Planning the season in cycling is essential to carry out training as optimally as possible. To do this we must consider the tests (preparation or objective) that we will develop during the season and know which ones we want to reach with a peak shape. In this case, all the preparation revolves around the Bearded Vulture but with stops at the Orbea Monegros, at the La Rioja Bike Race and at the Orbea Gran Fondo de Vitoria.
With this in mind, as well as weekends with personal events, Adrián Castillo, our coach and expert in sports physiology, has prepared a season based on inverse planning: we have given high importance to high intensity training - anaerobic resistance and aerobic power- to go, gradually, to a decrease in intensity increasing the volume.
A great advantage of this methodology is that it adapts much better to the climate. In winter, when it has been colder and there have been fewer hours of light, we have prioritized strength training and we have carried out short and intense sessions, mostly in roller. Now that we are in the spring, with more hours of light, we will begin to increase the volume and accumulate meters of altitude. Having reached peaks of aerobic power and anaerobic capacity, we can reach a higher speed in ports and sections where we need to increase the pace of the race.
We plan cycles of 3-4 weeks where the intensity and volume are high, reducing the training load to the fifth week in order to respect the principle of supercompensation and the body is able to assimilate the work done. We, to complete this preparation, use Training peaks, surely one of the most complete training applications for the perfect integration of all the training variables.
It should be noted that in this process of sports evolution we started training with a heart rate monitor, as most amateur cyclists do. Since a month ago we passed to the potentiometer and our improvement has been increased significantly: the power we exercise when pedaling is measurable and quantifiable in its entirety, which does not happen with the pulse, since it can vary by many factors (a simple catarrh is enough to alter the metrics). There are several potentiometers in the market. We chose Stages for their quality and for the accuracy in the measurement.
As Adrian says, training with power is training with science.
