there are more of us than there were before because it's actually OK to be trans in this unusual time and place in human history, and to expect others to respect that we are, use the names and pronouns we want, and not hate or hurt us. So more of us are admitting, to ourselves and you, that we are like this. Consider why us being in the same world as you bothers you so much - really, so what! aren't there more important problems in the world? And consider whether you could instead lead with compassion and care for other humans.
