Pete and Steve had a real special chemistry. Pete was a great soloist in his own right. Phil and Steve were good, but Phil tended to take alot of the solos away from Steve. Plus, after Phil joined Def Lep just did not solo near as much as they did when it was Steve and Pete. And you can throw out Pyromania, because every fan knows that Pete wrote all of Phil's guitar parts for that album before he was fired. Phil just played Pete's guitar parts when they recorded the album.
@KingsFanForever
@KingsFanForever 2 ай бұрын
@@dathorndike4908 I believe that most of Pyromania was already recorded and completed when Phil Collen joined the band. Mutt Lange only needed Phil to provide guitar solos for five of the ten tracks on that record (Rock Rock Til You Drop, Photograph, Stagefright, Foolin, and Rock of Ages). Apparently Pete Willis had recorded solos for those five tracks but Mutt Lange was not happy with them and had Phil redo them.

It's all real to me. Bands evolve. In the early days they were great but not so different. Pyromania saw them take on their unique style imho.
@JRcomments
@JRcomments 2 ай бұрын
The first two albums were before poser status, Pyromania was the transition album and everything after is poser status. You had to live as a teen in the late 70's early 80's to understand the word poser, a HS word often tied to going after commercial success by giving up its edge it once had. Bands like Rush , PF, and AC/DC to name a few were never poser.
@pauldunn5978
@pauldunn5978 2 ай бұрын
@JRcomments I was born in 1965. I'm very familiar with the period you are talking about. All through the Night was a raw and quite untidy album that appealed to hard rockers. High and dry was a bit more polished . Then came Pyromania and Hysteria. Yes , more commercial and very polished but that's the direction they chose so good on them. Fans might make a band but they don't own them . Leppard made themselves appealing to a much wider audience and thats what seems to get under the skin of many early fans. I'm an early fan. I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon in '81 and '83 and '87. Then Earls Court in '92 and another 4 times since. I've enjoyed every time, probably the Hysteria tour the best. They've evolved . Some don't like it. Many do. Including me.

Story time. I was a band/drama geek in high school. In my senior year (1985), I was in a play we took to All State Drama up in Morgantown (WV…at WVU). It was about a 2 1/2-3 hour trip at the time because it was mostly 2 lane roads. My buddy/stage manager/sound tech/sarcasm dealer was driving. This album (cassette) was in his player. It was time to change cassettes but all he had out besides High n Dry was Scorpions Blackout and Eddie Murphy Raw. He told me to reach behind my seat and grab his cassette case. Not there, dude. Thinking it might be deeper than I could reach, he asked our the freshman stage hand and co-stars to check. Yeah, the 80’s, where you let two seniors drive unsupervised with two freshmen to a college for a school sponsored event. Our two drama coaches and the girls met us up there. Anywho, they couldn’t find it either. Then it hit him. He was loading it up and left it in his room. So, this cassette was on heavy rotation and we had Eddie Murphy’s bits memorized (WTF is goony-googoo?). Side note about All State. We won 2nd for one act comedy and I got named to All State cast with the chance to go to a week long convention. But, I was leaving for basic and had to turn it down. So, while I don’t regret any of my decisions, this album always takes me back to a point where I can say “hmmmm…I wonder what woulda happened…?” Cheers.

Love this deeper Def Leppard cut. This song is really about someone struggling with cocaine addiction-- all the references to making him blind and stumbling, and that mirrors were/are used to chop up coke lines-- the band pretty notoriously struggled with alcohol and coke pretty heavily, even this early in their careers. This song is so stunning in it's unflinching look into that world, from such a (at the time) young band.
