In this video we are comparing the stock Jensen P10R Alnico speaker to a Celestion Alnico Gold (both 10") in a Fender Princeton Reverb '64 Hardwired Re-Issue. The stock Jensen sounds GREAT in this Princeton Reverb, but can we make it sound even better?

Thank you for this! For the purpose of comparison, however, I'd much prefer to compare sound vs sound, instead of going through several sounds before the comparison happens, it's rather harder to keep track and compare a sound when you are fed other sounds. Just a thought!

I have an early 64 Blackface non reverb Princeton that I acquired about 1970. It has a reissue 12” Vox blue that I put in it about 1990 or so. It made a huge difference over the stock fender 10” speaker. It records well, even bass at pedestrian volume.

The second i bought my PRRI, I removed the inefficient ("crap") Speaker with a Warehouse G10C/S, a true WGS original, has become a favorite of players the world over. With its smooth cone and larger motor, it offers a slightly rounder top end and smooth breakup when driven hard while maintaining the punch and clarity you already love in a 10" speaker. It's really great for taming the top end in bright amps with its warm sound and depth in tone. The G10C/S also remains one of the most pedal friendly tens in our line. So whether you are trying to beef up your vintage combo or build the perfect tone platform, the G10C/S is the place to start.

That is funny to me because my first step away from US-voiced amps was to run my Super Reverb RI through a 1x12 open back cabinet with a V30 purely as an experiment. I liked it better than the original Fender cab. I later sold the Super Reverb and settled on early Marshall type amps (through same V30 cabinet) for a few years before moving on to Vox/Celestion Blue after recording with one in a studio. This was before KZfaq, so I had no A/B audio guidance. I still prefer Vox to this day. That was a 10 year journey that one could easily travel in a single afternoon on KZfaq these days. Times have changed!

Love this demo! Personally, the gold is my favorite speaker… period. That said, listening to both of these, it’s pretty apparent why a lot of boutique amp makers will load a 2x12 with an alnico/ceramic combo. My cab is a 65 Amps 2x12 w/ Gold/G12H30 combo, and it’s a gorgeous blend. Also, when you made the amp EQ adjustments, it really made the gold shine and highlights the necessity of dialing in a rig to your individual elements, speaker(s) included.

I had the stock Jensen (mine has a C10R in a 65 PRRI) for 6 months and for the life of me couldn't get a tone I liked, using a Les Paul and ~7 pedals. The bass was flub no matter what, the treble was ice picky and brittle. Any overdrive sounded completely fizzled and brittle. I could not even begin to approach a clean sound I liked. I popped a Celestion G10 in there and just, wow, it immediately came to life. The bass response alone with the spring reverb is beautiful. I was playing for an hour, thinking my comp and Timmy were on for slight gain - and I looked down and everything was off. The clean sound was just awesome, allowing me to dial in pedals differently to sound even better. The highs are pulled way down into a nice british scream kind of thing, think Pink Floyd "Time" solo's, etc. Before honestly I could see the Jensen being great for country or jazz maybe (I don't touch the latter), but for blues or classic rock the G10 instantly made me love the Princeton, which I was quickly losing interest in. I have the Eminence GA-SC64 10" coming in to A/B, but I expect that will last 5 minutes honestly - the slight hybrid Princeton with UK speaker, specifically Celestion G10, sounds wonderful to me. Nice awesome bass response, a MUCH punchier mid range, handles gain and OD way better, and way less ice picky highs. It also feels like a tank - the Jensen feeling like a toy. I'm not saying that as people say about all speakers - my wife and I heard the difference immediately. It just rounds it out wayyy better, at least with my applications/playing style/genres. HAVING SAID ALL OF THAT - the Jensen sounds better in your video - different amp/speaker/guitars/pedals/environment/listening on a laptop :D of course.

Ignazio Vagnone here from Jensen Speakers! I know I'm one year late on this video, but hey, it's a great one! The Princeton Rev is such a magic amp... it's one of the key reference amps we use in our R&D lab. The one we have is a 1966, blueprinted and carefully maintained, with a 12" baffle. But we also have a cab with same dimensions and a 10" baffle. The P10R match nicely with the Princeton Reverb, and so does the Celestion Gold. Very different though. If you are mostly interested in cleans and pushed cleans, the Jensen may be more appropriate. If you are more into gainy tones, the Celestion has its typical British rock tone, in large part due to the different cone membrane and the larger Voice Coil (1 3/4", v/s the 1" of the P10R) that delivers that typical midrange aggression. May I say it will sound less "traditionally American", but still it delivers great tones. If you want to have a tighter bass, more midrange focused tone, and still be in the American sonic landscape, you may want to try the Jensen P10Q (1,25" Voice Coil) which sits somewhere in the middle of these two. And if you want to shoot for the top, check out the Jensen Blackbird 10/40... it's like a P10Q on steroids, louder, tighter, bolder. Not by chance, it's been picked by Mesa for the California Tweed 2:20 10" combo, and by Gibson for the Falcon 5 amp... Worth a try, and a check of our new Jensen Tone Sample Library on SoundCloud! soundcloud.com/jensen-speakers/sets Always ready for a nice and nerdy tech/tone chat! Hit me up!

Hello Ignazio! Thanks for commenting and offering your knowledge here - really appreciate that. I've had some more experience with Jensen speakers since making this video :). I bought a vintage '67 Pro Reverb which has the original Jensen 12" speakers in it - those sound amazing. I've also recently picked up a Mesa Boogie California Tweed 40w combo, which has the Blackbird in it. And wow - that is a GREAT sounding speaker. I'm hoping we will be able to feature both of these amps in future videos here on the channel, and we'll be able to let people hear those speakers in action. Here's a question for you (hopefully you'll see this response). Forgive my ignorance on this history of your company - the Jensen speakers in my Pro Reverb from '67 - has the company changed significantly from that period till now? I'm just curious how similar those vintage speakers are to the ones you're currently making. Thanks!

Both speakers work well. I just found out that Jensen also make those bell covers so it looks like the olde ones. Celestion is great but the P10r is no1 for Fender Princetons and there is a P10r (L) which breaks up at lower volume like the older Jensens. If my amp needed more mid then the Celestion has to be the best especially with a Tele/Esquire style Guitar.

Jensen all the way, have that Fender crisp sparkle and raunchy ratty breakup that goes very well with the loose Princeton nature, the gold sound darker like a blanket over, too dampen, too thick and blurry mids, sparkly lush fender clean is gone on a smoky foggy honk, if you don’t like amps going to explode a.k.a cathodyne phase inverter falling apart, put the grid stopper 470k or even 1Meg and will give you the articulation and clarity of any other cranked up blackface but the Magic of the Princeton will be almost all gone…maybe you’re looking for any other blackface long tail phase inverter that a speaker swamp will not provide…

My lifetime make or break project is fitting the Gold 10 into my 1959 Gibsonette.. hell of a task. Even after ungluing the bell, there is soo little precious space left for the speaker to clear the 6V6s.. the slanted speaker board doesnt help it one iota... and who would want to deconstruct that 64 yrs old redwood cabinet.. made with such a natural craftsmanship in those days gone by, that it NEVER rattles, no matter the volume.. and adds to the sound, as if finely tuned ... But I NEED to get the Gold there... in worst case as an extension cab... but then it would not be be my favorite grab and go anymore...

Jensen has a much sweeter jangle like a tweed Bassman; both need to be broken in a lot more to open them up. The Gold gives that kind of dry high sparkle of an AC30 but it doesn’t fit with the mid scoop of a blackface Fender in my opinion.

Then Jensen sounds better in situations where the amp would be played solo. The Gold offers much better recording and live mix tones for those who would be using it in that context. The tighter, narrower focus allows it to occupy a specific part of the mix without spilling over into the keyboards or second guitar turf. In my estimation, this makes for a better overall mix.

I love a compromise; best of both worlds, so to speak. Jensen Blackbird 40. It’s got the quintessential Jensen Fender tone, but with increased headroom, more lower mids, and more upper mids, with a reduced top treble, compared to the P10R. It’s like the increased fatness of the Celestion, but with a touch more bass and treble, more balanced in my opinion. Sounds like a blend of these 2 speakers. I’d accept either one of these choices in a heartbeat- I love the AlNiCo magic! Great video! 🔈🎶

It's interesting because to me, putting a Celestion in actually *stops* it sounding like a Fender. It moves closer to Marshall territory. There's however one Celestion speaker out there that's REALLY common and great on a Princeton (especially if you pop it in a second cabinet or replace the existing baffle), and nobody ever shouts about it. The Vintage 30. Really, really nice with a 65 PRRI.

Based on your clips through my studio monitors I would prefer the Jensen speakers without a single doubt. The Celestions sounds less "alive", almost muddy in comparison. The dynamics of the Jensen are straight into your face whilst the Celestion sounds rather bored and boring...

Thanks so much! That original pack was using the stock Jensen speaker (which sounds very good). We might make another pack using the Alnico gold as well.

@@wttone I actually did a direct Kemper profile of my Princeton with a torpedo captor and threw one of the WT dual mic irs on there and it sounds as good as any of the stock profiles

I THINK A 12 INCH SPEAKER IS THE WAY TO GO ,

I liked the Jensen for cleans. It had that nice top end tinkle and recessed mids i dig. The gold excelled at the overdriven tone. I wonder what a Blue would sound like in that Princeton? I have an Eminence Alessandro Ga-64 12 inch in mine Nice speaker too.

How many hours did you play the speaker to break it in before the demo?

Super interesting, I wasn't expecting it to shift the EQ quite as much. I've got two friends that swapped golds in their princetons so I was thinking about trying it with mine (which is also the '64 HW). Definitely sounds more pdub ready after the swap, but I don't really use the princeton for church stuff so I'm torn. Thanks for the solid vid

the Celestion Gold easily. the Jensen sounded stiff and ratty. brash and some unpleasantness on the top. the Celestion retained all the chime (its an alnico speaker, no shortage of chime there) but was much more pleasant. that riff @4:50 sold me on the Gold. people will vote for the Jensen purely because its whats in their amp. should have been a blind test.

I think the celestion is marginally better, but the jenson is a great speaker, and the difference doesn't justify the cost.

Fender do their homework before offering us their amps. Jensen is a great pick for this amp.

Now 2024 would use the other 10” Celestions like the V-Type. Gold bottom end is too fat. I know because it was a part of my collection. Also many Weber 10” that would be good for PR.
