In the '50s, high school dances in America were often referred to as "hops." Sometimes, these dances would be "sock hops" because school administrators would make the kids take off their shoes so they didn't scuff up the floor of the gymnasium, where the dance was usually held.

You guys have to watch American Graffiti now. It was George Lucas’ first movie, and not only does it have one of the greatest movie soundtracks, but it also shows what life was like for teenagers on a night in 1962. Trust me, you’ll love it.

You can get a lot of this type of music in the movie ‘American Graffiti’, a movie about small town cruising and early rock n roll that follows a group of teenagers over the course of one night… prom night, i think. A ‘70’s movie set in the ‘50’s.

Yes! You will just LOVE this movie! It was the very first movie written and directed by... George Lucas, who later wrote and directed something you might have heard of.... STAR WARS! lol.

The perfect movie to bring your music and movie channels together in one experience is American Graffiti. It's director George Lucas's (of Star Wars fame) first major movie, and although it's set in 1962, it captures the last waning days of what it felt like to be a teenager in the 1950s, and includes an incredible soundtrack filled with classic 1950s rock-and-roll.

I was just going to suggest this. It's one of my favorite. I have the movie on DVD and VHS and the records for the soundtrack. McKenzie Phillips (daughter of John Phillips from The Mama's and The Papa's), Kathleen Quinlan, Bo Hopkins, Joe Spano plus all the other stars. My favorite was always Wolfman Jack.

We were at a disco mid 70s when the dj played this. Two mates grabbed two girls and proceeded to throw the girls all over the floor. We were amazed, we had never seen them dance before! It was amazing!

Now you got all the seniors up and 💃💃🕺🕺 dancing. And the kids join in, LETS GO !!!! What a great oldie!!! Released in 1957, it reached Number 1 and was the highest selling single in 1958. Just a hoot. Sha Na Na gave it a revival in 1969 performing it at Woodstock and it was featured in the movie American Grafitti in 1973. Great reaction guys. Glad you loved it. Danny Rapp was 16 when they recorded this. The group was founded by David White, who was 18 when they recorded the song. David also wrote their other big hit. "Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay", and then wrote the super hit "You Don't Own Me" for Lesley Gore. He also wrote "!-2-3" for Len Barry.

In case you missed it, the first lyrics of this song is actually a list of dances that were popular back in the day. "Well, you can rock it you can roll it Do the stomp and even stroll it at the hop When the record starts spinnin' You calypso when you chicken at the hop Do the dance sensations that are sweepin' the nation at the hop.... fun to dance to. Amber... trust me... there is nothing like partner dancing and swinging around, fast or slow. I miss it a LOT.

I'm 52. My parents had this on a reel to reel. It was my favorite. Lenny who I don't think you can see here was the saxophonist, and later joined Sha Na Na. The group appeared at Woodstock thanks to their friend Jimi Hendrix (true story), appeared in Grease, and later had their own tv show.

@@AnitaLife27 I saw them at the KROQ concert at the LA Coliseum in 1973? 1972?. They have a big sense of humor. If I remember, they came out giving the crowd the finger. Very entertaining. I miss this kind of stuff. Today's music is dark,, brooding, depressing, nihilistic, etc.

Amber, you will LOVE the movie American Graffiti! It is set in 1962 California. At the Hop was in the movie along with so much great music from that era. Harrison Ford got his first role in this movie. It also has young Richard Dreyfuss, Suzanne Summers, Cindy Williams and Ron Howard. It was written and directed by George Lucas, made right before Star Wars.

I sang in a SW FL group called Brylcream that did all the oldies. We once had the opportunity to open for Danny and the Juniors. And this was their last song. They said, "We'd like to invite our new friends Berma-Shave to sing this next song with us!" (You'll have to look up the history of Berma Shave). We didn't care what they called us. I got to sing this song on stage with the original group. A memory I will NEVER forget.

Great stuff, thanks guys! My pop went to high school with Danny & The Juniors in Philly back in the 50s. The song was written by White, Medora, and Singer in 1957, when Danny & the Juniors were still called The Juvenairs. Initially called "Do the Bop", the song was heard by Dick Clark, who expressed concern that the dance fad of doing The Bop was on its way out, so he suggested they change the band name to the Juniors and the chorus from "Let's all do the Bop" to "Let's go to the Hop.”

This song was also featured in the 1973 classic American Graffiti where it was sung at a Hop by Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids. This film was made by George Lucas and was so successful the studios let him make a little "pet project" called Star Wars!

I love all decades of music. Thanks to my Dad, I was introduced to the music of the 50s and early 60s at a very young age and have loved it ever since. Danny and the Juniors and Dion and the Belmonts were two of his favorite. The hop refers to the “sock hops” at the high schools

This song was recreated in a live performance by Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids in the iconic George Lucas film AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973), as part of a scene of a high school sock hop where some of the story takes place early in the film. Doo Wop started with guys who had no money for instruments so they stood on street corners and created vocal parts to fill in for the missing instruments. When they did get record deals they kept those awesome vocal arrangements and added instruments. ☺✌💛 PJ

I love early rock and roll from the 50's and early 60's. One artist that I'd like to see you introduce to your channel is Neil Sedaka. He had many great hits that helped define that era with classics such as "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do", "Calendar Girl", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen", and "Oh Carol". He also made a comeback in the 70's with "Laughter In The Rain".

You have got to watch (American Graffiti) now. Several songs like this are in the movie. It was George Lucas's second movie, which he only made in order to make Star Wars. Also, American Graffiti is semi-autobiographical. This is the lifestyle George Lucas engaged in when he was a teenager. Try to figure out which one of the characters is George Lucas when you watch the movie.

A 60's group that most reactioners miss reviewing is The Association. Their hits include Cherish, Never My Love, Everything That Touches You, Windy,etc. The trick is to get the original versions, because they formed many reunions with different variations of the group.

love this!!! Yes they are referring to "sock hops" as said below. My sister would do these different dance moves at the school or community club dances. Another dance is 'The Stroll" with another hit song by The Diamonds. Can see some of these performed on "American Graffitti"

The piano is giving you the boogie woogie sound. Doo-Wop comes from the voices. The guys singing around the trash can in the movie Rocky are a great example of that. There are all kinds of old 50s groups like that you could check out like The Crewcuts, The Penguins, The Moonglows, The Diamonds, The Coasters, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Fleetwoods, and Joey Dee and the Starlighters to name but a few.

Lead singer Danny Rapp (1941-1983) was just 16 when this hit #1 on the Pop and R&B charts in 1957. An all-time classic upbeat doo-wop hit. (A hop is basically a teen dance at the school gym or wherever. Check out the classic film "American Graffiti," set in 1962, where they use this song at a hop.) The other group members were teens too. Their only other major hit was the similar-sounding "Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay" (#19 in 1958).

Danny and the Juniors had an iconic follow-up called Rock 'n' Roll is Here to Stay. On that record, it sounds like their arranger turned the music sheet upside down and played it backwards. He did something different. But both songs are anthems to the the fifties. The ginchiest!

You might also enjoy the Del-Vikings "Come Go With Me", "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" by Curtis Lee, "You Can't Sit Down" by the Dovells which are the most rockin' like this. "Earth Angel" by The Penguins, "Since I Don't Have You " by the Skyliners, "Get A Job" by the Silhouettes, " Book Of Love" by The Monotones, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers", "There's A Moon Out Tonight" by the Capris, "So In Love" by the Tymes are some of the huge ones. Doo Wop isn't about the piano but the harmony of the voices no matter the accompaniment and covers rockers like this and beautiful romantic ballads as well. Even a group like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are at their core a doo wop group with songs like "Sherry" .

Sock hops or record hops, as they were also called, were what dances were called back in the day. Usually someone spinning records and kids dancing to the music, or dancing to music played on the jukebox.

American Graffiti as a movie reaction suggestion is right up your alley considering the positive reception you're giving to these old 1950s malt shoppe songs! American Graffiti was made by the guy who made Star Wars, but he made it before he made Star Wars. This was a movie about a typical night as a teenager in 1962. The movie stars future filmmaker Ron Howard in the lead role. The movie has a wall-to-wall soundtrack of 1950s and early 1960s rock n' roll songs. There's also a lot of hot rod cars in the move. I think the both of you will get a kick out of it!

In the 80's when our girls were little, we would take them to the yearly Memorial Day "Sock Hop" in our hometown. I made them poodle skirts and found saddle shoes for them and tied scarfs around their ponytails. They had so much fun dancing to the "Oldies"! That was the best times!

Amber, you nailed it. Simpler times indeed - fun clean lyrics, no vulgar language or dance moves, just a simpler wholesome life. Many people are suggesting American Graffiti for one of your movie reactions and it is awesome. Another great movie choice would be The Buddy Holly Story which is historically pretty accurate and has awesome music from that era.

This was originally titled "Do The Bop", a dance craze at the time. It was changed to "At The Hop" because it was thought the craze was almost over and it would hurt sales of the song to be associated with the Bop.

I've said this before. You should do a deep dive into a group from the 70's called Sha Na Na. They were the group in the movie Grease that played during the dance, they sang the Hand Jive, blue moon, and whatever other songs played during that scene.. They started in the late 60's and even played at Woodstock. They are kind of a gimmick group, in that they pretend to be greasers from the 50's and all their songs are covers of 50's music. They became really popular in the 70's and had their own TV show. If you like the sound of the 50's, which I love, you will love Sha Na Na.

What's overlooked in this song are the drums and piano. Also I believe Danny was only 16 when he recorded this. Another hit by them was "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay". A kind of prophecy don't you think?

Go go Amber & Jay, you are getting the vibe of the school hops!! You have to watch the bands performing live to see the kids reacting & doing the dances that were popular !! 🎙️📻💃🕺. Television was pretty new in the 50’s so kids gathered around it to watch all the amazing things were out in the world, some shows like the variety/music shows were usually on once a week, individual music shows that were live would be on just around the time kids came home from school !! It was so exciting to hear all the music & be able to see the artists 🎉, it got better as time passed 🥰. Greetings from 🇨🇦🙃😻

This is one of my all time favorite songs. I have been enjoying this song since I was a kid back in the 60's. Another song by Danny and the Juniors is Rock and Roll Will Never Die. A couple of good cover versions of At The Hop are by Sha Na Na, at Woodstock is good but there are better versions by them, and Crash Cadillac and the Continental Kids from the movie American Graffiti. I believe that is their name. Speaking of AG, that's a movie you should watch. You will especially like the music and the cars.

Originally this song was called "Do The Bop" but Dick Clark suggested they change the title as Bop was street gang slang for a gang fight and jazz slang for sexual intercourse thus it became At The Hop. Motown came about 2 or 3 years later(1959-1960).

Initially called "Do the Bop", the song was heard by Dick Clark, who expressed concern that the dance fad of doing The Bop was on its way out, so he suggested they change the band name to the Juniors and the chorus from "Let's all do the Bop" to "Let's go to the Hop". After performing the song on Clark's show American Bandstand, it gained popularity and went to the top of the US charts, remaining at number one for five weeks. The song describes the scene at a record hop, particularly the dances being performed and the interaction with the disc jockey host. "At the Hop" was revived, performed at Woodstock by Sha-Na-Na in August 1969, and was included on the soundtrack album.

The Hop is what we'd call the Club. 4 part harmony with a lead singer emphasis on the vocals. The piano sets the tempo.

Before George Lucas did Stars Wars in 1977 he did a movie called American Graffiti and it features a fabulous 50's music like At The Hop . This music is before my time but I love it !!! You guys love Star Wars and you both got soooo excited listening to At The Hop so you might like American Graffiti on your movie channel. It's one of my all time favorites. Love you both ! You guys should check out American Graphitti, directed by George (Star Wars) Lucas. This was his 2nd feature film that he directed. Star Wars would be his next film. It takes place in 1962 which follows a group of High School Seniors on their last night before Graduation. SO many young famous faces in this movie! And the music...awesome! Hits from the mid-'50's to the early '60's.

Doo-Wop started out with The Mills Brothers in the 1930's. Four guys, one acoustic guitar and they used their voices to sound like the other instruments in a jazz band. (The Mills Brothers also made the very first "music videos" with animator Max Fleischer.) The style was adapted and refined by other vocal groups like The Ink Spots, The Impressions and The Flamingoes in the 40's and 50's. By the time Rock And Roll came around, urban kids were already singing acapella "Doo-Wop" versions of their favorite R&B songs on the street corners because they generally couldn't afford instruments. Doo-Wop was mainly popular in north-eastern cities like New York and Philadelphia....which is where the music industry was located at the time...which is why so many young Doo-Wop groups got recorded. On the west coast, The Beach Boys blended Doo-Wop with Chuck Berry and created Surf Music and the California Sound. Danny And The Juniors had another fun hit called "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay" that is basically...the same as 'At The Hop". Other great Doo-Wop groups to check out are Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers, Dion And The Belmonts, Little Anthony And The Imperials, The Del Vikings, The Coasters, The Marcels....

Other songs are «tunnel of love», «brothers in arms» and «Money for nothing»😁 Mark Knopfler really takes you on a journey with his amazing fingerstyle playing and unique voice! One of the Juniors was my neighbor. They would rehearse in his Mom's kitchen. I was in grade school. I would sit in my room with the window open enjoying their singing. It was a fun time to be alive in Philadelphia.

Such a time in music. Everything was so innocent, or so it appeared. It actually amazes me of sooooooooo much change regarding music, Rock and Roll, yet it still seemed so simple. I love this sound and the time. I think I was in a past life but I died in a car crash on "Deadmans Curve", a song by Jan and Dean. Oh and the ages of Danny and the Juniors was 14 and 15 years old!!!!!!!

I was a teenager at the time this came out. The words have more significance than you may know. The last line here (Do the dance sensation that is sweepin' the nation) clues you in. Dances (like waltz or tango but hipper) are being named. I did them. Well, you can rock it you can roll it / You can stomp and even stroll it at the hop / When the record starts spinnin' / You calypso when you chicken at the hop / Do the dance sensation that is sweepin' the nation at the hop

"Hop" = short for "sock hop," meaning: a dance. Slang terms, themselves, always "develop," so, likely, "hop" became a way of saying: 'a party" ...but generally, it meant a dance (like a High School or local youth ..."center" or other "town" "get-together" spot. ...whatever, like that (/in that vein).)

A classic! Yes, dances were popularly referred to as "sock hops" or "hops" for short. So Danny's just telling his girl they should go to the big dance. (As in "Grease", "Back to the Future" and so on.) From southwest Philadelphia, this was one of the early hits for Dick Clark's Swan Records, making Clark into the industry powerhouse he became. Sadly Danny Rapp committed suicide in his hotel room while on tour in 1983, but the rest of the group pushed on, with bass vocalist Joe Terranova taking the lead. They continued to tour, with Terranova and tenor David White both passing away in 2019. Second Tenor Frank Maffei continues to perform with his brother Bobby (who was brought in as an additional voice), which isn't bad when you consider that they turned 83 and 82 this year, respectively.

Love me some doo-wop. One of the first concerts I went to as a teenager was Sha-Na-Na. Great show and as a result I was a fan from the start. All the 50's craze during the 70's with the resurgence of American Graffitti and Happy Days etc was right up my alley. Some really good tunes from back then. Teenager in Love, Romeo And Juliet, Hot Sox, Little Darlin, Since I don't have you, Book of love...so many good tunes.

A hop was an informal dance usually held in the high school gym. Each class, freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior would hold a formal prom where you would have to wear a gown for the girls and a tuxedo for the boys, and dress shoes. But there were also hops where you wore more casual clothes and danced in stocking feet so they wouldn't have to wax the gym floor the next day.

I remember my junior high school in 1981 holding a sock hop as a throw back to that era. Many of our teachers were 35-45 years old so it surely reminded them of being a teenager in 1950s/1960s Canada.
