I was born within days of Congress passing the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, which sent regular US Army troops to Vietnam. I remember watching the Watergate trials as a kid and wondering what the hell was wrong with the country. Little did I imagine how screwed up we were then and how much more exponentially screwed up we would become. Living in a dyed-in-the-wool red state as I do, I shudder to think about what comes next. At least the thought that I will probably be dead within the next 20 years or so gives me some comfort. At that point, I'll be beyond caring. Until then, the existential nightmare continues. By all means, slap a band-aid on our crumbling democracy and vote your conscience, vote for reason, vote for compassion, vote for the future, because your grandchildren's lives depend on it.

Although this was painful to watch I think it’s important that we remember what we went through and how we felt during that election and how President Trump acted. Disrespecting the office. Caring only for his fame and having fun riling people up for his personal pleasure. He’s a sick guy. I don’t understand how so many Americans couldn’t see his pathology, his Vanity and instability before the first election, let alone after it. I regret not watching his stuff religiously back then; I only got into it recently because Sis was watching it and trying not to laugh late at night, and SHE got into it because Dad kept talking about it to her during her visiting him before he passed away in December 2021. For the Republican Party to threaten Americans that holding this criminal accountable will lead to Civil War is akin to approval of a Civil War. It feels good to get those laughs again, though. However, the live show he did on January 6th could only have been done in the storage room. Even if the jokes were of the "funny because it is sad" variety, it was not a time for live belly laughs. Granted, it kind of is still too soon to laugh about it, but there is enough distance for some people. Plus, that January 6th live show was the most angry I had ever seen Stephen. I thought the night Trump made that speech right before it was called for Biden (which Stephen had enough honor not to show one frame of) was the angriest he had been, but oh how none of us knew how much worse it would get.

I’m kind of expecting some future HBO limited series about all the “behind closed doors” events between Election Night 2020 and January 6th showing just what exactly went down in the final days of the Trump White House and everything he tried to desperately hang onto power. It’s insane just how much we’re learning about not just the former President but all those who enabled him during those two months in the lead up to January 6th, including all the stuff we haven’t seen or learned of yet. Between the January 6th committee and all the books written by former staff members, there’s already a lot.

These monologues were special for me. During the worst of Covid that year, I took my dog for run around at my grandmother's house for her walks. I would sit on her back porch, with a sunset mountain in view, laughing hard at Stephen's jokes. Those were cold, dark days in some ways, but humor like this kept it going, especially with the election ending on a good note (before January, anyhow). And I can still feel being back there watching this again. Thank you, Stephen!

I’ve got to be honest, my favorite part that literally had me laughing out loud was the bit about swearing in BTS as president, lol. If it was up to ARMY, they would be. @@brianburgess1873 Seth is pretty good, I really enjoy his Closer Look segment. Fallon is eh, never could stand him tbh, only watch him for the interviews, but even those are sometimes hard to watch. Kimmel actually has alot of heart and makes me laugh alot, especially Guillermo. But Stephen is the best in the game currently, imo. He has an honest quality about him and humor that's really unexpected, especially when doing the Meanwhile bit. Some of those have made me laugh so hard I've started to cry. He really has great writers and the band is exceptional. It's a shame Jon Batiste had to leave this past summer, but I'm excited for what's to come from him. 😊
