Being low on transmission fluid has nothing to do with it shifting hard. You may have to put a shift cable on the plow truck.

I would check the shift linkage under the truck. They can get stuck sometimes especially with high miles. Years of salt and corrosion etc. Pretty simple fix if its that

Get out your spray can of wd40 or any type of penetration oil andlube up the shift linkage really good. You might have to take it apart and remove the rust and grim . I bet it will shift like new .( well almost) you need to get away and relax. Have a great time in Mexico. Oh don’t drink the water😂

Please, dont give up on that truck, I have one, very cheap to fix: door handle, typical problem, $20 in ebay, window motor :$30 in ebay, easy to change, keep oil changing, make sure Power steering has oil too!! They go forever, easy to fix!!

The transmission issue is the linkage or bushing. Check fluid level when it is warm and running..
@dondywondy
@dondywondy 7 ай бұрын
Low transmission fluid won't cause a shift lever not to operate; the shift lever just moves a smooth steel rod (with 'grooves') in a smooth bore. The 'clicks', or shift positions, that you feel is the shift detent plate and roller. The actual problem is most likely the shift cable or mechanical linkage. Thanks for sharing your Off Grid Life! I know it takes a lot of work to record, edit and post these videos and I really appreciate it.

I don't know if it would help you or not... but whenever I build a "temporary" ramp like that... and I expect snow and ice... I lay down some extra/old shingles across the ramp. It helps shed the water... it provides traction... they are easily replaceable... and since they heat up in the sun, they do a good job melting LIGHT snow/ice. I've done this 10 or 15 times and it REALLY helps. When you do something more permanent you can always switch it up to something nicer.

Agreed, a small amount of rain/snow/ice means a huge amount of slippery ramps. Some sort of traction is necessary. Comp shingles are a good choice.

I have a 2002 gmc with the same issue. The truck has to be started periodically to circulate the fluids. I start mine, and let it idle for at least 30 minutes. Then the tranny will work. I drive it really slow for about a click, and when it shifts, it has filled the torque convertor from the pan. I now start it about once a month. I have also put a switch to disconnect the battery. The same thing with the power steering.

On the stairs, yeah, nothing is so permanent as what's temporary. I've been imagining a small covered porch entry for the front but maybe it'd be worth the effort for an add-on (airlock) mudroom entry....

Both of you are hard working, careful spending your money, and appear to discuss planned projects. You’re a great example to younger people to show what careful spending and hard work can accomplish. I hope you enjoy your holiday to Mexico - if I remember correctly, Katie’s grandmother lives there. Being a grandmother, I know she’s excited about your visit. Safe travels and take a mask, please!

So, with all that new land, can you relocate the solar panels. There are a lot of tall trees, and wasn’t sure if the sun even shines enough in the field or not. Good luck guys. The only thing I can think of is it is a linkage problem with the transmission. It obviously sticks but it could be bent, a solenoid, or relay. It could also be in the shift lever itself. If it hasn't been maintenanced it could be a clogged filter in the transmission. That will also make it not want to shift. But as hard as the shift lever is I'm thinking it's in the shifting mechanisms not the internal. I'm not a mechanic but have learned a lot from one. Just suggestions to look into. Your place is coming together. There is always so much to do for winter. Lol. I think we are all still doing stuff for winter all the way through winter lol.

Nothing wrong with a smaller pen in a larger enclosure. Keep moving the pen foe new pasture grazing. Smart to cleanup and get ready for winter before you go vacation. Never know what you will encounter on return. Great that you rebuilt the stairs for your dog. Old faithful, 1 more year. Battery, oil change, power steering fluid, hydraulic fluid, coolant, wiper fluid, brake fluid, grease points, wiper blades, clean out the heater fan box. Window and door handles, Mc Giver. Neat hair cut. Go and enjoy your Mexican vacation. Both of you worked hard all year. Take a justly deserved break. Come back refreshed.

Hi Greg , another great video ... On the old truck it might help if you check the shifter rod or cable going from the firewall down to the transmision , it might be slightly worn or rusted and also on each end of that rod there sould be a adjuster to move that rod closer in the direction it needs to be ,, not going into park I would try adjusting the top one to make the rod longer which in turn will pust the shifter mechanism closer to the park position ....
