Youthforia markets its foundation shades as having a neutral undertone, in order to be adaptable. Bc they can't create a big enough shade palette yet, to account for diff undertones. And a lot of cosmetic products in general are just neutral - not warm or cool. The problem here was the tone, it should be brown-based not black-based. If it's black-based, you can't see the subtle undertones anyway.

Actually that’s not how that would work. Because the original base of it wasn’t mixed with several different colors, mixing a color into the pure black wouldn’t be the same as making the shade with different undertones. Yes it would slightly change the color of the shade but it would mix out to be more of a grey toned shade because of the base being all pure black. That’s the same reason why painters mix their blacks the majority of the time instead of using blacks straight from paint tubes.

Could it not be mixed with another foundation shade to darken it? Then the extra tones come from the real colour foundation, but that can be darkened 'to taste' using this, so anyone of a shade that isn't serviced can get a 'right colour but too light shade' foundation plus this and make it fit. Could be wrong, obviously not an issue I've had to handle personally (white and don't use makeup regularly), but that sounds feasible.

@@konijntjeveer7075 yes it can. You can even turn black paint into a warm deep brown All you need to do is not only mix in something with a light base but also a bright colour. Red undertone = red, yellow undertone = yellow Get yourself one of those elf color correctors in red, mix a brown foundation with a bit of the black and a bit of red As an example. Foundation is no different than paint, to get brown you mix black + orange + white If you add more black and not more orange you'll end up with an ashy tone, you need to add orange (or red/yellow depending on the undertone) In order to darken but avoid ashiness That being said it feels like too much of a hassle to actually go through instead of trying to find a foundation that matches

It’s why artists as they gain experience will highlight or display darkness in shades of brown, blue and purple. True black is a very rarely occurring colour in nature. This shade of foundation will never work on any complexion no matter how dark. Even the darkest skin hues have undertones of blue, purple, red, and brown. No one is searching for a reason to be mad, the brand themselves gave consumers the reason, it was an insensitive release that was made without even prior shade matching with an existing model. She made it, had back lash, tried to hunt down a model and could find no one who it matched. You can even find videos of persons testing it for shade deepening as you suggested, and realizing it was a lost cause.

I get your point, but wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy a foundation that matches them then? Black pigment tends to make colors grey to ashy. In art, we avoid using it as it'll turn everything muddy. So I dont think it would be great at mixing either. And if you have to start mixing it with more colors to not make it look grey, then you might as well just make the foundation from scratch

something tells me this is just a marketing strategy to get people talking about the brand. as soon as people hear there’s one shade that’s so dark it doesn’t even match the darkest skin tones, people will likely imagine they have a gigantic range of shades available. hence, more people looking into the brand and more buyers. but that doesn’t take away from it being pretty inconsiderate and a low effort on their part

Those who haven't struggled to find their shade in foundation may not understand how offensive this truly is for some individuals. This comment goes for the fairest of skin tones to the deepest. Yesterday a video popped up for me of a young lady who has to use primer as her mascara. If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have thought it. But the primer dries clear not white. I personally don't understand why this brand didn't try to relieve this for the goth market?

It could be used for face painting, like drawing temporary designs such as flowers and butterflies on the skin? Like an alternative to face paint (which can be quite drying on the skin). There are other non-skin-tone foundations that exist now, blue, purple, pink, green etc so they would have been better targeting that market rather than trying to appeal to a demographic they clearly didn't even research or consider during the formulation process of this product.

I buy white foundation so I can fix all of my shades in fall as I get lighter, and in mid winter I have to lighten the lightest foundation I have. It's probably my most used foundation because I tan so easily that I try to avoid tanning and all my sun exposure is accidental. So I'll buy my summer colour of foundation and it will be too dark by the time it arrives. I always have too dark foundation for a mix in from foundation I bought when I had a tan. And for years I hardly wore foundation because I didn't know white foundation existed

I think it's really great that they have that dark of a foundation. I actually had a friend that was physically black. Their skin was extremely extremely ebony black And they said it was always a struggle to get foundation, and in fact, they typically never wore makeup because of it. I have a good feeling that this new foundation would actually fit their skin color perfectly. It's not very common to have that dark of a skin color but there are still people out there that have it and so for a Make-up company to actually have that dark of a foundation is in my opinion, amazing and in no way insulting.

Unless your friend some how didn’t have blood its quite literally scientifically impossible for this shade to fit her. It has no undertone it’s just pure black in a bottle and no matter how deep skinned a person is they will have an undertone. You can’t even mix this shade without it turning grey. This shade is offensive for that very reason they clearly didn’t consult any Black models with deep skin tones and instead decided to just throw black in a bottle and expect them to accept scraps while the other shades get actual care and attention put into theirs.
