Downtown Montreal is home to the world's largest underground city also known as RÉSO. All together there are 32 kms/19 miles of tunnels to explore. What is an underground city? It is a network of office towers, malls, restaurants, coffee shops, public transit stations, performing arts venues, a movie theater and other miscellaneous commercial buildings. It's a great way to shelter yourself from the weather while commuting to school or work. Once you get on the train/metro in the morning, you could be potentially be indoors up until the time you get to your stop on the way home. The best part is that you can pick up your coffee/tea/breakfast/lunch/dinner along the way.
Although some of the network is on ground level, most of it winds under the city by way of these tunnels. It is estimated that over 500,000 people use the network every day during the city's long winters. It is climate controlled, well-lit and is arranged in a U shape. You can see a map of the city here: montrealvisitor....
We are native Montrealers and thought we knew the tunnels well but were surprised by the extent of it. It took us a little over two hours to walk from Place-des-Arts to the Eaton Center. That is the main section of the network but it still branches off into many more subsections. Winters here are very cold and spring and fall are very rainy and this is a commuter city. We love our BMW (bus, metro, walk)!

Very useful part of the city especially during the winter where you can avoid going outside with -30c degrees and 30cm plus snow storms during the Montreal winter season.

It appears to be more like an "indoor" city rather than an "underground" city.

Thank I was just thinking that. When you can see the outside through a window it doesn't feel every underground. Reminds me a bit of the enclosed walkways that connect shops and housing in Minneapolis.

I was born and raised in good ol' MTL and moved to rainy Vancouver 21 years ago and I still miss Montreal's metro. Peel Mc Gill 2020 and Guy- Concordia was my second home where I went to Rock on Stock for my heavy metal records back in the 80's!!! I wonder if anyone remembers the cartoons that were painted onto the metro walls in the early days...there were still images all along the walls all continuing as a moving cartoon would on paper flipping a book with many still images at each page. As a young kid I loved looking at the cartoons but realized they disappeared in the mid 70's and were never replaced. A shame it was never up-kept, as nowadays, such a thing would probably draw tourists to visit the underground and enjoy these!! A real gem, this system! I hope Montreal's new mayor Valerie Plante will implement the pink line.

+wheels Thanks for bringing us down memory lane with you. No cartoons these days but now there are TVs....lol. Tells us the news weather and how long for the next train. Not very artistic but definitely practical. I volunteered for Valerie Plante’s campaign with Projet Montréal. She is a breath of fresh air. Really down to earth. Our metro line may not be that pretty but it’s one of the perks of living in Montréal. You can live just about anywhere on the island and get to work in 30-45 mins. How many cities can say the same?

Wow! Just wow! For an event and tourism based city that has weather challenges this is absolutely strategic. It means four seasons of events that are impervious to the weather. The metro is weather proof, so once you're at Place des Arts you're in the centre of the event district, the concert hall, and the modern art museum. Being able to walk indoors to the Palais du Congres, the International Trade Centre, Place Bonaventure (the city's first and still massive convention centre), and the Bell Centre is unbelievable. The distances are vast, and the hotels, malls, metro stops and central train station along the path is bonus. The added leg that takes you back up to Place Ville Marie, and then up to all the malls on the St. Catherine metro line is like icing on the icing. There is no way to overstate the value of this feature for event planners and tourists alike. They can plan failsafe travel and events year round. And they do! Marvellously!

Agreed! If only it was pandemic proof...lol. In all seriousness, it is a great innovation. I think in some parts it could be made more accessible though. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.

Thanks, I love Montreal and I visited Montreal many times. But yesterday was my first time in Montreal during winter. Weather channel said it will be 39 F so I decided to go. The driving condition was a little scary for me. Too bad I chose to go to old Montreal and I found your video today. I found it was almost impossible to walk on the streets especially when they are sloped. I wished I could use your tips next time.

I love when people talk about things they know nothing about. Most of the underground city are PRIVATE buildings. The connections were for the most part built by several corporations who wanted to connect their buildings to the metro. There's almost no public money used in the building of the network. The only public sections are those directly interacting with the subway system.
@michelbeauregard7326

Michael Christopher Looking at 2009 numbers and the amount of money collected by the federal government (from personal income tax, corporate income tax and sales tax) by province: Ontario 85 billions, Québec 39 billions, Alberta 36 billions, BC 27 billions, Saskatchewan 7 billions, Manitoba 6 billions, NL 3.8, Nova Scotia 3.5, New Brunswick 3 billions, PEI 400 millions. . If you subtract equalization payments. Quebec net contribution is 31 billions and Manitoba is 4 billions. So in terms of net contribution to the federal coffers Alberta is second and Quebec is third. Now if you take all the expenditures of the Federal government by province, Alberta is the only one where the Feds don't spend as much as they collect. In every other provinces the Feds spend more than they collect, even in Ontario where the Feds spent 86 billions. Finally, of the 3.9 millions barrel of oil produced in Canada every day, 1.2 millions are sold to Canadians. Perhaps this is how Canadians compensate Alberta for being the only province not to receive more money from the Feds, by buying Alberta's Oil!
