Played the Demo twice to completion! The game feels great, the battleflow is often as slow or as fast as it needs to be. Some units can feel broken, but you always have a counter. Example: There's this time-challenge where there's a group of gladiators with 70 HP and heal 30 after being hit AND they're backed up by shamans that reduce your offense. It feels impossible, until you realize that a certain ability completely counters this strategy. It's honestly genius given it's pretty early that you encounter this enemy.

I love this game. Auto-battle is straight up old school Ogre Battle games. Sure, Ogre Battle was sort of a niche series during the 16-bit era, but games like this have become rare in modern times. Especially games with a larger budget and wasn't made by an indie dev.

The game allows for different strategies to help win a battle, there is one during the demo in which the characters tell you that without a Magick user, defeating the hoplites would be very difficult, so I kept exploring, found a sellsword named Berenice, completed her sidequest that enabled a fort to be open, there I could recruit a warrior with a warhammer that is strong against heavyarmored units and with that plus a shaman that debuffed the enemies, I was able to conquer that fortified town in under 10 minutes and without having a Magick user.

It is really nice to see a SRPG in the vein of Ogre Battle/Soul Nomad (which doesn't get nearly enough appreciation) as opposed to the more typical Final Fantasy Tactics style. And the demo for this is seriously excellent if you are at all on the fence about the game.

The art and character design make this a must play. Strategy RPG is just the icing on the cake.

This game looks really fun! I loved Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64 and it looks like the people at Vanillaware did as well. When I either finally can afford a PS5 or else the game comes to PC, I will definitely pick this up. You mentioned Soul Nomad as another game that uses this battle system and I would add that Disciples 1 and 2 on PC also has this system, though it is in combination with an overworld that is like classic Heroes of Might and Magic.

Gives a lot of Grand Kingdom vibes with the story/battle map. And tales of Hearts R had a similar conditional action map to influence the actions of your teammates. SUPER useful to keep ranged characters away from the enemy and ensure they just attacked from a decent range as long as they had the mp or ensure your healers would always heal a character before dying.

Yeah gonna pick up the game today, the demo was so fun and deep with the different units you can pair up in a platoon.

Cant wait to play it today, after playing through the demo multiple times expert was rough but only on a few bosses and early on cause its getting used to mechs. And the conditions settings make it real easy to make sure you are hitting who you want and if you want specific skills to be activated on certain times best example I can put is I'm running the unwavering lance and I want to use true thrust to counter those pesky scouts but looking at its damage i really dont want to use it unless there is a scout on the field so i just set it for only activate if the oppoment has one and target it. while if not just roll with assaulting lance cause in general it does more damage with the opportunity of acting again. One thing i do gotta say managing gear is kind a pain for accessory slots since i can easily see there being way too many options and trying to find the one your looking for specifically.

how does replayability or post game look? does it look like dlc could be possible or does the game feel full enough without it?

I love that you can get into and win areas while being at a heavy level disadvantage. And while I love the gimmick of being able to do things in the over world that have an in-mission effect in Cornia, I don't see that same mechanic anywhere in the other kingdoms. Unless I am missing these things, it's a gimmick I wish the other nations had.

I knew it, and thanks to your review, Eric, I'm now totally sure: The gameplay here is very similar to that of Aselia the Eternal and Seinarukana. 1. You have to build parties/platoons, geared towards a mid to long term objective during each battle. 2. For that reason, making a "scouting run" before actually committing to a path is better. That way, you'll know what is waiting for you (unless the enemies are spawned at random, which would be prettttty nasty indeed). 3. Because of the above reason, it is better to experiment with the skills of each unit, so you know which position is better for them and against what. And be open to unorthodox approaches, like putting a mage on the front for specific purposes. 4. I don't know how unit skills work in here (yet), but if they followed the Aseila/Seinarukana formula, each unit will have a set of Offensive, Defensive and Support skills, and pairing them with the "action conditions" in the right situations is the key to really succeed in this game. I hope this game does well so more games of this style are made, since these type of strategy games are very cool to play. Also, I recommend the other two games, Aselia the Eternal, and its sequel, Seinarukana. They are strategy visual novels with interesting stories and cool gameplay, though know that they are long and hard as nails (also, as proper VNs, with different endings, depending on heroines). Still, very good games.

would you really strictly recommend story difficulty for a newbie? I ask because my only experience with this is fire emblem awakening, and i recall my issue with the genre was that story mode was braindead, but anything above would beat my ass, I'm just wondering if medium is passable and I just need to grow some patience :')

I got the Monarch Edition of this game and I'm glad I did. So far I'm loving the game. Only shame is that it released so close to FF7 Rebirth and I was too deep into that one to just jump into UO immediately. Wasn't so sure about the automatic aspect of battles at first, but a few hours in and the game has won me over.

the simple fact is it was worth the wait. I didn't know about it until about a month before it's release, so I wasn't stuck waiting that long, but this games consumed my life the past week or two since it released, and honestly, it's put Vanillaware on the radar for me, 110%. Absolutely Loving this game though.

After FF7 Rebirth, this is next on my plate. Can't wait!

The gambit system from FF12 returns! As someone who enjoyed the gambit system, it actually looks like fun. My main concern is that the game would be too easy to cheese like the original Ogre Battle. In Ogre Battle your main character would get a random special ability. There was one ability that damaged every enemy on the screen and was slightly overpowered. You could then put all the strongest characters in your army together with your main character and just steamroll every enemy in the game with just one unit. In turn you would over level your party which just fed back into the snowball, effectively making the entire game trivial.

Just wished to have more control of the character's actions. Kinda feels like a Scopely clone.

I was super excited for this one. But I wasn't expexting not being in control in the fight. It really threw me off. But I'll have to give it a second chance later.

I bit it and got the monarch edition. Aint no regrets here.

I thought the FFXII “gambit” system was perfect for this kind of game. In fact, it felt more appropriate here than it did in FFXII. I loved being able to “program” my characters to act in optimized ways, but a lot of that stuff makes sense to me. For others it can be overwhelming, but 90% of the game is won on unit composition, so most of it can be safely ignored.

I also think this game just unnecessarily complex. Like the conditioning thing is good if they fully commit on RTS. For they make it half turn based it just feel weird. Like why do they need adding so much complexity? Control on menu also weird in switch. Often i miss click when i want to reposition and adjust their skill. If they keep it more simple this game is very fun actually.

The tactics conditions system is definitely a little too much. I got tired testing all the different tactics in countless mockbattles.

I'm worried the name "Unicorn Overlord" will limit sales quite a bit. We might be used to hearing it now, but even I thought it was a joke the first time I heard of it. And going further back, I never played Odin Sphere because it conjured images of pinball or "Odama" (on Gamecube) in my mind 😂

I completely disagree on the conditions for battle. You can be as in depth as you want or not. It's fine if you leave it to lady luck, but it's not a bad thing to allow the players that want to control to that level the ability to do so. You can do it or not as you want, so why say it's a bad thing to allow people who want to do that the ability to do so. While I understand not liking a story point or game mechanic you are forced to interact with, I don't understand hating a mechanic that is entirely optional and only serves to make someone else's enjoyment greater.

I'll give it another try, because after about 1.5 hours I put it down. Seemed too generic. Not trashy enough lmao!!! If i'm being honest!! lol

Finished it yesterday. Such a gem. From the start till the finish it kept interesting and engaging. Hopefully Fire Emblem will go this direction some day.
