A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores the relationship between a mother and her evil son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller).
Eva and Kevin begin their strained relationship literally from birth. At 15 years old, Kevin escalates the stakes when he commits a horrifying act, leaving Eva to grapple with her feelings of grief and responsibility, as well as the ire of the community-at-large. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores nature vs. nurture on a whole new level as Eva's own culpability is measured against Kevin's innate evilness. Ramsay's masterful storytelling simultaneously combines a provocative moral ambiguity with a satisfying and compelling narrative, which builds to a chilling, unforgettable climax.

I'm young and have no kids myself but the ideas in the this story, that you can't connect with your own kid, that he hates you and that you feel largely to blame all scare the hell out of me. It's like giving birth to your worst enemy who you are left to care for 24/7. Nightmare.

+bloodyrose1985 there actually really was nothing wrong with the kid... the doctor knew it and so did the mother. there was no medical solution to her problem, he was too young for therapy and didn't even display any signs of needing some kind of therapy to the doctor. if you haven't noticed, kevin only acted antisocially towards his mom when no one else was around to see. he loved seeing her suffer which is central to understanding his actions. doctors see this kind of shit all the time, parents worried about their child development and freaking out thinking there may be something wrong. reinforcing their worries when there is no medical evidence usually makes things a whole lot worse for everyone.

I loved this scene! It gave us a piece of Kevin that I think most people could relate to. This part made me chuckle so much aside from the characters. Also, I feel Ava didn’t want Kevin from day one. You see her crying in an early scene about getting pregnant. Kevin was the end of her traveling and her ‘fun.’ She probably felt she had to keep him and ever say since then, she’s regretted having Kevin. Of course she grew during the movie when she was actually ready for kids and had the daughter.

What this movie (and the book its based on) do really well is flirt with the age-old question, is psychopathy nature or nurture? On one hand, we see a mother desperately trying to get her baby to engage with her, while he stares at her with hatred. Surely a sign he was evil even then? But on the other hand, listen to the thinly veiled frustration in his mother's voice. He knows his mother dislikes him and she's only pretending to like him because that's what mothers do. Who WOULDN'T be psychologically disturbed by the knowledge that your own mother dislikes and fears you?
@GosieKin
@GosieKin Жыл бұрын
I'm not a professional psychiatrist but my gut tells me: nature. I've worked with kids all my professional life and I've seen a few cases where the kid of two fantastic loving parents was dark, evil at the core, too conniving for their age and remained so, regardless of how much support, care and good energy he got from everyone around him. I know it will sound weird but it is possible to have creeps around a 3 and a 4 year old. Years later, when old enough they were finally assessed - and what do you know? We, the teachers, were right.
@Fulscript
@Fulscript 3 ай бұрын
@@GosieKin you don't know their lives at home, the small details, their history, anything. as a teacher you barely get a small image of what they're parents are. Guess what? parents put the best image possible to their kids' teachers. Your "gut" is "prejudice".

he could hear very well. he was just observing why his mother is so abrazal. She had told him the other day, "Mommy was very happy before little Kevin came along. Now every morning mommy wakes up wishing she were in France!" Imagine what this would have done to the kid's psyche, especially the one who sees a mother everyday frowning to even hug or kiss him. He is angry, like really angry on her. In one of the later scenes he says about his upcoming sister, "what if I don't like her?" His mom says, "Well then you will get used to her." He sniffs while breaking those crayons and says, "Just because we get used to something doesn't mean we like it. You don't like me!" If I were his mother I would have jumped and hugged the baby and asked him million times what made him think so? And that's what Kevin must be expecting, the love. But Eva says, "Well clearly we all get used to people we don't like!" Kevin was a brave boy. He did not shed a tear. He just sucked up to that. Or maybe not because the "bad seed" was already sown into his tender mind.

Since the beginning she never wanted Kevin and made sure to let him know about it, as the first contact with the world, a mother-child relationship is so very important. On the other hand she welcomed and loved her daughter, no surprise the girl was loving and happy. In no way I blame the mother it’s just that I feel like Kevin and Eva were in constant collision, till the very end they were having a war against each other...

I’m a firm believer that one of the main causes of being a psychopath isn’t the way you are brought up, but how your DNA is wired. He was born a psychopath. He liked seeing his mum suffer when he wouldn’t throw the ball back. And if I’m right, he didn’t care that his mum didn’t like her, because my assumption is that the feelings were mutual

I dont think that is true. The baby sister loves Kevin and want his attention and his father spends time with him shooting arrows and stuff. They just don't see the evil in him, which Tilda does, but that doesn't mean they don't care. They just don't believe it to be so. I do not think that the doctor scene was planned to be so. I think that little boys don't like to get things in their ear so to help the actor not to cry they just didn't check the ear proper.

Did Eva want something to be wrong with him? She almost seemed upset because there WASN'T something wrong with Kevin...I don't know. Kind of seems like it, or is it just me?

She was probably just searching for some explanation as to why he was so different to 'normal' children, it would be reassurance for her that it wasn't just her being a bad mother or something like that

Sherlock Watson Yeah, she did want something to be wrong with him. She mentions this in the book, that she wished for a temporary illness, disease, defect, anything that would rouse in her sympathy for her son, and in turn bring forth her maternal instincts.

Yes she wanted something to be wrong with him because he wasn't listening to her when she asked him to do a simple task she did not want for her son to be a psychopath. I mean would anybody want their son or daughter to be a psycho?? She always knew there was something wrong with Kevin...."We need to talk about Kevin" gives you the context clues in the title of the movie. She just wanted their to be some other reason and that she did not want to believe or accept the fact that Kevin needed some serious help

Well that guy is also NOT a doctor. I suspect they mightn't have wanted some random actor poking shit into a little kid's ear.
